REMEMBER ME THURSDAY WITH KITTIES BLUE

Remember Me Thursday

Today is the one day a year we remember all those animals that have lost their lives while waiting in shelters for adoption as well as those still waiting. Though the numbers have consistently decreased over the past decade, more than one million pets are euthanized annually. That truly breaks my heart!

Mike Arms, President and CEO of Helen Woodward Animal Center created this day, and it is celebrated around the world. Kitties Blue and I have been participating for many years. This day offers each of us the opportunity to share the story of pet adoption and let others know the joys of sharing their home with an animal. Changing just one mind about pet adoption can save a life.

You can spread awareness by sharing your pet’s story on social media with the hashtags, #RememberMeThursday and #SeeTheLight. Also visit the Remember Me Thursday website and light a virtual candle. I lit one for Misty May before publishing this post. I also will be lighting candles at home today. If you plan to do the same and have pets in your home, please use battery operated candles. (I will be using battery operated tea lights provided to me by the Remember Me Thursday organization.)

Kitties Blue

As most of you know, all of our past and present felines have been rescued in one way another. Several just showed up and asked to live here. Many others were the offspring of pregnant strays taken in by friends or friends of friends. Two, Lisbeth and Kizmet, were adopted from a local shelter (Angels of Assisi) and two, Astrid and Calista Jo, from a local TNR/Rescue group (Barn Cat Buddies). Dad Tom and I totally believe in “Adopt Don’t Shop.”

I really don’t like to think what might have happened to our 22 kitties and yes, two dogs, had Dad Tom and I not brought them into our home to care for and love.

Today I am sharing two collages with some of our past Remember Me Thursday photos and badges as well as the one I created for Audrey to share this year.

Thoroughly Poetic Thursday

As today is Thoroughly Poetic Thursday, I am sharing three poems from previous Remember Me Thursday posts. I am hoping Teddy and Angel Sammy (Two Spoiled Cats) will forgive us for not using today’s inspiration photo. You can still check out Angel Sammy’s Poem by clicking on his badge.

PLEASE OPT TO ADOPT ORPHAN CATS

Most of us were orphans at one time,
Whether roaming the streets or shelter confined.
But then one day our luck suddenly changed.
A human stopped in whose heart we would claim.
They took us home to keep us safe forever
With food, shelter and love as our caregiver.
So today, will you please a candle light
And pray for the orphans to not give up the fight,
As they wait and long for their special human
To find them and become their number one fan.

LUCKY CAT

My name is Sawyer and I’m a tough little dude.
I’ve tons of moxie and a can-do attitude.
I am a Manx cat, which means I have no tail.
I’m also a grey tabby cat and a male.
I was found on the deck at a vacant house,
Living off of bugs and the occasional mouse.
Less than three pounds I weighed when I was found.
I thank God I wasn’t taken to the pound
but brought to a house on Thanksgiving weekend.
I didn’t know for myself I’d no longer need to fend.
I also didn’t know there were eight other cats
,
Or I’d be living a life only my wildest dreams could surpass.
When I was allowed to mingle, I made friends with a calico.
Her name was Lily Olivia and she was very old.
She died a couple months later as a matter of fact.
She was almost nineteen and, like me, a rescued cat,
I can only dream of becoming such a revered senior,
As I have a seizure disorder and my prognosis is poor.
It is hard to be just two years old and afflicted this way
And need to take medicine four times each day.
My seizures can be very scary.
Never knowing when one will happen makes Mom wary.
I’ve had a few that my humans were unable to stop,
Then into the car we have all had to hop.
My dad then drives us to the emergency vet
To get me stable and back home to rest.
Where with any luck I’ll have some quiet days
To spend on the catio and at the birdies gaze.
I have a big brother named Cooper Murphy.
He’s a huge ginger tabby and really quite goofy.
Like me he was rescued from living outside
When it was winter and snowing with no place to hide.
There are six more cats with whom I coexist.
Most are nice; while others are misfits.
They all can be a gigantic pain in my tush.
Nevertheless, I am one lucky puss.
I have a loving home in which to dwell
Where my life is grand and I’m treated swell.
And now I pray all animals can find good homes
And, like me, never again the streets have to roam.

