Thanksgiving

THE ADVENTURES OF PERIWINKLE & STINKY: PART CX

Stinky is more excited than ever for Periwinkle’s arrival. He thinks he has planned a first-rate adventure for them, and is thrilled when she arrives a bit early. With the usual whoosh from the teleportation tunnel Periwinkle tumbles out into his waiting paws. After the usual whisker kisses and paw hugs, Periwinkle asks for details of their destination. Stinky refuses to tell her, grabs her paw and leads her back into the tunnel.

The First Thanksgiving

When they arrive at their destination, Periwinkle blinks several times, as it appears that they have traveled back in time a few hundred years.

“Where are we, Stinky?”

“This is what is now known as Plimoth-Patuxet, previously Plimoth Plantation. It is a replica of Plymouth Colony, the site of the first Thanksgiving in 1621,” Stinky explains.

“Wow, this is the 400th anniversary of the first Thanksgiving. That is very cool!”

“Yes, it is. It was a celebration of the Plymouth colonists first autumn harvest and took place over three days sometime between late September and mid-November,” Stinky tells Periwinkle. “Fifty-two colonists and 90 Wampanoag native Americans celebrated together.”

“This garden doesn’t look very well tended, Stinky? Is this where they grew their pumpkins and sweet potatoes and green beans?”

“Periwinkle, this is a replica from the 17th century, and the Pilgrims didn’t have any of those things to grow or eat,” Stinky tells Periwinkle.

“That doesn’t sound right. Those are traditional Thanksgiving foods. Please tell me that they at least had turkey,” replies Periwinkle.

“Maybe. Though wild turkeys are native to the area, it is just as likely that they ate ducks, geese or swans. The only first-hand  account of the feast says they did eat fowl. The birds would have been stuffed with herbs, onions or nuts. They also had venison, as the Wampanoag killed five deer for the occasion. There really is no first-hand account that lists other food they might have had.”

“Interesting. So, how come we celebrate for only one day at the end of November if the first feast took place sometime between late September and mid-November and lasted for three days?” asks Periwinkle.

Stinky tells Periwinkle that the Continental Congress and several Presidents, including Washington, Lincoln and FDR were involved in proclaiming a day in November  as Thanksgiving, with the first being in 1777.  It was not until 1863, however, when President Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving to officially fall on the last Thursday of November. That’s when the modern holiday was first celebrated nationally.

With some deviations, Lincoln’s precedent was followed annually by his successors. In 1939, Franklin D. Roosevelt departed from tradition by declaring the next to last Thursday that year as Thanksgiving Day. He did that again for two more years, but some Americans refused to honor his declaration. So, on November 26, 1941, FDR admitted his mistake and signed a bill into law making the fourth Thursday in November the official national holiday of Thanksgiving Day.

“Wow, Stinky, that certainly was a long and drawn-out process. Thanks for the history lesson, but can we look around some now?”

“Of course, I have lots of additional information, but I can walk and talk,” Stinky tells her.

Periwinkle gives Stinky an eye roll and look of exasperation, which he doesn’t see either.

Touring Plimouth-Patuxet

“Stinky, their houses sure were shabby looking. I don’t think they had heat or A/C,” Periwinkle exclaims.

Stinky points out the chimneys to Periwinkle and tells her they heated in fireplaces with wood. Also, he tells her that temperatures are cooler here in Massachusetts, and especially were 400 years ago, and they didn’t need A/C. Not to mention, they didn’t have electricity.

Stinky then asks Periwinkle if she’d like to see a replica of a wetu. Periwinkle gives him a quizzical look, and Stinky explains that wetu is the Wampanoag’s word for house.

“Sheesh, Stinky, I don’t think I would like to live here either,” blurts out Periwinkle.

Stinky giggles before telling Periwinkle that families erected these houses at their coastal planting grounds and lived in them throughout the growing season. But when the weather turned cold, the Wampanoag returned to the protection of inland villages. Dwellings in the villages were either long (50 to 60 feet usually), multi-family residences or smaller, round wetuash (plural of wetu). He knows Periwinkle wouldn’t enjoy that.

Stinky can see that Periwinkle is getting bored and says, “I will tell you how they constructed the wetu some other time.”

