THE ADVENTURES OF PERIWINKLE & STINKY: PART CCCXLVIII

Adventure at the Cottage

Yesterday, Stinky sent a note to Periwinkle to meet him at their cottage, so he is waiting by the teleportation tunnel when he notices it begin to vibrate. Moments later Periwinkle comes tumbling out with the familiar whoosh right into his waiting paws. As they usually do, they spend several minutes whisker kissing and paw hugging.

When they finally come up for air, Periwinkle says, “I am so happy to be at our cozy little cottage, and you even decorated for Independence Day. It looks great!”

“I am happy you like it, Periwinkle. Before we head home, I will need to take all the decorations down and put them away.”

“I can help do that. But I am curious about why we are here?”

“I think it is the purrfect setting for today’s adventure. We are going to celebrate National Picnic Month with foods that have a special day today or are recognized for the entire month.”

“That sounds quite interesting, Stinky, and you know I love a good picnic. What will we be having?”

“It’s a surprise. You’ll find out when it is time to eat.”

“Phooey, you are such a tease,” says Periwinkle.

Tanabata

“Before our picnic, we are going to celebrate Tanabata.”

“What the heck is that? I’ve never heard of it?”

“Tanabata is a Japanese Festival celebrated on July 7th. It is also known as the Star Festival.”

“How do we celebrate?”

“On Tanabata, the Japanese people write short wishes, hopes, desires, dreams, poems or thoughts on colorful paper strips called tanzaku. The wishes can be for anything. The tradition of tanzaku originated in China and was later adopted in Japan during the Edo Period, which took place from 1603 to 1868.

“Traditionally the paper strips are tied to bamboo branches in public areas, like streets, parks, shopping malls, schools and shrines. The paper strips can be white, yellow, red, blue/green or purple. Each color represents one of the five elements in Chinese philosophy: wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. The Japanese replaced the original color of black, which was associated with water, with purple. B lack was considered unlucky in Japan.”

“Are we going to write wishes and hang them someplace?” asks Periwinkle.

Tanzaku

“Yes, I have already written mine and I have collected one from each of my fursibs. Your mom sent Reesie’s and Noelle’s to me. You just need to write yours. I made paper stars instead of just strips of paper, and I have hung all the wishes on our big tree along with star-shaped white lights. We just need to hang your wish after you write it,” Stinky tells Periwinkle.

Stinky gives Periwinkle a purple star. As she is writing her wish, he runs into the kitchen to make certain he has everything they need for their picnic. When he returns, she has her star ready and they go outside so Stinky can hang it up.

“Stinky, please be careful up there!”

“I will. I promise.”

“Are strangers meant to read other people’s wishes?” asks Periwinkle.

“The festival is not meant to be a private gathering. It is a public, light‑hearted tradition where people express personal wishes in a low‑pressure way. It is designed to be accessible and inclusive. Anyone can join without needing to know the customs. Participants normally don’t share anything they wouldn’t want someone else to read. The tradition is meant for people to entrust their hopes and dreams to the ‘celestial realm’ as both an emotional and spiritual act.”

“Are we going to share our wishes with our readers?”

“We certainly can, Periwinkle. They are printed on each of the stars that we hung, but even if our readers enlarge that photo, they won’t be able to read them.”

“I have an idea. Can we print another set and turn them into a patchwork, like a quilt?”

“That is a splendid idea. Let’s go inside and do that, and then we can have our picnic,” replies Stinky

Star Festival Wishes

A graphic with twelve stars contains tanzaku to celebrate Tanabata.

“Stinky, that turned out great, don’t you think?”

“Yes, I like it a lot. Of course, our tanzaku are unsigned, so readers will just have to guess which kitty wrote which note.”

“Some are pretty easy to guess, and others not so much,” replies Periwinkle.

“That’s true. Are you ready for our picnic. I set it up under the tree.”

“You bet, bring on the noms,” says Periwinkle, which makes Stinky giggle.

Picnic Time

“So, what goodies to we have for our picnic?” asks Periwinkle.