Thankful Thursday

Dad Tom and I are thankful for each of the Kitties Blue who have been and are currently part of our lives. Some have liked us more than others. Nonetheless, each has brought joy and love into our lives.

All the Kitties Blue and I are joining the Thankful Thursday blog hop at Brian’s Home. You can do the same by clicking on his badge.

Thank you for joining us on this very special day.

REMEMBER ME THURSDAY 2022

#SeeTheLight

Did you know that 100 percent of Kitties Blue were stray/feral/abandoned, born to a stray mom or adopted from a rescue? Not all kitties (and other companion animals) are as fortunate as Kitties Blue. Last year we shared the history of how each of our cats, except, of course, newbies, Audrey and Raleigh, became a member of the Kitties Blue crew. You can read about those histories on the post, “Kitties Blue: Remembering to #SeeTheLight.

Today is Remember Me Thursday, a world-wide event sponsored by the Helen Woodward Animal Center. Its mission is to help everyone #SeeTheLight about pet adoption by remembering and honoring pets awaiting forever homes as well as those who lost their lives waiting to be adopted. It’s also intended to encourage individuals to spay and neuter their pets and to adopt pets waiting in shelters for forever homes.

#SeeTheLight: Large ginger cat holds a sign for #SeeTheLight for pet adoption.

Disclaimer: Items with the Remember Me Thursday logo appearing in this post were provided to me free of charge to promote Remember Me Thursday on my social media accounts: The Cat on My Head blog and Instgram at Kitties.Blue.

Here are some facts from the Remember Me Thursday website.

More than 50 percent of U.S. households have at least one pet. Even so, 6,000,000 cats and dogs enter animal shelters in the United States each year. While many pets are fortunate to find a loving, forever home due to the efforts of rescue organizations, each year over 900,000 cats spend the final moments of their lives in a shelter.

How to Help

According to the site, Pet Pedia, 625,000 pets were euthanized in 2019. That is a staggering number, but according to the Helen Woodward Animal Center, orphan pets could avoid this fate with more help from us. You can help by adopting from your local shelter or rescue and encouraging your friends to do the same. And if you can’t adopt, please consider fostering or sponsoring.

To learn more about what you can do, visit, “Information to Inspire” on the Remember Me Thursday site.

You also can help your local shelter or rescue by entering your rescue pet’s story in the Remembering Me Thursday Contest. Here’s what you need to do to enter:

  • Submit your pet’s photo and story directly to the contest page.
  • Or, post a picture of your best friend on social media using both the hashtags #RememberMeThursday and #SeeTheLight.

Deadline for entry is September 30.

You can check out all the great prizes on the website.

In 2020, we shared this poem and wanted to share it again. We will share our Thoroughly Poetic Thursday poem tomorrow.

Thankful Thursday

Dad Tom are thankful that we have been able to give a home to 22 cats.

Sawyer, Dad Tom and I are thankful he hasn’t had a seizure in 29 days. He needs some POTP, however, has he has been particularly bad about eating lately. That is usually the precursor to a seizure.

Cooper Murphy is thankful that Helen Woodward Animal Center included some toys with the Remember Me Thursday supplies.

FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS

Sparks

dreams

I selected today’s Spark, as I think it is a good reminder for all of us and as a lead in to some news from my state, Virginia, which I want to share.

The General Assembly recently passed a bill introduced by State Senator Bill Stanley. This bill gives cats and dogs used in testing situations the opportunity to be released to an adoption agency and find their very own loving homes. Stanley said, “We should reward those dogs and cats with a forever home and not discard them when they are considered no longer useful.” These dogs and cats are normally euthanized.

I don’t agree with animal testing, but I am delighted these animals will be given a second chance.

Sparks is the creation of Annie from McGuffy’s Reader. Sparks began as a blog hop, created by our friend. Annie stated when she began Sparks,“I believe we are meant to be lights in this world. If we allow our light to shine, we can see where we are going. It is then that we can begin to truly see each other clearly. Together, we can light up the entire world.”