“Oh thanks, Stinky, as I do not ever plan to build one of these wetu-thingies I’d prefer not to hear about it.”

Visiting the Mayflower Replica

“In that case, lets head to the Mayflower II,” Stinky replies.

“Stinky, this reminds me of the pirate ships from Meow Like a Pirate Day. But I don’t understand why it’s called the Mayflower II.”

Stinky tells Periwinkle that Mayflower II is a reproduction of the 17th-century ship Mayflower. It was built in England in 1955 and ’56. It was sailed to America in 1957, recreating the original voyage across the Atlantic Ocean. As they tour the ship, Stinky refrains from telling Periwinkle more about the ship. Instead he decides to regale her with some information he has learned about turkeys.

Turkey Trivia

“Periwinkle, do you know to what extinct creature the wild turkey is related?”

Periwinkle thinks for a moment before answering with a question in her voice, “The Dodo bird?”

“You know that is not a bad guess, but the Dodo did not live in America. It is actually the T. Rex and the Velociraptor,” Stinky tells Periwinkle.

“I remember hearing that before, Stinky. I just forgot.”

“An adult wild turkey has 5,000 to 6,000 feathers, and turkeys have been around for nearly 10 million years; though, they almost went extinct twice. Also, wild turkeys can fly up to 55 miles per hour, and they sleep in trees.”

Periwinkle tells Stinky that those are all interesting facts, but that she knows something that will really surprise him. “Male turkeys are known for their gobbling sound. Female turkeys, however, cluck like a chicken, yelp when agitated or excited or purr like a cat when they are contented. Isn’t that the coolest thing, Stinky?”

“Wow, Periwinkle, I would love to hear that.”

“Me too, Stinky!”

“Periwinkle, I think I’m ready to head home and get some noms. How about you?”

“Oh, yes please. I am famished.”

Paw-in-paw the tabbies head back to the teleportation tunnel. Moments after entering, they arrive at Stinky’s house and Stinky’s mom fixes them some Fancy Feast turkey and giblets with some treats on the side. When they’re full, they visit with Stinky’s fursibs and take a nice long nap.

Finally it is time for Periwinkle to head home. The tabbies share lots of whisker kisses and paw hugs and wish each other a happy Thanksgiving. Then Periwinkle is gone in a whoosh.

The End

ART FROM SUPERHERO SIDEKICK KIZMET

Caturday Art

Today’s art features Kizmet.

SUPERHERO SIDEKICK KIZMET

I used my favorite, tried and true app, Paint, to create this. The effect is “It’s Really Just Art After All” with the hard light filter. As usual the frame is from favpng

I made a puzzle for you as well.

Superhero Sidekicks Calendar

The original photo from which I created today’s art may be the one Helen Woodward Animal Center uses in the 2022 Superhero Sidekicks Calendar. As we were unable to travel to California for a photo session, Dad Tom took a couple of photos for HWAC. At this point, we have no idea which photo was selected for the calendar. We also don’t know which month she will represent

What we do know is that you can pre-order your calendar now by clicking on the graphic below. The Calendar is $18 with a shipping fee of $5. All profits benefit HWAC.

Once again, Kizmet, Dad Tom and I want to thank everyone who made a donation to HWAC and voted for Kizmet in the contest. Here’s the link to the post where I announced her eighth place finish, “We Couldn’t Have Had a More Thankful Week.”

Sunday Selfies Reminder

Can you believe we are winding down to the conclusion of another year of sharing our selfies on Sunday? I don’t know where the year has gone, but it will soon be no more than a memory. So, it’s time to pop in front of that cell phone or camera and snap your very own selfie. As Thanksgiving is just a few days away, dress it up with a fall or Thanksgiving theme if you would like. I am not certain which of the Kitties Blue will be your host tomorrow, but I am fairly certain there will be some bribery (treats) involved in securing their selfie.

Until then have a terrific Caturday.

OUR OVER-STUFFED TURKEY CAT

Late post today and not because I was Black Friday shopping. I was just too over-stuffed and pooped last night and didn’t feel like doing it. But I already had done my fill-ins and prepared a Feline Friday photo, so I decided I couldn’t punt all together.