Stinky replies, “Deli sandwiches and salads, baked beans, blueberries, hot dogs, ice cream, watermelon, wheat and chocolate. I am not serving the horseradish that is included in this month’s list of foods. The wheat will be in the form of bread on our sandwiches. And I have hot fudge sundaes which include both ice cream and chocolate.” (Kitties should not eat chocolate, but as cartoon cats it is okay for Periwinkle and Stinky.)

“Wow, Stinky this really is a feast. You didn’t miss any of the foods you mentioned, and they all look and smell wonderful.”

Stinky has already started eating one of the hot dogs and just nods.

As they eat, Periwinkle thinks about her tanzuka and Stinky’s, which are basically the same. She decides to ask him about it. “I noticed we had similar wishes, Stinky. And, we have been engaged for quite a long time. Do you think we should start planning a wedding?”

“I like that idea. Let’s talk to our moms when we get home. I know they will have to plan it for a time that is convenient for both of them. Anytime is good for me!”

“Me too, but I know we have to talk to our moms,” says Periwinkle as she bends to give Stinky a whisker kiss.

When all the noms are finished, the tabbies clean up outside. As it is starting to get dark, they go inside the cottage and decide to head to bed and talk about ideas for a wedding.

The End

Periwinkle and Stinky will be participating in the Happy Tuesday blog hop hosted by Sandee at Comedy Plus. You can do the same by clicking on the Happy badge.

PLEASE, TURN THE BOOMERS DOWN!

Caturday Art

Calista Jo is here to wish everyone a happy and safe Independence Day on the semiquincentennial. She, however, is requesting that our neighbors and city try not to overwhelm Kitties Blue and all the other pets with the fireworks boomers.

To create today’s art, I selected a graphic of fireworks from piZap and overlaid it atop Calista Jo’s photo. Then I decreased the opacity by about 75 percent. The graphic in the upper right corner is also from piZap.

And here is a puzzle. It is actually quite easy to complete!

Sunday Selfies Tomorrow

Here we are with another holiday weekend, which Kitties Blue know will have many of you busy and possibly unable to join us on the hop. But you know how it works. You don’t even have to post tomorrow to join in the fun. The hop will be open for entries through Thursday.

I do know which of the gang will be here tomorrow, but I am going to let it be a surprise. I will say they took a darn cute selfie.

Thanks for joining us today.

KITTIES BLUE HONOR THEIR DAD

Sunday Selfies: Week #618

We love our dad bunches. He takes such good care of us. Dad buys our food and feeds us. He cleans our litter boxes and fountains. He also makes certain to feed the birds so that we have lots of entertainment. And he is terrific as cat furniture. As today is Father’s Day, we are here to honor and celebrate him.

The Cat on My Head's Kitties Blue honor their dad on Father's Day with a collage of usies that include them and their dad.

As it also is National Selfie Day, we decided to include Dad in our selfies. Though, Lisbeth loves attention from both Mom and Dad; she is not a lap cat. So, Lisbeth is alone in her selfie.

We know each of you with a human dad will be celebrating him today, and we wish all the dad’s (whether your children have two or four legs) an exceptional Father’s Day filled with lots of love.

We hope that if you are visiting today, you will join us on our blog hop. If you would like to include your dad in your selfie and make it an usie, as seven of us did, that would be terrific. Of course, that is not a requirement, as we know some of you have only a loving mom caring for you. If you are too busy celebrating today, you can join us here anytime through Thursday.

Whether you hop or not, thanks for joining us. Wishing everyone a happy first day of summer as well!

ELUSIVE CAT SELFIE

Sunday Selfies: Week #617

A elusive peach and cream colored cat with his tongue out and framed in an American flag graphic for Flag Day.

Look who is here today. Big surprise! Right? I actually had to help him with the selfie and snap it through two adjacent doorways. If I’d gotten any closer, he would have bolted. So, that is why this photo is fuzzy.

I did catch this elusive guy with his tongue out, which made for a fun photo. I added the American flag frame to celebrate Flag Day.

Please Hop

As Raleigh shows up so irregularly and is rather anti-social, he would really like it if you would join him on the hop this week. You do not need to post today to participate. You can join in anytime through Thursday.

I have a kitten on my chest and one lying between my legs. Both are sound asleep. It is making it difficult to type, so Raleigh and I will just wish you all an easy Sunday. Whether you hop or not, thanks for stopping by.

