THE ADVENTURES OF PERIWINKLE & STINKY: PART CCCLIV

Stinky is excited for Periwinkle’s arrival. He is positive she is going to love today’s adventure. While he waits by the teleportation tunnel, he spiffs up his furs. He always wants to look his best for her.

Stinky doesn’t have to wait long, as the teleportation tunnel begins to vibrate, and Periwinkle comes tumbling out with the usual whoosh.

After several minutes of whisker kissing and paw hugging, Periwinkle speaks. “I know today is Bad Poetry Day, so are we going to write some poems?”

Bad Poetry Day

“Nope, we won’t be writing any poetry, nor will we be climbing any trees.”

Periwinkle giggles at Stinky’s rhyming and says, “Okay, then I bet we are going to celebrate National Couples Day. Have you planned a romantic date for us?”

“I have no plans for romancing you, but I do promise to give you a whisker kiss or two,” replies Stinky.

“Oh, cripes, are you going to be doing this all day?”

“What are you talking about? Would you rather I scream and shout.”

Periwinkle rolls her eyes but decides not to encourage Stinky by saying anything else. Thankfully, he takes her paw and leads her back into the teleportation tunnel without uttering another word. Moments later they arrive at their destination.

Before Periwinkle can ask where they are, Stinky announces, “Welcome to Madurodam in the Netherlands.”

Madurodam

“Wow, this looks super interesting. Isn’t this one of the places Dalton and Benji’s mom, Ingrid, suggested we visit when you asked for suggestions back in June?”

“Periwinkle, you have an excellent memory. Let’s get our tickets and discover what there is to see.”

Periwinkle stomps her paws and replies, “Listen here, Stinky, I have had enough of this rhyming craziness. You are giving me a headache. Either spit out an entire poem and get it over with, or I am hopping back into the teleportation tunnel and heading home.”

“Ah, Periwinkle, this also is Never Give Up Day. If you wanted, you too could play.”

Periwinkle crosses her arms across her chest and just glares at Stinky.

Stinky suddenly looks crestfallen, but says nothing as he takes Periwinkle’s paw and leads her to the ticket line.

“Oh great, now you are going to pout. I am going to smack you if you don’t cut it out.”

Then it is Stinky’s turn to giggle. “Ha, I knew eventually that I’d get a rhyme out of you.”

Periwinkle slaps herself on the forehead and both tabbies break out in uproarious laughter causing the others in line to stare at them. In unison they clap their paws over their mouths in an attempt to stifle any additional boisterousness.

Finally, with tickets in hand, Periwinkle and Stinky set out to explore Madurodam.

History

Madurodam overview

Stinky puts his rhyming aside to tell Periwinkle a little about the history of Madurodam. “We are in a 1:25 scale miniature park and tourist attraction in the Scheveningen district of The Hague in the Netherlands. It includes replicas of famous Dutch landmarks, historical cities and large developments. The park opened in 1952 and resides on approximately 15 1/2 acres. All net proceeds go towards various charities in the Netherlands.”

“This is so cute, Stinky. I cannot wait to look around,” replies Periwinkle.

“I knew you would like it after I did my research. The park is named after George Maduro. He lived from 1916 to 1945 and was a Dutch law  student. Maduro fought the Nazi occupation forces as a lieutenant in the army and later as a member of the Dutch resistance. He died at the Dachau concentration camp in 1945.

“As a memorial to their son, George Maduro’s parents donated the funds needed to construct Madurodam. It was fashioned after Bekonscot, a miniature park in Beaconsfield, England. The theme for Madurodam is: The little city with the smile.”

Stinky continues, “After waning interest in the park, it was closed near the end of 2011 for six months and renovated. It reopened on April 21, 2012, to celebrate its 60th anniversary.”

Park Divisions and Intent

As the tabbies begin to walk around and explore, Stinky continues with his narrative. “The park is now divided into three themes. The first is water, as both a friend and an enemy. The second is historical cities and the third is the Netherlands as an inspiration for the world. Different activities are offered as part of each division. Also, both the aesthetic and informative aspects of the site have been improved. Triggered by chip cards given to visitors, small television stands show brief video footage or in-depth information about the site and its contents.”

The intent is for Madurodam to show a realistic view of The Netherlands in a scaled-down environment. Everything is modeled to scale. The small human figures included in the park show the real life of the Dutch people. These residents change with the weather, donning warm clothing in the winter and t-shirts in the summer. Over time, the residents of Madurodam have become more multicultural. Some now appear to have come from other countries, reflecting life as it is today in the Netherlands.”

“Stinky, this is so interesting, and I can always depend on you to research the sites we visit.”

Landmarks

Although Madurodam is mainly a miniature city, a collection of Dutch buildings, structures, and notable features also are included. Some of those are:

“Periwinkle, my paws are tiring; though, there is lots more to see, such as the skyline of the city of Rotterdam, the Erasmus bridge, Euromast, the central train station, cube houses and Unilever Headquarters buildings. Do you want to continue, or are you ready to return home?” asks Stinky.

A Poem from Periwinkle

Periwinkle replies,

“Stinky, I had an absolute blast;
though, this adventure went by super fast.
Maybe we can come here again
and share some other things with our friends.
I’m sorry your rhyming was driving me batty
and made me act rather bratty.
But now that I’ve made a little poem,
I believe it is time for us to head home.”

Stinky, throws his paws around Periwinkle and gives her a big hug and whispers, “I love you so much! I knew you wouldn’t be able to resist doing some rhyming of your own.” Stinky then takes Periwinkle’s paw and leads her to the teleportation tunnel for the trip back to Stinky’s house.”

The End

Note: With so many cool things to see at Madurodam, Periwinkle and Stinky could only share a small sample. Check out the site Small World Miniatures for more cool photos of Madurodam or just Google Madurodam images.

THE ADVENTURES OF PERIWINKLE & STINKY: PART CCCLII

Stinky waits patiently by the teleportation tunnel for Periwinkle’s arrival. He rechecks his fur to make certain he is looking his best. Moments later, the tunnel begins to vibrate, and Periwinkle pops out with the usual whoosh. She falls into Stinky’s arms, and they spend several minutes whisker kissing and paw hugging.

International Clouded Leopard Day

They come up for air, and before Periwinkle can ask, Stinky tells her his plan. “I just learned a couple of days ago that today is International Clouded Leopard Day. I did a search on line and found that several live in the United States, and six of those are in Virginia. Two (Jilian and Paintoon) reside at Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute in Washington D.C.

“Two other pairs (Tikka and Masala and Ariel and Ta Moon) reside at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Front Royal, Virginia.”

“Oh goody. Let’s go to one of those places,” replies Periwinkle.

Stinky sheepishly tells her that his mom REALLY wants to visit them as well, but since he just found out about this special day, she didn’t have time to make plans to go today.

“Stinky, that’s okay. We can go and tell her all about them, and she can go some other time.”

“Normally, we would do that, but as they are right here in Virginia, I would feel really awful if we went and she had to stay at home.”

“You know, Stinky, I will be really disappointed if we cannot go today, but that is one of the things I love about you … your thoughtfulness!”

Stinky blushes and replies, “Thanks for understanding. A future visit will give us something we can look forward to, plus my dad can come along and take lots and lots of photos.”

“Stinky, do you have any photos of a Clouded Leopard?”

“Yes, I have a few, thanks to AI. Here’s a photo of an adult.”

“Stinky, that is one of the most beautiful cats I have ever seen,” replies Periwinkle.