Feline/Friendship Friday Friday

For those of you who follow Dad Tom on Facebook, you will have already seen this photo (but not as a meme). However, I couldn’t let him have all the fun with it.

May I present our very own 20-pound, catnip-stuffed turkey.

OVER-STUFFED TURKEY

Yesterday we had a gorgeous day with a temperature in the low 70s. We spent a good portion of the day on the catio with Kitties Blue. I suggested we put out the last of this year’s catnip. To be fair, Cooper Murphy shared a tiny amount with Astrid, Misty May, C.J. and Sawyer. On the unfair side of this equation, Cooper Murphy was the only cat to get a small bite or Cornish game hen.

Cooper Murphy is joining the Feline Friday blog hop at Comedy Plus and the Friendship Friday blog hop at Create With Joy. You can do the same by clicking on the appropriate badge.

Friendly Fill-Ins

Kitties Blue and I are sending a big post-Thanksgiving thank you to Ellen (15 And Meowing) and Lorianne (Four-Legged Furballs) for providing us with the fun activity of completing four sentences especially selected by them. Here are this week’s sentences with my fill-ins in teal italics.

1. Why is veterinarian care so expensive?

2. On holidays, I always have a second serving of nothing in particular.

3. I’m eternally grateful for being a senior citizen.

4. ‘Tis the season for spending time with friends and family; though, that is a no-no this year.

If you would like to join in the fun of Fill-Ins, check out Ellen and Lorianne’s blogs on Thursday. To join the hop, click on the badge above.

Praying everyone stayed in their pod and still managed to have a great Thanksgiving. Regardless of the virus and the myriad of natural disasters that have occurred this year, we still have much for which to be thankful. At the top of that list for Dad Tom and I and Kitties Blue are our friends, which include all those who follow and support us. Thanks again!

Thoroughly Poetic Thursday

In addition to sharing our thankfuls each Thursday, Kitties Blue and I participate in the Two Spoiled Cats’ (Teddy and Angel Sammy) poetry challenge. They provide an inspiration photo, and participants use that as a jumping off point for a poem.

Here’s the photo and my poem.

Christmas Overload

Did Christmas throw up on this house?
I’m surprised they forgot Mickey Mouse.
This must have taken months to complete
And probably produces lots of heat.
I imagine the power meter spinning fast
And a January electric bill quite vast.
I love Christmas and lots of lights,
But these folks have gone to ridiculous heights
To show off their holiday spirit to their neighbors
And impress them with their monumental labors.
I hope they still had time to enjoy the season—
Otherwise for this huge display I see no reason!

THANKSGIVING DAY THANKFULS

Thankful Thursday

On this Thanksgiving Day Kitties Blue, Dad Tom and I are thankful to have each other. And, of course, we are thankful to have all of you, our friends and followers, in our lives.

Sawyer has some thankfuls today as well. He did not have a terrific Gotcha Day, as he had a seizure that evening. But he is grateful for all the good wishes he received on his special day as well as lots of treaties.

He is sending special thanks to friends Noelle (Friends Furever) and Pipo, Dalton and Benji (Meezer’s Mews and Terrieristical Woofs) who sent these cards.

I also have a special thankful this week. With no help from Astrid, who decided lying across the iPad was her sworn duty, I won a badge on the Tuesday Teaser at Two Spoiled Cats. I should have been one of the first commenters as well as the first right guesser, but Astrid had other things in mind, like getting love and attention. She refused to let me type, and then she had me leaving comments on the wrong post. Nonetheless, I got a special Thanksgiving badge for being a Right Guesser.

Thoroughly Poetic Thanksgiving Thursday

As we do each Thursday, we are participating in Angel Sammy and Teddy’s (Two Spoiled Cats) poetry challenge. They provide an inspiration photo for participants. This being Thanksgiving, I decided to interpret this week’s photo as representative of the holiday.

Thanksgiving Day Outing

A rare treat for mom and son
A trip to the Thanksgiving Day parade.
The youngster too excited to complain
About the long trek from the subway.
Anticipation of balloons and bands
enough to keep him on a steady course.
Unfortunately, Millie, the dog doesn’t share
Her young human’s enthusiasm. She planted
Her butt on the sidewalk, refused to budge.
Now she rides while her young master
Charges ahead; Mom pushes the sleeping dog.
Passersby stare and chuckle, shake their
Heads at the silliness of the scene.
But neither mom nor son notice,
Thankful and excited to spend the day
Together enjoying the once yearly event.