THE ADVENTURES OF PERIWINKLE & STINKY: PART CCCXLII

Commemorating Memorial Day

Stinky is extra excited for today’s adventure. He and Periwinkle will be commemorating Memorial Day, which was officially celebrated yesterday. He has selected a special place for them to visit, which is located only about 30 miles from Stinky’s home. When the teleportation tunnel begins to vibrate, he leaps in front of the opening and catches Periwinkle as she tumbles out with the usual whoosh. After several minutes of whisker kissing and paw hugging, Stinky leads Periwinkle back into the tunnel for a quick trip to their destination.

The National D-Day Memorial – Bedford, Virginia

From the D-Day Memorial web-site: D-Day veteran, John Robert “Bob” Slaughter and some like-minded veterans and supporters formed a committee in 1989 that would later become the National D-Day Memorial Foundation, with the goal of creating a lasting monument to D-Day somewhere in the United States.

Note: Periwinkle and Stinky will be showing mostly photos today, as the amount of information to share is overwhelming. Almost every vertical surface at the Memorial is covered with bronze plaques detailing participants and aspects of D-Day and World War II.  The link to The National D-Day Memorial site will be shared at the end of the adventure.

The National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, Virginia.

“Stinky, this is a beautiful locale and the purrfect spot to remember those who lost their lives fighting for our freedom during World War II.”

“Since, we have already visited Normandy and Omaha Beach, I thought this would be another interesting and appropriate locale for today’s adventure. This year is the silver (25 year) anniversary of the opening of the Memorial. D-Day occurred on June 6, 1944. Sources vary, but The V Corps History sets D-Day losses for members of the U.S. military at 2,374. The British Normandy Memorial records 22,540 individuals who died while taking part in D-Day and the Battle of Normandy, including British personnel and those serving in British units from over 30 countries.”

“This place is huge. Where shall we begin?” asks Periwinkle.

“You are right Periwinkle. The site is very large. The Memorial itself covers 50-plus acres and the surrounding grounds add another 38 acres.”

“Yikes, I am not sure my paws can manage that much walking.”

“Don’t worry about it, Periwinkle. We cannot possibly see it all today. We will visit as much as we are able and give our readers the highlights. As for where to start, I think we should start with the Bedford Boys, as they are the reason the D-Day Memorial is located here.”

The Bedford Boys

“Some communities suffered a disproportionately high number of casualties during D-Day. Thirty-four Virginia National Guard soldiers participated in D-Day from Company A, 116th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division, based in the town of Bedford before the war. Company A was nearly obliterated within hours of landing. Nineteen of the 34 men were killed during that first day. Four additional soldiers died during the remainder of the Normandy campaign, two of them from other 116th companies. This is the highest known per capita D-Day loss of U.S. soldiers,” Stinky tells Periwinkle.

“That is very sad, Stinky.”

Periwinkle, let’s head over to Estes Plaza next.”

Robey W. Estes Sr. Plaza

According to The National D-Day brochure, “Estes Plaza celebrates the success of the Normandy landing and the International effort that made it possible while recognizing the operation’s human toll.”

The arch at the center of the plaza rises 44 1/2 feet representing the occurrence of D-Day on the sixth day of the sixth month in 1944. “Overlord” is inscribed on the facade near the top of the arch. It is the official name of the operation, now simply referred to as D-Day. The alternating stripes at the top represent the stripes that made Allied aircraft identifiable.

Stinky informs Periwinkle that located in the center of the plaza beneath the arch is the official National D-Day Memorial Seal. It is printed in Latin. The English translation is “Remembering their valor, fidelity, and sacrifice.” Several other significant things are evident in Estes Plaza as well.

The tabbies cannot include everything here, so they decide to head over to Gray Plaza.

Gray Plaza

At the center of the Monument is Gray Plaza. The floor of the Plaza is divided into five sections representing the five D-Day landing beaches: Omaha, Gold, Juno, Utah and Sword. The centerpiece represents soldiers arriving on the beach with a “Higgins Boat” representing the various landing craft used to transport soldiers to the beach.

Stinky tells Periwinkle, “One of the things my mom’s dad did during the war was to pilot landing craft. He, however, did not serve in France.”

Periwinkle and Stinky discover the sculptures are entitled, Through the Surf, Death on Shore and Across the Beach.