Facts About Clouded Leopards

“I have learned lots about these gorgeous cats, and I think we should share some of those facts,” Stinky tells Periwinkle. He continues, “I’ll include a list of web-sites at the conclusion of our adventure, in case our readers want to learn more.”

“That’s a good idea, Stinky. Where should we start?”

“Well, There are two types of Clouded Leopards, the Mainland (Neofelis nebulosa) and the Sunda (Neofelis diardi). We are going to be concentrating on the Mainland variety. Clouded Leopards are not related to true leopards (Panthera genus) but are a distinct genus (Neofelis).”

“If they are not related to leopards, why is that part of their name?” asks Periwinkle

“I don’t know why they received the name leopard. The clouded part of their name comes from their dark grey or ochre coat marked by dusky-grey and black blotchy and irregular spots and stripes. Their coat helps camouflage them in the trees. The first Clouded Leopard was described in 1821 on the basis of one example found in China and taken back to England.”

Habitat

“Periwinkle, I found various lists of places where these beautiful kitties can be found. They are native to South/Southeast Asia: Assam (eastern India), Bangladesh, Borneo, China, Nepal, Sumatra and Thailand. This list may not be entirely inclusive.

“It inhabits dense forests where it spends its days in the trees. The Clouded Leopard is primarily nocturnal; though, they can be active at dawn and dusk (crepuscular).

“Estimates suggest fewer than 10,000 Clouded Leopards (both Mainland and Sunda) currently remain in the wild. They are an endangered species in the “vulnerable” category. Their populations are threatened across their native ranges in Asia due to the shrinking of their habitats as a result of deforestation and fragmentation as well as poaching.”

“That is very sad, Stinky.”

Size/Anatomy

“Newborn cubs weigh in at five to ten ounces. Adult females weigh from 25 to 40 pounds and adult mails from 35 to 50 pounds.”

“Stinky, I cannot believe that the females are only a bit bigger than Cooper Murphy,” responds Periwinkle incredulously.

Stinky giggles and continues, “Due to their small size, Clouded Leopards are not considered one of the ‘big cats.’ Here’s how they stack up among some of those cats.”

Clouded Leopard: 25-50 pounds
African Leopard: 80-175 pounds
Snow Leopard: 60-120 pounds
Bobcat: 15-35 pound

“Their total body length ranges from two to three-and-a-half feet. The tail of a Clouded Leopard is the longest of any cat species in relation to its body size. Its length is from two-and-a-half to three feet long.”

“Stinky, that is amazing. Why do they have such long tails.”

“Its tail provides balance while it navigates and travels through tree branches. And, get this Periwinkle, it can climb down vertical tree trunks head first. And, its large paws and flexible ankle joints allow it to hang upside down from branches.”

“Cool,” exclaims Periwinkle!

“Besides being smaller in size, the Clouded Leopard has short limbs compared to other large cats. Its hind legs are longer than its front limbs to allow for increased jumping and leaping capabilities.

“Periwinkle, one of their unique features is huge jaws. In fact, the Clouded Leopard can open its mouth wider than any other feline. They also possess the longest upper canine teeth (1.6 inches) relative to their skull size. The Clouded Leopard is often referred to as a ‘modern-day sabre-tooth’.”

“Yikes, that sounds like they are really scary.”

“Maybe, but I did read that they are shy,” replies Stinky.

Vocalization

“According to some sources, the Clouded Leopard has the ability to purr due to a rigid hyoid bone. But other sources claim that the hyoid bone is not totally ossified, so they cannot purr. They are unable to roar like the big cats due to a different neck structure. They do growl, hiss, chuff and meow.”

“I hope when we do go to visit them, we get to hear them meow,” says Periwinkle.

Diet

“What do these kitties eat, Stinky?”

“They are carnivores, just like us. They eat birds, small rodents like squirrels, as well as gibbons, macaques, slow loris, wild boar and small deer.”

Reproduction & Lifespan

Stinky tells Periwinkle that the female Clouded Leopard gives birth once a year to a litter of one to five (usually three) cubs, about 93 to 99 days after becoming pregnant. Cubs are born with closed eyes. They open their eyes after about 10 days. After about three months of age, they are completely weaned. The cubs attain the adult coat pattern at around six months and become independent after around 10 months.

On average the Clouded Leopard lives 11 years in the wild but can live up to 12 to 15 years. In captivity, they may live up to 17 years.

In Conclusion

“I did learn more about the Clouded Leopards, Periwinkle, but I think I will save that for when we can actually visit them.”

“That sounds like a good idea, Stinky. My brain is already bursting with information. Should we list the sources you mentioned in case our readers want to learn more?”

“Yes, definitely. Here they are:”

Picnic & A Gift

Stinky takes Periwinkle’s paw and leads her outside where he has a picnic ready. When they get there, Stinky gives Periwinkle a gift of a Clouded Leopard stuffie. “I feel badly about not getting to see real Clouded Leopards today, so I wanted to give you a little something,” explains Stinky.

“Stinky, it is adorable. Thank you so much,” gushes Periwinkle. She throws her paws around his neck and gives him a huge whisker kiss.

After they finish their snacks, it is time for Periwinkle to head home. Stinky takes her paw again and leads her back to the teleportation tunnel. After several whisker kisses, paw hugs and whispered, “I love you,” Periwinkle enters the tunnel and with a wave and blown kiss is gone in a whoosh.

Stinky heads back into the house to talk to his mom about taking a trip to see the Clouded Leopards in the fur.

THE ADVENTURES OF PERIWINKLE & STINKY: PART CCCL

The Arrival of Periwinkle & Another Kitty

Stinky waits by the teleportation tunnel for Periwinkle. She is always punctual, so he knows he won’t have to wait long. Moments later, the teleportation tunnel begins to vibrate. Periwinkle tumbles out with the familiar whoosh. Before Stinky can set her upright, Noelle tumbles out behind her. Periwinkle is only slightly surprised to see her.

“Stinky, I was fairly certain I knew what you had planned for today, but now that I see Noelle, I know I am right.”

“Well, you are a really smart kitty, so I am not surprised you figured it out. We will be celebrating the anniversary of Angel Sawyer’s second Gotcha Day … the day that our Mom rescued him from his three-and-a-half week walkabout.”

“I am happy that you continue to remember that all important day when Sawyer came home. It truly was a miracle and a relief that he was unharmed,” states Noelle.

“Mom said we could do something today we have not done in the past.”

“Oh, I love a surprise, what is it?” asks Periwinkle.

Giveaway

“We are going to give away two copies of Purrseverance. The winners will be able to read Sawyer’s story as well as that of many of their other friends.”

“That is a super idea. What will readers need to do to win?”

“Just leave a comment on this post before midnight ET on Friday. Mom will use Random.org to select the winners.”

“I know this is a special day for another reason as well,“ says Periwinkle.

“That’s right, it is the fourteenth blogoversary of The Cat on My Head.”

Reminiscing

“It really is a strange coincidence that your mom brought Sawyer home on the anniversary of the blog,” replies Periwinkle.

“I know, and that is not the only unusual occurrence. The person who found Sawyer and snapped his photo lived in the house where Mom and Dad adopted their first kitty, Skooter. A friend of Mom’s lived there in the 80s.”

“He was obviously meant to come home. It is just too bad it took so long,” says Periwinkle.

“I know. That was extra time we all would have loved to have had with him. Mom thinks about him constantly and how much joy and sorrow he brought to our family.”

“So, what are we going to do today besides the give away?”

“That is a very good question?” As Sawyer’s birthday was just three weeks ago, Mom did a post for him then,” replies Stinky.

“Yes, but that was a party. She hasn’t shared photos since she let everyone know he went to the Rainbow Bridge,” interjects Noelle.