Awww Mondays

On February 12, I shared the “Cat Train” with you. That train consisted of only the engine and caboose (Calista Jo and Sawyer) of this train. Today’s train has a sleeping car cat (Kizmet).

The Adventures of Periwinkle & Stinky

Your favorite, fun-loving tabbies will be sharing another of their adventures tomorrow. Stinky and Periwinkle will be celebrating the birthday of Dr. Seuss with a very special adventure. His birthday is celebrated as Read Across America Day, which is a big deal in the blogosphere. Stinky and Periwinkle also will join Timmy, Ranger and Emmy (who are hosting this year’s event).

REMEMBER ME THURSDAY® 2020

Uniting the World for Orphan Pets

About 6.5 million animals enter animal shelters across the United States annually. In 2019, 733,000 of those were euthanized.

Remember Me Thursday® (in its eighth year) is a global awareness campaign encouraging individuals to light a candle (literally or virtually) and opt to adopt orphan pets waiting in shelters and rescues.

We are joining Remember Me Thursday® and have lit a candle at RememberMeTursday.org in remembrance of Angels Mau and Allie (Friends Furever).

Candles lit on this day (the fourth Thursday of September annually) across the world honor the pets who lose their lives without knowing the comforts of a loving home. Of course, both Allie and Mau had wonderful homes,

These candles shine brightly on the millions of healthy pets who are still awaiting adoption. We pray all those pets will be as lucky as Mau and Allie were.

Our Youngest Rescues

Cooper Murphy and Sawyer were fortunate to become members of the Kitties Blue household. Neither made it as far as a shelter. Cooper was abandoned during a snow storm. Sawyer appeared at the vacant house next door to ours on Thanksgiving. Had Cooper Murphy been dropped off at a shelter, he probably would have found a home. Instead he was left to fend for himself alone outdoors. Sawyer on the other paw, with his seizure disorder, likely would not have been so lucky had he been taken to a shelter.

They are here today promoting Remember Me Thursday® to remind everyone that all pets deserve a warm and loving home.

Remember Me Thursday®

A few years ago, I wrote a poem about Kitties Blue to promote pet adoption and am sharing an updated version this year.

REMEMBER ME THURSDAY® 2018

In one way or another all present Kitties Blue as well as past Kitties Blue are rescues. We either wandered up to Mom and Dad’s door, were adopted from a rescue or from a friend or stranger who had taken in a stray, pregnant kitty. That is 19 cats who were given the opportunity for a life with a loving family. We are a very tiny percentage of the lucky ones.

According to The America Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASCPA), approximately 7.6 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year. Of those, approximately 3.4 million are cats. Each year, approximately 2.7 million animals are euthanized (1.4 million cats). The Humane Society of the United States estimates that represents 70 percent of cats in shelters. The ASCPA adds that of cats entering shelters, approximately 37% are adopted, 41% are euthanized, and less than 5% of cats who came in as strays are returned to their owners.

The statistics are appalling.

Remember Me Thursday® Awareness Movement

“Remember Me Thursday® is a global awareness campaign uniting individuals and pet adoption organizations around the world as an unstopable, integrated voice for orphan pets to live in forever homes, not die waiting for them.”

On the last Thursday in September, the entire world shares the importance of pet adoption by shining a light on all orphan pets waiting in shelters and rescues. In 2017, people using #RememberMeThursday reached nearly 330 million people on social media.

IT’S OFFICIAL!

Tabby Tuesday: Introducing Sawyer Blue

If you joined us for Sunday Selfies, you met this kitten, who had taken up residence in our living room. Chris discovered him when Mom and Dad were in Atlanta for Thanksgiving. He was hanging out on the deck of the vacant house next-door.

It's Official...new kid brother for Kitties Blue.

Mom posted “found” cat notices on all the appropriate web-sites but received no replies. So today, this 3.9 pound, grey tabby Manx officially became our kid brother, Sawyer.

He visited Dr. Neel this afternoon. He was checked for a microchip, and none was found. Sawyer was also tested for FIV and FeLV and is negative for both. He does have an upper respiratory infection, which we knew. He’ll be getting medicine in his eyes for a week and oral amoxicillin for ten days. When Sawyer is well, he’ll start getting his vaccinations. After the first of the year, he’ll have his boy bits removed.