An additional sculpture in Gray Plaza is entitled Scaling the Wall.

All of these statues represent troops in a variety of battle poses. They honor the valor, fidelity and sacrifice demonstrated during Operation Overlord.

Surrounding the plaza are two semi-circular walls. The one pictured below lists the names of the U.S. service members killed on D-Day. An identical wall lists the names of Allied Service Members. In total, the two walls contain 4,414 names of the members of the Allied Expeditionary Force killed on D-Day.

“Stinky, I am getting pretty tired. Do you think we could rest for a bit?”

“Excellent idea. There are some benches near the area we will visit next.”

“Thanks, Stinky. This is very nice and just what I needed. It is too bad snacks and picnicking are prohibited on the grounds.”

“There are designated areas for picnics, and we can pick up something at the Snack Bar before we head home,” replies Stinky.

“Excellent!”

The tabbies rest a while before heading on to Reynolds Garden.

Richard S. Reynolds Sr. Garden

The English-style garden represents the connection between the U.S. and England, where the planning and preparations for the Invasion of Normandy took place.

At the far end of the garden stands an English Folly with a statue of General Dwight D. Eisenhower, who was the Supreme Commander for Operation Overlord.

Stinky points out that the ceiling of the folly is a tile mosaic depicting a map of the plan for the upcoming invasion.

The Garden leading up to the folly is surrounded by busts of Eisenhower’s principal subordinates.

“Periwinkle, we have shared only a tiny bit of what is here, so I think we should stop at one additional spot.”

“As much as I have enjoyed this, I’m pooped,” replies Periwinkle. “Just one more stop sounds good.”

Stinky giggles but admits he feels exactly the same.

Gold Star Families Memorial Monument

The monument to Gold Star Families was added in 2017. It features a missing man (to the left of the tabbies), which represents the absence felt by survivors.

You can find out more information about the Gold Star monuments at the Woody Williams Foundation website by clicking the link.

“So, Periwinkle, what did you think?” asks Stinky

“This has been amazing. I think we could spend a week here and not see everything. I sure hope our readers enjoy this adventure.”

“Me too! Now let’s find some snacks.”

Periwinkle and Stinky head off to find some refreshments before heading back to Stinky’s house.

The End

Stinky and Periwinkle strongly suggest you visit The National D-Day Memorial website, especially the “Learn” section.

Note: The D-Day Memorial was and is not funded by the federal or Virginia state government and exists through and relies on donations to operate.

Periwinkle and Stinky will be participating in the Happy Tuesday blog hop at Comedy Plus. Should you like to do the same, click on the Happy badge.

MEMORIAL DAY AWWW & SPARK 2026

Awww Mondays

Being a holiday, one might expect that Kitties Blue are taking advantage of the opportunity to relax.

But, this is exactly what they do everyday!

Tali, Kizmet and Gibbs will be joining the Awww Mondays blog hop at Comedy Plus. If you would like to do the same, click on the Awww badge.

Sparks

My Spark today may not exactly represent Memorial Day, but I still found it appropriate for the current state of life in the USA.

An American flag wreath for Memorial Day with the following quote from Abraham Lincoln, "My dream is of a place and a time where America will once again be seen as the last best hope of earth."

History does seem fated to repeat itself. It may be in a slightly different manner, but I think we can all agree that the violence, racial profiling and anti-semitism currently plaguing our country as well as the war against Iran needs to end.

As we remember those who died for our freedom, I will be praying for peace in the United States and around the world.

Sparks is the creation of Annie from McGuffy’s Reader. It began as a blog hop, created by our friend. Annie stated when she began Sparks, “I believe we are meant to be lights in this world. If we allow our light to shine, we can see where we are going. It is then that we can begin to truly see each other clearly. Together, we can light up the entire world.”

Sunday Selfies: Week #612

Though, Calista Jo is your host today; all the Kitties Blue and I wish all those celebrating Mother’s Day, a most happy day filled with family, lots of love and joy.

Selfie of a dilute tortoise shell cat in a pink frame with flowers and bow celebrates Mother's Day 2026.

I am sorry for C.J.’s blurry selfie due to the sunlight behind her. And, of course, she did not look up! But that gives you the opportunity to see the freckle in her right eye.

