SCARED OR SCARY?

Caturday Art

Caturday Art with Mau and burning filament in a scary hop submission.

Do you think I look scary or scared?

This is probably one of Mom’s most uncomplicated art creations to date. She selected a photo of me from last weekend’s selfie photo shoot and used PicMonkey to overlay a photo Dad took. Then she added a border with piZap and a frame with Picasa.

Here’s the photo she used for the overlay. It is a burning filament in a broken light bulb.

caturdayartbannerThis is our entry in Athena Cat Goddess Wise Kitty’s Caturday Art blog hop. We enter a few hops each week, but this is Mom’s very favorite. If you haven’t tried it yet, what are you waiting for? With all the holidays coming up, we can’t think of a better time to try out your creativity. To get the links to the other hop submissions and/or add one of your, click on Athena’s badge.

Thank You

Fiona asked me to convey her sincerest thanks for the kind and supportive comments on yesterday’s post, especially, Sammy‘s. We know that without all the purrs, prayers, good thoughts, POTP and friendship, the past ten months since her diagnosis of CKD would have been much more difficult for her and our humans. She is a fighter, and we are fairly certain she’ll do all she can to stay with us as long as possible.

Sunday Selfies

Cat4-001Tomorrow is that day of the week when we all try to put on our best expressions and snap a selfie for our blog hop. We will have a guest host tomorrow. It’s a super cute one, but that’s the only hint you get. Hope lots and lots of you will join us tomorrow and invite your friends to hop as well.

Until tomorrow, this is Mauricio signing off with purrs and paw-pats for all and love and smooches for my sweet wife, Allie.

CELEBRATING OUR FREEDOM

As you celebrate today, please remember that this can be a scary and dangerous holiday and not just for us kitties. Please keep children and pets away from all fireworks. Every year, humans are injured and fires are started by improper handling of fireworks.

Our pawrents always watch our city’s fireworks from the safety of home. (The center photo of our collage was taken by our dad from the deck above our catio.) We remain safely in the house with all the doors and windows closed.

Celebrating Our Freedom

We have chosen our angel brofur, Madison, and Astrid to represent us today as their furs look stunning with the addition of the USA filter from Dreamscope.

As America celebrates the 240th anniversary of the signing of The Declaration of Independence, we are proud to be Americans and members of this great nation. Below is a copy of the document that made it all possible.

Wishing you a safe and sane holiday, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Jo

C.J. TAKES HER HOLIDAY SERIOUSLY

In 1996 No Greater Love, an humanitarian organization based in Washington, D.C., established the National Moment of Remembrance. After questioning school children about the meaning of Memorial Day and finding they were totally unaware of it’s purpose, No Greater Love hoped to raise public awareness of America’s heroes and their valor. The idea clicked with President Bill Clinton and Congress. Since 1997, it has become a standard American tradition. National Moment of Remembrance requires everybody to be silent for a minute, exactly at 3.00 pm (local time), and reflect on the glory of those who have died in service to our country.

Calista Jo, after spending her holiday watching birdie T.V. on the catio, decided to extend her minute of silence into an afternoon snooze in a sunpuddle. Her paw and the base of the catio’s cat condo/tree became her pillow.

C.J. Takes National Moment of Remembrance on Memorial Day holiday seriously.

How ever you spent your holiday yesterday, we pray that you took a moment to remember and honor those Americans who gave their lives to ensure our freedom.

We pray for and thank all of those currently serving our country.

A POEM FOR MEMORIAL DAY

Today our country celebrates Memorial Day. This federal holiday originated as Decoration Day. It was established in the United States to remember those who have died while serving in the country’s armed forces. Decoration Day was established after the American Civil War in 1868. The Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union veterans founded in Decatur, Illinois, set aside this day as a time for the nation to decorate graves of Union war dead with flowers. By the 20th century, competing Union and Confederate holiday traditions (celebrated on different days) had merged, and Memorial Day eventually extended to honor all Americans who died while in the military service.