MAURICIO MELANGE

Caturday Art

It seems my tastes have been running to the psychedelic lately. Again this week, I have created some wild and bright art with a napping Mau as the subject. The transformation began with the Sunset effect (with a change of hue) from the Painnt app. I followed that with a marbled ink effect from picMonkey to which I added the hard light filter. Next came the abstract filter at 50% from piZap, and finally the peach colored border was added with Picasa.

Thoroughly Poetic Thursday on Caturday

Kitties Blue have finally written a poem to accompany this week’s inspiration photo provided by Teddy and Angel Sammy from Two Spoiled Cats. They feel the need to continue to apologize to our hosts, as they do not consider their poem up to the high standards set by Sammy. Here’s the photo, which you most likely have already seen.

Thanksgiving Lament

On Thanksgiving Day we ate our fill…
Turkey, cranberries and pumpkin pie.
We were so stuffed, we thought we’d die.

When we laid ourselves down in our beds,
Our tummies were heavy and our heads a mess.
Oh how we wished we’d eaten less.

After falling asleep our dreams were crazy.
A funny green man appeared with no explanation.
He was covered in various types of vegetation.

His nose could have housed an entire rodent city.
And his huge, glassy eyes looked really scary.
His presence in our dreams made us quite wary.

We hoped he’d gone when we woke up
And hadn’t decided to come live with us,
Unless he did harbor mice…that would be a plus.

We slunk about stealthily when we arose
In hopes the creature we wouldn’t find
And, thankfully, discovered he was only in our minds.

We pray we’ll never see the green meanie again.
So next Thanksgiving, if we discover a meal so tasty,
We plan to use good sense and be less hasty.

Ah, heck, who are we kidding! Bring on the noms!

Sunday Selfies Reminder

It’s time to wake up from your turkey coma and clean those Thanksgiving leftovers from your whiskers. That’s right…another week has flown right on past, and it’s time for you to snap your selfie. We may even have a surprise host tomorrow, but that is yet to be determined. So, you’ll need to drop in to see who is here. We are looking forward to seeing everyone’s smiling faces.

THANKSGIVING GREETINGS FROM KITTIES BLUE

A Thanksgiving Thankful Thursday

It is with an apology to Teddy and Angel Sammy that we are not posting a poem today for Thoroughly Poetic Thursday. We are doing a brief Thanksgiving post for Thankful Thursday and will combine poetry with Friendly Fill-Ins on Friday.

Our mom and dad are thankful that they get to spend the holiday with some of Dad Tom’s family, and they are thankful for pie, both the pre-pies the last two days and then the pecan and pumpkin ones Mom will make for today.

We are thankful for our home and humans, good friends, nommy treats and nip. The latter two are being provided in abundance by Chris as she takes care of us.

For your entertainment, we got Mom to make a Jib-Jab for us. It’s just the Kitties Blue boys (Sawyer, Mau and Cooper Murphy) and our friends, Teddy (Two Spoiled Cats) and Raz (Friends Furever). To see it click on the link below.

THANKSGIVING-THEMED FILL-INS

Friday Fill-Ins Week #131

Friendly Fill-Ins is a weekly blog hop hosted by Ellen (15 And Meowing) and Lorianne (Four-Legged Furballs). We participate each week, as we think it is nice to get to know our fellow bloggers a bit better.

Each Thursday Ellen and Lorianne post four sentences to be completed. Then the participants post their filled-in sentences on Friday. The hop is at Four-Legged Furballs. Click on the badge at the left to go there.

I completed the Fill-Ins this week except for #1, which Kitties Blue completed. Our completions are in teal italics.

1. Kitties Blue: I We can’t wait to have nip and treats on Thanksgiving. (While Mom and Dad are having Thanksgiving with Dad Tom’s family, Chris will be spoiling us!)