“She’s right, Stinky. We should find some photos your mom didn’t share back then, and make a couple more scrapbook pages for him.”

Scrapbooking

“Sure, we are really good at that. I will gather the supplies.”

After Stinky gathers what they need, the three cats get busy selecting some photos. “Lots of these, I don’t remember,” declares Stinky.

“He was such a cutie pie,” says Noelle with a tear in her eye.

“Indeed he was,” agrees Stinky and adds, “We all used to giggle at him when he looked like he was hopping like a bunny. Being a Manx cat, his back legs were longer than his front. Mom says, when she pictures him in her mind, most times that is how she sees him. She thinks his tailless butt was super cute.”

“I’ll agree with that,” says Noelle with a giggle.

“Noelle, I think you should be the first to share the page you made,” says Periwinkle.

“Thanks, I would like to go first. I miss Sawyer so very much.”

“That is so sweet, Noelle,” exclaims Periwinkle as she gives Noelle a hug. “Stinky, is it okay if I go next?”

“Of course.”

“That’s beautiful, Periwinkle,” Stinky says. “I guess it is my turn.”

“I am feeling very sad, now,” states Noelle.

“Oh, I think we all are,” Periwinkle tells her.

“I think I can cheer us all up. Cooper Murphy has baked some cakes—one in memory of Angel Sawyer and one to celebrate the blog’s 14th anniversary. We have beverages to share as well,” Stinky tells Periwinkle and Noelle.

A Celebration Cake and a Remembrance Cake

“As usual, Cooper Murphy has outdone himself,” Noelle exclaims.

“Let’s get all my fursibs together to celebrate the blogoversary and remember Sawyer. He was special, and I know we all wish he was still with us,” suggests Periwinkle.

Stinky goes in search of all the Kitties Blue and they join he, Noelle and Periwinkle for some cake, beverages and a group photo.

Finally, it is time for Noelle and Periwinkle to head home. Noelle thanks Stinky for including her in the remembrance for Angel Sawyer and the blogoversary celebration. She then heads into the teleportation tunnel for the trip home so Periwinkle and Stinky can spend some time together.

The two tabbies spend several minutes paw hugging, whisker kissing, and saying, “I love you,” to each other.  Then Periwinkle enters the teleportation tunnel and with a wave and blown kiss is gone in a whoosh.

Stinky heads to the kitchen to clean up their craft supplies and then finds a nice sunpuddle for a nap and dreams of Periwinkle.

The End

The tabbies, all the Kitties Blue and Noelle will be joining the Happy Tuesday blog hop hosted by Sandee at Comedy Plus. If you would like to do the same, click on the Happy badge.

THE ADVENTURES OF PERIWINKLE & STINKY: PART CCCXLVIII

Adventure at the Cottage

Yesterday, Stinky sent a note to Periwinkle to meet him at their cottage, so he is waiting by the teleportation tunnel when he notices it begin to vibrate. Moments later Periwinkle comes tumbling out with the familiar whoosh right into his waiting paws. As they usually do, they spend several minutes whisker kissing and paw hugging.

When they finally come up for air, Periwinkle says, “I am so happy to be at our cozy little cottage, and you even decorated for Independence Day. It looks great!”

“I am happy you like it, Periwinkle. Before we head home, I will need to take all the decorations down and put them away.”

“I can help do that. But I am curious about why we are here?”

“I think it is the purrfect setting for today’s adventure. We are going to celebrate National Picnic Month with foods that have a special day today or are recognized for the entire month.”

“That sounds quite interesting, Stinky, and you know I love a good picnic. What will we be having?”

“It’s a surprise. You’ll find out when it is time to eat.”

“Phooey, you are such a tease,” says Periwinkle.

Tanabata

“Before our picnic, we are going to celebrate Tanabata.”

“What the heck is that? I’ve never heard of it?”

“Tanabata is a Japanese Festival celebrated on July 7th. It is also known as the Star Festival.”

“How do we celebrate?”

“On Tanabata, the Japanese people write short wishes, hopes, desires, dreams, poems or thoughts on colorful paper strips called tanzaku. The wishes can be for anything. The tradition of tanzaku originated in China and was later adopted in Japan during the Edo Period, which took place from 1603 to 1868.

“Traditionally the paper strips are tied to bamboo branches in public areas, like streets, parks, shopping malls, schools and shrines. The paper strips can be white, yellow, red, blue/green or purple. Each color represents one of the five elements in Chinese philosophy: wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. The Japanese replaced the original color of black, which was associated with water, with purple. B lack was considered unlucky in Japan.”

“Are we going to write wishes and hang them someplace?” asks Periwinkle.

Tanzaku

“Yes, I have already written mine and I have collected one from each of my fursibs. Your mom sent Reesie’s and Noelle’s to me. You just need to write yours. I made paper stars instead of just strips of paper, and I have hung all the wishes on our big tree along with star-shaped white lights. We just need to hang your wish after you write it,” Stinky tells Periwinkle.

Stinky gives Periwinkle a purple star. As she is writing her wish, he runs into the kitchen to make certain he has everything they need for their picnic. When he returns, she has her star ready and they go outside so Stinky can hang it up.

“Stinky, please be careful up there!”

“I will. I promise.”

“Are strangers meant to read other people’s wishes?” asks Periwinkle.

“The festival is not meant to be a private gathering. It is a public, light‑hearted tradition where people express personal wishes in a low‑pressure way. It is designed to be accessible and inclusive. Anyone can join without needing to know the customs. Participants normally don’t share anything they wouldn’t want someone else to read. The tradition is meant for people to entrust their hopes and dreams to the ‘celestial realm’ as both an emotional and spiritual act.”

“Are we going to share our wishes with our readers?”

“We certainly can, Periwinkle. They are printed on each of the stars that we hung, but even if our readers enlarge that photo, they won’t be able to read them.”

“I have an idea. Can we print another set and turn them into a patchwork, like a quilt?”

“That is a splendid idea. Let’s go inside and do that, and then we can have our picnic,” replies Stinky

Star Festival Wishes

A graphic with twelve stars contains tanzaku to celebrate Tanabata.

“Stinky, that turned out great, don’t you think?”

“Yes, I like it a lot. Of course, our tanzaku are unsigned, so readers will just have to guess which kitty wrote which note.”

“Some are pretty easy to guess, and others not so much,” replies Periwinkle.

“That’s true. Are you ready for our picnic. I set it up under the tree.”

“You bet, bring on the noms,” says Periwinkle, which makes Stinky giggle.

Picnic Time

“So, what goodies to we have for our picnic?” asks Periwinkle.

Stinky replies, “Deli sandwiches and salads, baked beans, blueberries, hot dogs, ice cream, watermelon, wheat and chocolate. I am not serving the horseradish that is included in this month’s list of foods. The wheat will be in the form of bread on our sandwiches. And I have hot fudge sundaes which include both ice cream and chocolate.” (Kitties should not eat chocolate, but as cartoon cats it is okay for Periwinkle and Stinky.)

“Wow, Stinky this really is a feast. You didn’t miss any of the foods you mentioned, and they all look and smell wonderful.”

Stinky has already started eating one of the hot dogs and just nods.

As they eat, Periwinkle thinks about her tanzuka and Stinky’s, which are basically the same. She decides to ask him about it. “I noticed we had similar wishes, Stinky. And, we have been engaged for quite a long time. Do you think we should start planning a wedding?”

“I like that idea. Let’s talk to our moms when we get home. I know they will have to plan it for a time that is convenient for both of them. Anytime is good for me!”