It's official...Sawyer's first trip to the vet.

As Mom predicted, Dr. Neel confirmed that Sawyer is about four months old.

Mom also is certain Fiona sent this little fur ball to us. It will be one year this Friday since she left us and flew away to the Bridge. Mom was sure of it when Sawyer pooped in the PTU on the way home from meeting Dr. Neel. That was always Fiona’s way of letting her and Dad know her displeasure about yet another trip to the vet’s office.

I hope you will join us in welcoming Sawyer to our family. He was unplanned, but most good things begin as surprises!

HOLY CR@P…WHAT’S THIS?

Sunday Selfies: Week # 172

We were totally looking forward to having Mom and Dad home from Atlanta. They left us on Tuesday to spend Thanksgiving with family. Of course, we were in good hands. Chris spoiled us with nip and treats and even wished us a Happy Thanksgiving on Thursday. Mom checked in often through the PetCube cam, talked to and played red dot with us. Guess it could have been worse…

AND NOW IT IS!

Check out this “selfie.”

Interloper requests selfie.

Moments after entering the house, Dad found a note from Chris about a stray kitten she’d been feeding the last couple of days. She had set it up in a box with warm blankets on the deck of the vacant house next door. Before we could blink or meyowl our protests, the kitten was set up in our living room with all the comforts of home.

The kitten is a totally human-socialized, grey tabby Manx. Mom thinks it is a boy, but didn’t want to be too intrusive. After all, they just met.

Kitty has the sniffles and maybe a bit of a weepy eye. Mom has already posted a photo and description on our neighborhood forum. We all have our paws crossed that this little interloper will be claimed. She will post on all the other on-line lost and found pet sites later today.

As you can see, this baby needed help with a selfie. We know all of you are masters of the selfie and can probably manage on your own. So…what are you waiting for? Get that selfie snapped and added to the hop.

Hopping Guidelines

If you are new to hopping, here are some guidelines for joining this one.

  • The link to add your selfie to the hop is below.
  • You also will find below the code to use if you’d like the hop to appear on your blog.
  • Posting on Sundays is not necessary to join.
  • You do not need to be a cat to enter. All anipals are welcome regardless of species.
  • The hop remains open for entries through Thursday midnight.
  • Please be so kind as to display our badge and/or link to The Cat on My Head.

Big News Tomorrow

We are now participating in the Sparks blog hop each Monday. This hop was established and is hosted by our friend, Annie, from McGuffy’s Reader. Sparks is an opportunity to post an inspirational quote and/or photo as a pick-me-up for your fellow bloggers. Ours for tomorrow will include some exceptionally great news, so we are inviting everyone to visit. Surprises are so much fun…don’t you think? Well, maybe surprises that don’t include a kitten in the living room.

Anyhoo, until then…

With purrs and paw-pats, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, angel Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth, Calista Jo and Cooper Murphy

REMEMBER ME THURSDAY 2017

Remember Me Thursday

Official Partner Remember Me Thursday & #RememberTheRescue

We are joining Remember Me Thursday® as an “Official Partner” and have lit a candle at RememberMeThursday.org for our Charlotte. The Remember Me Thursday® global awareness campaign encourages individuals to light a candle this day (literally or virtually) and to opt to adopt, reducing the millions of orphan pets euthanized each year.

Charlotte is the kitty we currently sponsor at PAWS of Connecticut. Charlotte is between three and four years old. She was a stray living on the streets with a litter of kittens. A kind lady started taking care of mom and kittens, but could not bring her into her home. Fearing Charlotte and the female kittens would become pregnant, she took them to PAWS.

Charlotte is said to be shy, but she’s also sweet and gentle. She loves to be petted and brushed and will make air biscuits when her tummy is rubbed. She is good with other cats but timid around small children.

Charlotte is spayed, current on her vaccinations, microchipped and negative for FIV and FeLV.

If you would be interested in adopting Charlotte, or know someone who might be, please click on the PAWS link above.