2. I am thankful for having the opportunity to spend Thanksgiving with family again this year.

3. When it comes to pie, pumpkin and pecan are best at Thanksgiving, but my very favorite is apricot.

4. A feast is not a feast without others to share it with you.

When Mau saw the theme of this week’s Fill-Ins, he asked if he could stop in today in his turkey costume. He’s really cute, so I could not turn him down. And after all, he really is a big “turkey” most days!

THANKSGIVING WISHES FROM KITTIES BLUE

Thoroughly Poetic Thanksgiving Thursday

Today’s prompt letter should be “X,” an exceptionally hard letter to poetize about. Being the good pal that he is, angel Sammy gave us all permission to chose our own subject. He didn’t even post any suggestion words. We are quite thankful for this!

As you might expect, we decided to write a poem of Thanksgiving for our Mom and Dad. Though it lists some of our many transgressions, our humans understand we are cats and mostly do as we please.

Thankful for the Bestest Mom and Dad

Sometimes Kitties Blue are not well behaved.
We act as if we’re totally depraved.
We whine and caterwaul for our dinner…
Can’t help it if we don’t want to get thinner.
We ask to go in and out dozens of times a day;
It is one of our favorite games to play.
We camp on the stairs so no others can pass.
Yeah, sometimes each of us can be a gigantic ass.
We like to wrestle and bite each other on the necks.
I guess you could say we are the worst smart alecks.
Growling, hissing and spitting can be fun,
When we can make the other kitty squeal and run.
All of these pastimes drive the humans to distraction,
As they try to stop us from committing each infraction.
We pay them back by sleeping east/west in their bed
Or, like Misty May, upon their faces or heads.
You’d think we’re not fit to live in a house…
That we should be outside to catch a mouse
And have it for our breakfast, lunch and dinner,
As punishment for our being incessant sinners.
But our humans love us. We know this to be true.
It doesn’t matter what we meyowl or do.
So today we thank them for giving us a home
From which we have no desire to roam.
And good noms, snuggles, scritches and kisses.
We are kitties whose lives are filled with riches.
Happy Thanksgiving to our Mom and Dad.
Now fetch us some turkey or we’ll be very bad!

Thankful Thanksgiving Thursday

We have so much for which to be thankful, as we outlined above. We also are thankful for all our blogging friends. The relationships we have made over the past five-plus years are precious to all of us and Mom nd Dad as well. We wish you all a blessed day filled with love and happiness.

Thankful Thursday is a blog hop hosted by our friend, Brian. To join the hop click on his badge. We are sending Brian a special thank you for hosting this hop and a reason to reflect each week on all the things for which are thankful.

Finally a photo for you from our favorite and original turkey, Lily Olivia.

Lily Olivia wishes you a happy Thanksgiving.

THANKSGIVING-THEMED FILL-INS

Friendly Fill-Ins: Week #80

1. I can’t wait to eat pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving. I will be making it using my grandma’s recipe, so I know it will be just how I like it.

2. My favorite kind of pie is apricot. I’ve never made one. The best place for apricot pie is The Hickory Pit in California. I went twice when we were there in September and got a piece each time.

3. This year, I am particularly thankful for having the opportunity to spend Thanksgiving with family. It will be the first time doing so since Tom and I were married.

Friendly Fill-Ins

Bud and Tom Blue – 2002

4. A funny holiday tradition in my/our house is not really funny but a “joke,” as well as a tradition, among Tom’s family. If any of the kids or grandkids wanted to remain in Tom’s dad’s will, they had to make and eat cranberry relish on Thanksgiving. We still make it every year as do two of Tom’s nephews; though, Tom’s dad passed away 10 years ago. We will be spending Thanksgiving with those nephews and their families. The tradition has moved on to the next generation, and the great grandkids will be collaborating on making the relish!

I am joining Ellen (15 And Meowing) and Annie’s Friendly Fill-Ins blog hop. My completions are in orange italics this week. To join the hop, click on the badge, which will take you to Annie’s blog, McGuffy’s Reader.

As this is a cat blog, Kitties Blue said it is a requirement that I post a feline photo, especially as I did not do so yesterday. They are quite insulted that yesterday’s post included a squirrel and a cardinal only.

In keeping with the theme of today’s fill-ins, our favorite turkey cat is making an encore appearance.