“Me too, but I know we have to talk to our moms,” says Periwinkle as she bends to give Stinky a whisker kiss.

When all the noms are finished, the tabbies clean up outside. As it is starting to get dark, they go inside the cottage and decide to head to bed and talk about ideas for a wedding.

THE ADVENTURES OF PERIWINKLE & STINKY: PART CCCXLVI

Periwinkle’s Arrival

Stinky is waiting by the teleportation tunnel for Periwinkle when he sees it begin to vibrate. A moment later, Periwinkle tumbles out with the familiar whoosh. Stinky sets her upright, then gives her a big hug and several whisker kisses, which Periwinkle enthusiastically returns.

“I am so happy to see you Stinky. Your kisses are so sweet, but is there any of that cake or noms left over from Calista Jo’s birthday celebration yesterday?”

Stinky giggles in response to Periwinkle saying his kisses are sweet but replies, “I saved you a big piece of cake. I had to hide it, as all of my fursibs over-indulged. They are sprawled around the catio and house in food comas.”

It is Periwinkle’s turn to giggle when she hears that. She then asks Stinky what he has planned for the day?

“I decided to take one of the suggestions from our followers. Dalton and Benji’s mom, Ingrid, suggested we visit Grouse Mountain in Vancouver, British Columbia.”

“I have never heard of it. What can you tell me about Grouse Mountain?” asks Periwinkle.

“I have checked it out on line: Grouse Mountain’s name comes from the sooty grouse bird, which is native to the area. The mountain has been a recreational site since the early 1900s, with the first lodge built in the 1920s. Over the years, it has evolved into a major tourist attraction, with significant investments made to enhance its facilities and accessibility. It looks as if there are several activities. They have a hiking trail with 2,830 steps.”

“Yikes,” relplies Periwinkle. “What else?”

“There is an aerial tramway, a wildlife refuge and zip-lining.”

“Those sound like fun. Are you ready to get going?”

“Yep.” Stinky takes Periwinkle’s paw and leads her back into the teleportation tunnel.

Grouse Mountain

When they arrive at their destination, Stinky informs Periwinkle that in order to get to the wildlife refuge, they must take the Skyride up the mountain. So, they head to the tram station and hop aboard the first available one.

On the way up, the tabbies admire the view below them. Stinky tells Periwinkle that Grouse Mountain is part of the Coast Mountain Range in North Vancouver. He also tells her, “We will be traveling about one mile to the summit. There the altitude is approximately 5,250 feet above sea level. It will take us about six minutes to get there. On the way, we will travel through three different ecological zones: coastal rainforest, subalpine fir and open alpine meadow. We will have a 360 degree panoramic view of  Vancouver, the Pacific Ocean and the Coast Mountains. Be prepared for your ears to pop as we travel higher.”

The Grouse Mountain Refuge for Endangered Wildlife

The refuge is the home to two grizzly bears, Grinder and Coola, owls and hummingbirds.

Periwinkle & Stinky immediately seek out Coola and Grinder.

“Stinky, I cannot believe you convinced me to climb up here with you, but I will admit it is a better view from here,” says Periwinkle.

The tabbies find out that both bears were found orphaned in 2001. Coola was found on a highway near Bella Coola, British Columbia. Grinder was found in Invermere, B.C.

Coola’s mom and her two additional cubs were killed by a truck. Coola is a laid-back bear. Her favorite thing is to submerge herself in a large pond to play with her underwater toys: a log, large bone and a rock.

Grinder was discovered alone on a logging road. His mother was never found. He weighed less than 10 pounds and was weak and dehydrated. Of the two bears, he is the smallest but the most out-going and dominant.

Stinky tells Periwinkle, “We can breakfast here if you are hungry. Where you see those green umbrellas is the Grizzly Lookout Cafe.”

“I could eat and definitely watch the bears more,” replies Periwinkle.

The tabbies head to the cafe where they find a nice buffet available.

After a leisurely breakfast, Periwinkle & Stinky head out to the deck to watch Coola and Grinder a bit more. Once again, Stinky convinces Periwinkle to get up on the railing so they can get a better look at the bears.

After a short while, Periwinkle asks Stinky, “What’s next?”

Hiking & Zip-Lining

“I thought we would walk the 1.55 mile Grouse Grind trail, but as I mentioned earlier, there are 2,830 total stairs, and we cannot stop if we get tired and walk down from wherever we are. We have to go to the top at an elevation of over 3,500 feet, and from what I have read it is very daunting.

“I think I’ll pass on that. What else is there?”

“They also have zip-lining, but I know you don’t want to do that. They have dual lines, so we could do it side-by-side. Unfortunately, it takes two hours and the lines reach speeds of almost 50 mph.”

“Yikes. I’m sorry, but like you said, I don’t want to do that!” shrieks Periwinkle.

“I might be willing to, but I would never do it alone.”

“And I wouldn’t let you. That would scare me even more waiting for you for two hours.”

“So, will you be happy with just riding the Skyride, seeing the view, visiting the bears and having breakfast?” asks Stinky.

“You bet, seeing Grinder and Coola were enough for me.”

“So,  let’s get the next Skyride down the mountain and head back to our teleportation tunnel,” Stinky proposes and takes Periwinkle’s paw.

“Stinky, the views alone made this trip worth it,” Periwinkle tells Stinky on the way down the mountain.

“I totally agree!”

Heading Home

The tabbies jump into their teleportation tunnel and arrive home moments later. When they arrive, they head to the front porch for a snack and Periwinkle’s promised slice of C.J.’s birthday cake.

“Stinky, would it be okay if I check out the kittens prior to heading home?”

“Of course, let’s see if we can find them.”

“Periwinkle, just as I expected. Here they are on Mom’s lap.”

After a quick visit, it is time for Periwinkle to head home. She and Stinky walk to the teleportation tunnel paw-in-paw. They spend several minutes whisker kissing, paw hugging and whispering, “I love you,” to each other. Then Periwinkle enters the tunnel and with a wave and blown kiss is gone in a whoosh.

Stinky heads to the catio for a nap and dreams of Periwinkle.

THE ADVENTURES OF PERIWINKLE & STINKY: PART CCCXLIV

World Pet Memorial Day

Stinky is delighted when he sees the teleportation tunnel begin to vibrate, and Periwinkle comes tumbling out in a whoosh. One day a week together is never enough. He lets her know how excited he is by wrapping her in a big paw hug and showering her with oodles of whisker kisses. When he stops, Periwinkle says, “Wow, that was quite a greeting. I know I am happy to be here, and now I know how happy you are to see me.”

Stinky blushes and gives her paw a squeeze.

Periwinkle smiles and says, “I bet I know what we are doing today.”

“I am certain you do, as we have done it several times before,” Stinky replies.

“It is World Pet Memorial Day, and we are going to do something to remember our angels.”

Stinky claps and exclaims, “Right-oh, Miss Smarty Pants.”

Periwinkle giggles at his reply and then asks about his plan for the day.

“As Astrid and Sawyer went to the Rainbow Bridge since we did this last year, I thought we would concentrate on them,” Stinky replies.

“Good idea, what did you have in mind?”

“I know Mom made a special post for Astrid & we did one for Sawyer when they received their angel wings, so I thought we would share the links to those for anyone who may not have seen them or would like to look at them again.”

“I also think we should make a nice graphic to celebrate them today.”

“You know I enjoy an art project. Let’s get busy,” replies Periwinkle.

“Stinky, I think it is so cool that Astrid and Stinky’s photos are almost identical,” says Periwinkle.