Candles lit on this day (the fourth Thursday of September annually), across the world, honor the pets who lose their lives without the opportunity to know the comforts of a loving home. These candles shine brightly on the millions of healthy pets who are still awaiting adoption—just like our calico friend, Charlotte.

Remember Me Thursday

This being Angel Sammy and Teddy’s (Two Spoiled Cats) Thoroughly Poetic Thursday, I am resharing the poem I wrote last year for this occasion. This week’s prompt letter is “P.” This poem, however, was written originally for an “O” prompt. I made two subtle changes to meet today’s challenge. (To see Sammy’s poem and find links to other poems, click on the link above.)

FLOWERY ART & JACKSON GALAXY

Caturday Art

Here’s our cheery and colorful art for Athena Cat Goddess Wise Kitty’s Caturday Art blog hop. Even with the wide array of colors, I think you will recognize ginger kitty, Cooper Murphy. As I like to do, I used a few different apps to transform the photo below. The Lunapic Nouveau art filter and glass tile effect were added first. I then increased the saturation and added a red border using Picasa. The flower border is from piZap.

To view other art and/or submit some off your own, click on Athena’s badge.

Kitten Impossible

If you are a fan of Jackson Galaxy, like I am, you won’t want to miss the episode of My Cat from Hell on Animal Planet, tonight (June 3) at 8 p.m. P/E and 7 p.m. central. Jackson Galaxy teams up with Hannah Shaw (a.k.a. the Kitten Lady) to transport 50 kittens on a life-saving road trip, as part of his Operation Homeward Bound program, to the Humane Society of Boulder Valley, where Galaxy got his start. You can also drop by the live video Q&A on the My Cat From Hell Facebook page prior to the show (7:30 Eastern/4:30pm Pacific).

I was fortunate to interview Galaxy by telephone in November 2015. If you missed the series of posts that resulted from that interview, you can read them by clicking on their titles: Jackson Galaxy Interview; Jackson Galaxy Interview Part 2 & Catify to Satisfy Review; and Jackson Galaxy Interview Part 3.

Sunday Selfie Reminder

Well, it’s time again to hijack your human’s phone or camera and take a stunning selfie of yourself to share on our blog hop tomorrow. Participation has fallen off the last couple of weeks, so Kitties Blue and I hope to see you here tomorrow. This week we are dedicating our post to Dash Kitten‘s Dusty, who recently received his angel wings. Please come by and pay tribute to him.

IT’S OFFICIAL: WELCOMING NEW FAMILY MEMBER

Not Charlie is the newest member of the Kitties Blue Krew (as Angel Sammy Kimmell likes to call them).

Not Charlie visited Dr. Neel today at Vinton Veterinary Hospital, and he was cleared to meet the current, resident furballs. He is:

  • not microchipped
  • FIV and FLV negative
  • a healthy, young adult between the ages of one and two years
  • 12.1 pounds

So…drumroll, please! I’d like to introduce you to

Cooper Murphy Blue

newest family member - Cooper Murphy

Cooper Murphy was totally chill at the vet. He didn’t flinch when he got his vaccinations. He hung out on the exam table looking around the room while his blood tests were being run.  We don’t know where Angel Fiona found this young fellow, but she certainly selected a winner for us.

It hurts my heart that Fiona had to leave in order for Cooper Murphy to come into our lives and adopt us. But we are happy we can give a home to a kitty who did not have one.

Friendly Fill-Ins: Week #36

FriendlyFillInsI am participating in Fill-Ins again this week after skipping last week. This is a blog hop hosted by Annie (McGuffy’s Reader) and Ellen (15 and Meowing). They each select two partial sentences for participants to complete. Ellen selects the first two and Annie the second. My completions are in teal italics. This is a blog hop, and you can join on Annie’s blog by clicking on the Fill-Ins badge.

3. Truth be told I am superstitious about Friday the 13th, which today is. The reason is that my mom died on Friday the 13th, and she was superstitious about a lot of things.
4. Lately, I have been spending a lot of time with new family member Cooper Murphy (Not Charlie) to make him feel at home here. I think that goal as been accomplished.