Calista Jo invites you to hop along with her. If you would like to include your mom in your photo and make it an ussie, that would be terrific.  I am sorry I did to include myself in the photo with C.J.

Whether you hop or not, thank you for visiting today.

SLEEPY EASTER SELFIE

Sunday Selfies: Week #607

I apologize for the extreme blurriness of my selfie, but as Mom told you yesterday, I was awakened from, what I must say, was a very pleasant nap and asked to take a selfie. Mom tried to fancy it up a bit for Easter, but I don’t think she really saved it. Regardless, it is what we have for today.

A black and white yawning kitten in a sleepy selfie fancied up with an Easter design.

I bet each of you has taken a much better selfie, and the other Kitties Blue and I really look forward to seeing each one of them. We do realize, that as this is a holiday for many of you, your families might be too busy to get you to the hop today. But that is okie-dokie. I’ll be here through Thursday to greet you whenever you are able to join in the fun.

Purrs & paw-pats, Gibbs

Whether or not you are celebrating Easter today, we wish you a blessed day filled with love, joy, sunshine and lots of extra treats.

Thank you for visiting today, and thank you if you do join the hop.

P.S. Move your cursor around to see the latest, fun addition to our posts.

VALENTINE’S DAY ART 2026

Valentine’s Day Caturday Art

My art today includes nine of our angel cats. All but two, Chloe and Madison, were part of the Kitties Blue crew when I began the blog in 2012. There are seven other angels, Skooter, Steamer, Daphne, Thelma, Louise, Twinkle and MacKenzie, not included. They all have been greatly loved and are missed.

Nine angel cats in an artful collage with a heart and polka dot frame and an overlay of hearts for Valentine's Day.

Top row: Fiona, Misty May, Sawyer. Middle row: Mauricio, Astrid, Chloe. Bottom row: Giulietta, Lily Olivia, Madison.

To create the art (after putting the photos together), I added the Loving filter from piZap at 50 percent. The “Love You Forever” sticker is also from piZap and the frame from favpng.

Here’s this week’s jigsaw puzzle.

600th Sunday Selfies Tomorrow

It seems totally impossible, but tomorrow will be the 600th week for our Sunday Selfies blog hop. Kitties Blue and I know you do not want to miss participating in that! And, I cannot think of a better time to invite some friends to join you. I have not identified a host for tomorrow, so you will need to come by just to see which of the cats is here to greet you. Looking forward to seeing you.

Thanks for joining us today. Wishing everyone a Happy Valentine’s Day!

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2026

Thankful Thursday

I have one giant thankful for today: 2025 is behind us. It definitely hasn’t been the best of years. I am going to try to remain positive and optimistic that 2026 will be better for all of us.

As much as I have enjoyed the tiny terrorists, I am extremely thankful the four that are going up for adoption will be ending their time with us soon. Dad Tom and I are exhausted. All four are pictured below, but the black and white kitten is hidden by the other two at the top of the tree. She was our Sunday Selfie, so you can see her on that post.

Four kitten on a cat tree welcoming in the new year 2026.

Kitties Blue are thankful for all the Christmas cards they (and I) received from our blogging friends.

And, finally, we are thankful for each of you who visit, comment and participate in the Sunday Selfies blog hop.

We’ll be hopping along with the kitties at Brian’s Home in Angel Brian’s Thankful Thursday blog hop. If you would like to join us there, click on the badge below.

Thoroughly Poetic Thursday

I almost completed a poem for Angel Sammy and Teddy’s weekly poetry challenge at Two Spoiled Cats. However, with just a couple more lines to go, I discovered I was writing it for a photo from a couple of weeks ago. If that doesn’t give you a clue as to how tired I am, I’m not sure what will. So, here’s how this stands. I will try to finish the poem for the old photo and write one for this week’s photo and post them both tomorrow. I must point out that I said, “try.” There’s a pretty good chance I will finish the one I started, but as to a second poem … no guarantees.

We won’t be staying up to ring in the new year. Dad Tom never makes it that late, and I have a killer migraine. But I definitely will be happy to wake up to a new year. Hope you will be as well.

Poster from Kitties Blue to welcome in the new year 2026.