“I know. Astrid used to sit and look up at Mom and Dad at meal time. She never made a sound or begged. Astrid just sat and waited with the hope of getting a tidbit from their food. And she usually did if they were eating something that wouldn’t hurt her. She taught Sawyer how to do it, and after she went to the Bridge, he sat in exactly the same spot waiting for a smidgen of something nommy. He, however, was not so quiet, and he would get up and dance around as well.”

“That is cool how he learned from Astrid.”

“It was, but he only had three months after Astrid got her wings before he joined her,” laments Stinky.

“I know. That totally sucked.”

Stinky takes Periwinkle’s paw, and both tabbies are quiet for a while as they remember Astrid and Sawyer and admire their work.

Visiting Astrid

“Periwinkle, I think we should visit Astrid. Mom got a gift for Mother’s Day that she has used for a marker.”

“Oh yes, let’s,” agrees Periwinkle.

“That is so cute. It looks as if Gibbs and Lisbeth and keeping Astrid safe,” remarks Periwinkle. She continues, “I know most of your fursibs are buried in your gardens, Stinky.”

“Yes, all the kitties, except Fiona, Lily Olivia and Sawyer are here, as well as Mom and Dad’s two woofies, Smack and Poppy. Mom and Dad have lived in this house for more than 40 years. They never had to leave anybody behind at another place.”

“Wow, that’s amazing? I bet it is comforting to know where all their furkids are. But, where are Lily Olivia, Fiona and Sawyer?” asks Periwinkle.”

“Come on, I’ll show you,” replies Stinky. He takes Periwinkle’s paw and leads her back into the house.

Visiting Three Angels

In the living room, Stinky shows Periwinkle the top of the piano.

“That is a beautiful display for so many angel kitties. And the angel figurines are really sweet. But, I see a couple that weren’t Kitties Blue.”

“Yes, Astrid’s husband Sampy is on the far right next to the drawing of her his mom Emily made. And the little photo in the middle is Lisbeth’s boyfriend Charles in his Cat Scout uniform.“

“How come all the Kitties Blue angels don’t have photos here?”

“There are just too many of them, so Mom has their photos in different rooms, like the bedroom and foyer and on various walls in collages.”

“That’s nice that she has photos throughout the house. She and your dad don’t have to go to one specific room to see and remember them.“

“That’s true, but even if they didn’t have photos and mementos and the blog, they could never forget any of the Kitties Blue.”

“I know that is true. It is the same with my mom. How can other pet parents remember their beloved fur family today?” Periwinkle asks.

“I found a good article at Wellness Pet. Those interested just need to click on the link. We are doing pretty much everything suggested in the article.”

Visiting Mau

“You know, we haven’t visited Mau in a while. Do you think we could do that?”

“Sure, let’s go back outside,” says Stinky and takes Periwinkle’s paw.

Stinky points out that the little tuxedo cat marks where Mau is buried.

Periwinkle asks if they can share a photo of the plaque that Lisbeth’s boyfriend Charles’ mom, Inge, sent to honor Mau and her sisfur Allie.

“That photo was taken in the spring. No flowers are blooming now, but the day lilies should be very soon. Mom used that photo as a Spark, as you can see,” Stinky explains.

“Stinky, that Spark is so purrfect!”

“Periwinkle are you ready for a snack?”

“I like that idea a lot.”

“Great, my mom set one up on the porch for us.”

Snacks on the Porch

“I totally agree, Periwinkle. It is just so sad and super difficult for our humans to say good-bye. Now, unfortunately I have to say, good-bye, to you until next week. I miss you so much while we are apart.”

“Stinky, I miss you too. I love you very much.”

“And, I love you.”

After exchanging paw hugs and whisker kisses, Stinky and Periwinkle walk to the teleportation tunnel. Periwinkle enters and with a blown kiss and a wave, she is gone in a whoosh.

THE ADVENTURES OF PERIWINKLE & STINKY: PART CCCXL

A Second Attempt

Graphic of two cartoon tab by cats, Periwinkle and Stinky. As Stinky waits by the teleportation tunnel for Periwinkle, he is quietly talking to himself. He is not happy, as he knows today’s adventure is not exciting. Not only is it mundane, but he and Periwinkle did the same thing in 2020. He has his paws crossed that Periwinkle won’t mind, as she always claims that as long as they are together whatever they do is fine. As Stinky carries on his inner monologue, he sees the teleportation tunnel begin to vibrate. He runs to the opening just in time to catch Periwinkle as she tumbles out with the familiar whoosh.

The two tabbies spend several minutes whisker kissing and paw hugging. Before Periwinkle has the opportunity to inquire about today’s itinerary, Stinky speaks, “I am afraid today’s adventure will not live up to any expectations you might have. It is a repeat of an adventure from six years ago.”

“Wow, six years was a pretty long time ago. Whatever we did then, I would think we could do again,” replies Periwinkle.

“I sure hope you will think that after I tell you what it is.”

“Well, spill it, and I will let you know.”

National Limerick Day

It is National Limerick Day, so I thought we would try writing a few again. I didn’t think there was any way to celebrate National Odometer Day, which it also is.”

“Ugh, I am not overly excited about the idea of creating more limericks, but the second option sounds totally boring,” Periwinkle says.

“Since it looks like we are doing this, would you like me to go first?” asks Stinky.

“Yep, go for it!”

A peagle (half poodle, half beagle) from a limerick by Periwinkle and Stinky. There once was a doggie named Mazie,
whose pedigree was particularly hazy.
She claimed she was half poodle, half beagle.
We guess that would make her a peagle,
but that would be definitely crazy.

“Stinky, that is totally lame,” exclaims Periwinkle

“Okay, let’s see if you can do better.”

There once was a feline named Stinky,
whose tail was particularly dinky.
The truth was he actually had none,
and his fursibs teased him for fun.
But, he didn’t care; he was loved by Periwinkie!

“Boo, hiss. That is a stinker!”

Periwinkle starts to giggle and almost cannot catch her breath. When she does, she tells Stinky, “If you can call a limerick about you a stinker, I can definitely change my name to Periwinkie. And, in fact, I think I like that. Besides, according to Mr. Google, ‘Limericks are characterized by their “nonsense-style” and humorous nature, often featuring made-up words or strange stories.'”

It was Stinky’s turn to just roll his eyes, to which Periwinkle replies “I think we did do lots better when we did this six years ago. I am going to give our readers the link to that post if it is okay.”

“That’s a terrific idea. I fear we are on a slippery slope and will only end up in a pit of poor puns.”

“Stinky, I love your alliteration, but even that won’t save us, so here is that link: “THE ADVENTURES OF PERIWINKLE & STINKY PART XXXI.”

“You know, Periwinkle, the first four lines are pretty easy. It’s the final one that is really difficult. But, I am going to try again,” says Stinky.

And orange tabby cat in a chef's hat with a pig in false eyelashes and wearing a pink pearl necklace and earrings.

There once was a great chef named Teddy.
With bacon recipes he was always ready,
until one day he met a super model sow.
He promised her he’d only eat cow
with hopes his new gal would go steady.

“Stinky, that actually isn’t too bad. The piggy is really cute with false eyelashes, lipstick, painted nails and jewelry. I sure hope Teddy won’t mind you pairing him off with her. I know he really likes his bacon.”

“It’s all in good fun. I think he will be okay with it.”

“So, I guess it is my turn again,” says Periwinkle.

A grey tabby cat holding a framed photo of another grey tabby cat. There once was a tabby cat named Noelle
who thought her boyfriend Sawyer was swell.
When he went to the Rainbow Bridge too young,
her heart was totally and forever stung,
as she never got to tell him farewell.

“Periwinkle, that is super sad. Limericks are supposed to be humorous.”

“Well, that is just too bad. I’m not a professional limerick writer. And, I know, Noelle is heartbroken.”

“I understand. We all miss Sawyer, and I am certain she’ll like the graphic we created. Shall I try one more.”

” Yeah, go for it.”

There once was a kitten named Tali
who with her fursibs was left in an alley.
Though, none were particularly sickly;
they all might have died quickly.
Instead, they each got a new family.

“That wasn’t too bad. I don’t think we mastered the humorous aspect of any of these, except maybe the one about Teddy. We definitely should pass on doing this again.”

“I totally agree.,” Stinky replies. He continues, “I think we should tell our readers a bit about how this celebration came into existence. We did not do that before.”

“Good idea,” agrees Periwinkle. “I know you will have researched the topic thoroughly.”

Some History

Actually, there isn’t too much to tell. National Limerick Day, celebrated on May 12, honors Edward Lear, born on that day in 1812. Lear was an English poet, writer, illustrator and artist. Though, he didn’t invent the limerick; Lear is credited with making it popular. He is best known for the 1846 publication, The Book of Nonsense, which contained hundreds of his silly, five-line verses.

It is not clear who started the celebration, but it has been going  on since 1984. If our readers would like to learn more, a good site to check out is King of Limericks.”

Snack Time

“Stinky, I think I could use a snack. How about you?”

“Definitely. We cannot have a picnic in the periwinkles as it rained a major part of yesterday. If we sit there, our furs will get wet. Also, the porch is off limits. A robin has made her nest there, and might dive bomb us if we get too close. If we go to the catio, all my fursibs will be all over our noms. So, I guess we are in the kitchen today.”

“Well, this isn’t too bad, Periwinkle. We only have to share with three of my sisfurs. If Tali was here, we would be in big trouble. She has already become a treat monster.”

Periwinkle giggles and helps herself to some  Temptations. “Stinky, I don’t mind sharing, and I always enjoy visiting with your sisfurs. I would even be okay if Tali was here.”

Periwinkle, Stinky and his sisfurs all fall quiet as they enjoy their snack.

When finished, it is time for Periwinkle to head home. Stinky promises to come up with a better adventure the next time it is his turn to set the itinerary. Periwinkle tells him it would be fun to go somewhere as they head to the teleportation tunnel. After several whispered, “I love yous,” whisker kisses and paw hugs, Periwinkle enters the teleportation tunnel and departs in a whoosh.

As he always does, Stinky seeks out a sunpuddle for a nap and dreams of Periwinkle.

THE ADVENTURES OF PERIWINKLE & STINKY: PART CCCXXXVIII

A Florida Adventure

Stinky gets up especially early on Tuesday morning and packs a few items for Periwinkle and his adventure. Periwinkle will not be teleporting to Stinky’s house, but instead he is going to her house, as the adventure he has planned is in Florida. That is the only thing he has told Periwinkle about it.

When Stinky arrives at Periwinkle’s house, she is waiting by the teleportation tunnel and grabs him in a big hug as he tumbles out with the usual whoosh. She notices he has a tote bag with him and is curious and anxious to see inside. She tries to take it from Stinky, but he holds on tightly and requests a few whisker kisses before he reveals its contents. That suits Periwinkle just fine. When they come up for air, he hands the tote to Periwinkle.

Periwinkle pulls out the items inside and gives Stinky a quizzical look. “Costumes? It isn’t Halloween. Why do we have costumes?” she asks.

“We are going undercover for our adventure,” says Stinky with a laugh!

“No, seriously Stinky, what are we doing? I recognize a Superman costume, but what the heck is this other one?”

“That is the Scarlet Witch,” Stinky replies.

Periwinkle just gives him a vacant look.

“Like Superman, the Scarlet Witch is one of the Marvel Comic super heroes.”

“Then, why have I never heard of her?”

“Ahh, that would be because she has never been in any of the Marvel movies, just the comic books.”

Periwinkle is still totally confused and just stares at Stinky.

Finally, Stinky decides to explain. “We are going to visit Marvel Super Hero Island at Universal Orlando’s Islands of Adventure, as today is National Superhero Day. I thought it would be fun to attend as super heroes. So let’s get into our costumes and then I will tell you why I selected the Scarlet Witch for you.”

The Scarlet Witch

A cartoon tabby cat dressed as Marvel's Scarlet Witch.

When Periwinkle reappears, Stinky is taken aback by how regal and sophisticated she looks. When he regains his composure, he tells Periwinkle he selected this character, as the Scarlet Witch is a sorceress capable of manipulating and reshaping reality on a huge scale and wielding chaos magic. She also possesses paranormal abilities, including telekinesis, energy manipulation and spellcasting. She is one of the most powerful and influential characters in the Marvel Universe.

“Wow, Stinky, I like this character. You and I basically are reshaping reality whenever we go on an adventure. But tell me why you selected Superman and not Spiderman, which you portrayed last Halloween.”

Superman

Stinky replies, ”For starters, that Spiderman costume was lame with the silly cap. Additionally, Superman is able to leap tall buildings in a single bound. That’s a great attribute for a cat who likes to climb on tall things.” Periwinkle rolls her eyes and stifles a laugh at Stinky’s reason for selecting Superman.

Stinky ignores her and continues, “Of course, I like that he possesses superhuman strength, speed, flight, invulnerability, heat and x-ray vision, extraordinary hearing and longevity. Though, his amazing abilities make him nearly god-like; he has a moral compass and commitment to justice, which defines him as a hero. So, now that you have some info about our characters, should we head out for today’s adventure?”

“Definitely,” replies Periwinkle. The tabbies head to the teleportation tunnel paw-in-paw.

Periwinkle and Stinky arrive at the gateway to the Marvel Super Hero Island and actually marvel at the size of the characters on display. It doesn’t take them long after that to meet up with some of the Marvel super heroes.

Captain America invites them to take a photo, and Wolverine compliments them on how authentic they look. Spiderman asks them, “Why are you two cool cats dressed in super hero costumes?”

Stinky explains that they are celebrating National Super Hero Day. All the super heroes take turns shaking Periwinkle and Stinky’s paws and welcoming them on such a special day.

The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man®

Stinky and Periwinkle decide to make the Spiderman Adventure their first stop.

When they exit the Spiderman Adventure, Periwinkle exclaims “That was really fun! What’s next?”

“Let’s go on the rollercoaster,” Stinky replies.

The Incredible Hulk Coaster®

When Periwinkle sees the rollercoaster, she is not too sure she wants to ride it. “Stinky, I’m afraid I might hork if we do this,” she says.

“No way, you’ll be fine. Remember, you are a super hero today.”

“Okay, but what can you tell me about this thing before I agree?”

“I did look up the specifications before we came. The track length is 3,670 feet, and its tallest point is 110 feet. It launches and accelerates to 40 mph in the first two seconds and reaches a maximum speed of 67 mph. There are seven inversions including a zero-gravity roll, a cobra roll. two vertical loops and two corkscrews. The first drop is 105 feet.”

“Yikes, I really don’t think I want to do this!”

“Trust me, you can do this. The ride will be over before you know it. It only lasts a little over two minutes,” replies Stinky. He then takes Periwinkle’s paw and leads her into one of the cars.

At the first drop, Periwinkle is screaming and crying at the same time.

When the tabbies disembark from the Hulk Coaster, they are both dizzy and weave as they try to walk. Periwinkle finds a bench where they can rest. When she finally catches her breath, she tells Stinky, “That was the scariest thing I have ever done, and I did not have fun!” Periwinkle notices Stinky giggling and punches him on the arm. She says, “You are a sadist, Stinky,” and walks off in a huff. Stinky has to run to catch up.

When Stinky catches up to Periwinkle he puts his arm around her and tells her they can do something more calm. He leads her to the Storm Force Accelatron.

Storm Force Accelatron®

When they reach the Accelatron and get in Professor Xavier’s generator, Stinky tells Periwinkle they need to spin the generator’s wheel super fast. This will help the character Storm build up enough thunder and lighting to blast the evil Magneto character into oblivion and save the planet.

Periwinkle doesn’t understand any of that, and tells Stinky that all the other riders can do the spinning, as he told her this ride would be calm. As the other riders spin their generators faster and faster, Periwinkle keeps her paws on the wheel so Stinky cannot compete with them. She is happy when the ride concludes and she can once again put her paws on solid ground.

“We just have one more ride before we can have dinner,” Stinky tells Periwinkle.

“The chance of me keeping any food in my tummy after this is highly unlikely,” Periwinkle replies between clenched teeth. Again, Stinky giggles, which Periwinkle is beginning to find totally aggravating.

Doctor Doom’s Fearfall

As they approach Doctor Doom’s Fearfall, Periwinkle informs Stinky, “I will not be getting on that thing. If you want to do it, you can go alone.”

“Ahh, come on, Periwinkle. It is only a 199-foot drop,” Stinky replies.

“Read my lips, buster: NO,” shouts Periwinkle.

“With Periwinkle’s refusal, Stinky decides to climb up on a nearby tower.”

Having averted Stinky’s attempt to get her on this final ride, Periwinkle simply stands nearby and waits for Stinky to come down. When he finally does, he takes her paw and leads her to Cafe 4 where he has scheduled a Character Dinner.

Having worked up an appetite from walking, Periwinkle and Stinky fill up their trays with lots of goodies and enjoy a leisurely meal. Periwinkle is happy her tummy has settled and what goes down does not come up again. When finished, they decide to take one final photo before heading back to Periwinkle’s house.

After the photo, the tabbies enter their teleportation tunnel and are back at Periwinkle’s house moments later. They shed their costumes, and Stinky spends a bit of time visiting with Mom Sharon and Periwinkle’s fursibs. Then it is time for him to head home. He and Periwinkle spend several minutes paw hugging and whisker kissing. And Stinky apologizes to Periwinkle for forcing her to do some things she didn’t enjoy. She gives Stinky an extra hug, and tells him, “I totally enjoyed myself; though, I was frightened at times. You kept me safe and didn’t make me go on that Doctor Doom ride, and that’s what counts.”

Stinky is relieved and happy Periwinkle is not mad at him. He gives her another kiss before entering the teleportation tunnel. Then with a final wave, he is gone in a whoosh.

THE ADVENTURES OF PERIWINKLE & STINKY: PART CCCXXXVI

Stinky is delighted when he sees the teleportation tunnel begin to vibrate. It means Periwinkle will be arriving momentarily. He never likes to miss a minute of time together on their weekly adventures. He stands at the exit of the tunnel with his paws outstretched and catches her as she tumbles out with the usual whoosh. They both giggle and spend several minutes whisker kissing and paw hugging.

When they come up for air, Periwinkle asks, “What’s the plan for today, Stinky.”

National Gardening Day

“I hope you won’t be disappointed. Today is National Gardening Day, so we are going to stay here and help my mom plant a few perennials she bought recently. It is still too early for annuals, and those are not even available yet at the garden center. She has been working really hard in the yard for the past month, and I thought it would be nice if we lent her our paws.”

“I love spending time outside and am always happy to help your mom,” replies Periwinkle. “What are we going to plant?”

“She has bee balm, Lavender and some catmint. When we finish, if we are not too tired, we can nave a picnic in the periwinkle.”

“I am never too tired for a picnic!”

They find Stinky’s mom in the backyard with the plants, pots and soil. When she sees Periwinkle, she scoops her up in her arms and gives her a big hug, which makes Periwinkle purr.

Lavender

Stinky asks his mom where they should begin. She says that they are going to plant the lavender first, and she shows the tabbies the pot they will use. Mom Janet explains that she bought the pot in the early 70s. She and Dad Tom lived in Kansas City, Missouri, then, and they took a trip to Eureka Springs, Arkansas. That’s where she purchased it.

Stinky says, ”I cannot believe that pot is over 50 years old. It still looks pretty good.”

“It’s not as colorful as it once was, but it brings back nice memories every year,” his mom explains.

Two cartoon tabby cats, one in a frog hat and one in a butterfly hat in front of peonies plants and a tall green ceramic cat and next to a potted Lavender plant.

Once the plant is in the pot, Stinky’s mom says, “I usually plant lobelia in this pot, as the blue color on the pot is complementary to the blue flower. Unfortunately, the wildlife have eaten all the flowers off of it the past couple of years.”

“The lavender smells really nice, and I like the tall ceramic cat. Maybe he’ll guard the lavender and scare off any flower-eating critters,” Periwinkle says with a giggle. She adds,”This will look really pretty when the lavender and these peonies are both blooming.”

Stinky’s mom agrees and tells her that the peonies usually bloom around Mother’s Day.

Bee Balm

Mom Janet then gets the bee balm. “We are going to plant it in this big clay pot. The hummingbirds really like bee balm, so I may move it to the flower box beneath the bedroom window before the hummers arrive or just buy more for there.”

Periwinkle and Stinky get busy digging two holes for the plants. When they finish and the plants are firmly tamped down, Mom Janet adds a cat with a lantern to the pot. “That is so cute,” exclaims Periwinkle. ”Does the lantern light up?” she asks.

Two cartoon tabby cats, one in a frog hat and one in a butterfly hat next to a pot with two bee balm plants and a cat statue holding a tiny lantern.

“It is solar and should light up tonight after being outside today. Though, it has been mostly cloudy today, so we’ll just have to see what happens when it gets dark. It was a gift from Mom Pam and Teddy (Two Spoiled Cats) at Christmas.”

“That was definitely a special gift,” says Periwinkle.

Catmint

The last plant they have to pot is some catmint.

“What is the difference between catmint and catnip?” Asks Periwinkle.

Stinky replies, “I looked that up on the internet. They are related perennials from the mint family, but catmint is an ornamental garden plant with small lavender-blue or pink flowers. There are 27 varieties of catmint. Some of the names are Cat’s Pajamas, Cat’s Meow, Kitten Around, Pink Panther and Pink Cat. I think that is so funny, since we cats want catnip not catmint.”

Periwinkle asks Mom Janet, “What is this variety?”

“It is called Little Titch. Maybe later in the spring one of those varieties Stinky mentioned will be available. And, Periwinkle, catmint attracts butterflies.”

“That’s cool since I have butterflies on my hat!”

Stinky continues, “Of course, it is catnip that is for kitties. It has larger leaves and white flowers and a very high concentration of nepetalactone. That’s the compound that can make us cats act crazy. I sure hope Mom is going to plant some for us again this year.”

“Don’t worry, Stinky. As soon as some is available at one of the places your dad and I buy plants, we will get some for you and all the Kitties Blue,” says Mom Janet.

Yard Cats

“Stinky, your yard definitely has lots of cat items. Maybe that’s why the bad person thought it would be okay to leave all the cats and kittens here.”

Mom Janet replies to her comment, “If that was what the cruel and irresponsible person was thinking, they better not try it again.”

Periwinkle ducks her head and is sorry she mentioned anything about the “dumped” kitties.

“We can check out some of the other cats, Periwinkle, if you like,” says Stinky.

“Yes please. What about the one with the butterfly?”

“This is where Astrid is buried. Mom wanted to plant tulips here like she did on Giullietta’s grave, but with the kittens and her knee surgery, she didn’t get it done in the fall. She will try to do it this coming fall.”

“That will really make it special,” replies Periwinkle.

Stinky tells her that the graves for Madison, MacKenzie and Misty May are in another section of the same flower bed.

Periwinkle sees a cat flag and runs over to it. “Stinky, will you take my photo here? I think this is super funny, as you don’t even have a dog.”

“Periwinkle, these are just a few of the cat statues and signs in the yard. Maybe on another adventure, I can show you the others.”

“That would be great, Stinky.”

Picnic Time

“So, are you ready for our pincic?”

“I could eat,” replies Periwinkle with a giggle.

Stinky’s mom has set up their picnic in their usual spot among the periwinkles, and the tabbies head there.

“Stinky, I am always delighted when I think I was named after these beautiful flowers.”

“They aren’t nearly as beautiful as you,” Stinky tells her.

Periwinkle blushes and gives Stinky a paw hug. The tabbies eat their lunch. When finished, they lie down on their blanket for a nap. After their nap, it is time for Periwinkle to head home. But, she asks if she can visit the kittens before she leaves, so she and Stinky head to the catio, where they find Gibbs and Tali hanging out at the top of the cat tree. Periwinkle climbs up onto the railing so she can give them each a kiss.

Periwinkle also says,”hi,” to all the other Kitties Blue, and then she and Stinky head to the teleportation tunnel. After several minutes of whisker kissing and paw hugging, Periwinkle enters the teleportation tunnel and with a wave, blown kiss and a whoosh, she is on her way home.

Stinky returns to the catio to hang out with his fursibs.

THE ADVENTURES OF PERIWINKLE & STINKY: PART CCCXXXIV

Stinky decided he and Periwinkle should start today’s adventure as early as possible, so he and Periwinkle slept at their cottage Monday night.

They arise early, have a good breakfast and hop into their teleportation tunnel. Stinky does not tell Periwinkle where they are going, but as soon as they pop out of the tunnel with the usual whoosh, she recognizes their destination. But, before she can speak, Stinky hands her something he has brought with them.

“Oh, Stinky, Paris in the spring. What a wonderful idea. And a pink beret for me to wear … I love it,” exclaims Periwinkle!

Eiffel Tower Day

“I thought you might like that,” replies Stinky. “Today is Eiffel Tower Day. It commemorates the inaugural anniversary of the Tower, which was unveiled on March 31, 1889. So, we are going to visit it today.”

Periwinkle claps her paws together and gives Stinky a whisker kiss. “OMG, Stinky! I never expected this to be our adventure.”

Stinky takes her paw and leads her to the line where an enormous number of people are waiting. When the other visitors see the famous adventurers, Periwinkle and Stinky, everyone starts urging them to the front of the line. Arriving at the ticket window, the tabbies learn someone in line already paid for their tickets. Not knowing who it was, Periwinkle and Stinky turn and wave and shout, “thank you,” to the crowd.

As they start up the 327 steps to the first observation platform, Stinky tells Periwinkle, “The Eiffel Tower is 1,083 feet tall and was the World’s tallest structure at 984 feet for 41 years, until 1930 when the Chrysler Building in New York took over that record at 1,046 feet and 3 inches. With the addition of a new antenna in 1957, the Eiffel Tower surpassed the Chrysler building. The Burj Khalifa in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, is the current tallest building in the world. Standing at 2,717 feet, it has held this record since 2010.”

Stinky continues “Gustav Eiffel designed the Tower as part of a competition with more than 100 entries. It was to be built to celebrate the 100th year anniversary of the French Revolution and as an exhibit for the Exposition Universelle (World’s Fair).

“Eiffel’s design was selected as the winner. Construction of the project began on January 28, 1887. It took only two years, two months and five days to complete. That was super fast for the 19th century. It took 300 workers, 18,000-plus pieces of iron and 2.5 million rivets to construct this famous landmark.“

“That was truly an amazing feat,” remarks Periwinkle.

The First Observation Deck

The tabbies stop at the first observation deck which is at 187 feet.

“Stinky, You always impress me by how many facts you gather about the places we visit. Please tell me more.” exclaims Periwinkle.

Stinky blushes but continues, “The Tower was only supposed to stand for 20 years.”

“That’s crazy! After all that work, I cannot even imagine such a thing.”

“It’s true. It was to be destroyed in 1909 and sold for parts. But, in an attempt to save it, Eiffel began working with the military and experimenting using the tower as an antenna. Adding an extra nine feet, nine inches of height allowed for the installation of the Tower’s first radio antenna, which gained the Tower permanent status as Paris’s iconic landmark.”

“That was very smart of Mr. Eiffel. I cannot imagine Paris without this beautiful structure,” Periwinkle tells Stinky.

The Grand Palais

From the first observation deck, the tabbies see the Grand Palais. It too was constructed for the 1900 Exposition Universelle (World’s Fair), with construction begun in 1987. Its grand opening was on May 1, 1900.

“That is really a beautiful structure,” exclaims Periwinkle.

The Second Observation Deck

Next the tabbies climb the 347 steps to the second observation deck. From there, they check out the Palais de Chaillot and the Jardins du Trocadéro.

Stinky informs Periwinkle that the hill of Chaillot was first arranged for the 1867 World’s Fair. For the 1878 World’s Fair, the Palais du Trocadéro was constructed. It stood until it was partially demolished in 1937 and the Palais de Chaillot was built

“That is really beautiful, Stinky. Maybe we can visit it if we come back to Paris again,” says Periwinkle. Stinky nods his head in agreement.

After viewing some other areas of Paris from the second level, the tabbies proceed to one of the three elevators to go to the top of the tower. Though, the Tower has steps all the way to the top (a total of 1665 from the ground); it is too dangerous for visitors to climb the ones from the second platform to the top.

A View from the Top

Periwinkle cannot believe it, but immediately upon exiting the elevator Stinky runs to and climbs the exterior railing.

Stinky sees Periwinkle roll her eyes at him. In response he says, “That posted sign doesn’t say anything about not climbing the railing.”

“Probably, because they know no human would be that careless!”

“Wow, this is an amazing view,” exclaims Periwinkle. Stinky agrees, and the two spend time admiring the city.

When it is time to leave, the tabbies hop back into one of the elevators. When they reach the second floor, they decide not to walk back down the steps but take one of the second set of elevators to the bottom.

“Before we leave, I think we should get something to eat,” Periwinkle tells Stinky. He heartily agrees, and they find a cute cafe nearby with outdoor seating.

Some Fun Facts

While eating, Stinky tells Periwinkle, “I have a fun fact, for you: Today, more than 50 replicas of the Eiffel Tower exist throughout the world.”

“That’s pretty cool, but I don’t think you can replicate this one,” she replies.

“I agree. I do have one more fun fact for you, however.”

“Hit me with it!”

“In 136 years, the Eiffel Tower has been repainted 20 times, which on average is every seven years. The job requires 60 tons of paint. The most recent repainting began in 2019 and, for the first time, included stripping parts of the Tower. It was undertaken for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Over the years, the Tower has been a variety of colors, including red, yellow and various shades of brown. Its current color is a yellow-brown.”

After their lunch, the tabbies head to the teleportation tunnel for the trip back to their cottage. They are so tired when they arrive, they immediately fall into bed and fall fast asleep.