Memorial Day 2016

Lucy Gilmer Breckinridge Bassett

In honor of Memorial Day, I am sharing a poem I wrote in 1984 after reading, Lucy Breckinridge of Grove Hill: The Journal of a Virginia Girl, 1862-1864.

Lucy Breckinridge was a nineteen-year-old girl who grew up very close to where I have lived since 1976. Three of her brothers and her first fiancé lost their lives in the Civil War. Lucy married Thomas Jefferson Bassett on January 28, 1865. She died just six-months later from typhoid fever.

 Paper Soldier

Driving past Fincastle sepia-
toned visions of Lucy Breckinridge,
like confederate soldiers, infiltrate
my thoughts. Her spirit forever
where Grove Hill once stood.
Civil War—idle days spent
writing letters, praying,
visiting the Bridge, Bonsack,
Buchanan, always waiting
for news of the wounded,
dead, battles lost and won.

A woman born to the wrong
Century, longing, yet
conditioned to reject
desire, to take up a pistol,
join with her brothers—
“Shoot some Yankees,”
or drench Virginia soil
with her blood—no more
precious than any man’s.
Silent yearnings secreted
100 years in her journal,
like a squirrel’s forgotton
winter nuts, now blaze
in my mind like cannon fire.

I suspect those who established this holiday had no idea how many American lives would be lost in subsequent wars and military conflicts. According to PBS News Hour that number is now in excess of 1.1 million. The enormity of that number truly saddens me. Today, all those who have lost their lives, as well as those who have lost loved ones and friends, are in my thoughts and prayers.

KITTIES BLUE JOIN DRESS UP FOR WHITLEY DAY

Dress Up for Whitley Day

Today we join the many friends of Whitley Westie by pawticipating in a special day to honor and remember this spunky, little woofie angel. Whitley earned her wings on May 5, but she remains with all of us in our hearts.

Whitley was known for her fashion sense and the gorgeous dresses her momma made for her. That’s why we are honoring her with Dress Up for Whitley Day.

As we are not regular wearers of clothes (except the virtual type), our mom thought it would be okay to share previously-posted photos from the few times we did dress up. Only three of us have ever donned clothes, Giulietta, Lily Olivia and Mauricio. They are the kitties pawticipating today. All of Mau’s “outfits” were worn for Cat Scout activities. Giulietta is wearing the bikini from Phoebe’s (15 and Meowing) The Kittyhood of the Traveling Bikini 2015. Lily Olivia is wearing a Captain America shirt that was traveling from blog to blog. This shirt seems to have disappeared somewhere in the blogosphere.

Kitties Blue Dress Up for Whitley Day

We hope lots and lots of you will join us today in honoring this special woofie, Whitley. This is a Blog Hop and you can join below. Thanks to everyone at Dory’s Backyard for having this day to remember our friend Whitley.

Run free, Whitley, and feel the breezes ruffling your lovely white furs. We’ll remember you always.

Purrs and paw-pats, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Jo

EASTER SUNDAY SELFIE

Sunday Selfies: Week #85

Hey, hey…it’s Misty May here for the Easter holiday.

Misty May's Easter Sunday Selfie

Misty May doesn’t take a selfie very often, so I am excited that she is here representing and hosting for Easter. Easter or Spring Holiday, as Dad Tom calls it, is quiet at our house. Tom is always out of town for The Asics Big South Volleyball National Qualifier in Atlanta.

Whether you celebrate Easter or not at your home, we wish you a blessed and sunny day with lots of chocolate eggs and bunnies for the humans, nip for the kitties and treaties for all the other critters.

Cat4-001If you’re not too busy celebrating, hope you’ll join our blog hop. As always, the kitties and I encourage you to invite your friends to join in and to include the hop on your blog. Please just link back to The Cat on My Head and/or display our badge. And if you have any trouble linking up, leave a comment and I’ll link up for you.

Still Working on Our Site

You may notice that our site continues to change. When I tried to update the site to the newest version of WordPress, the files would not upload. Not being in the mood to mess with that process anymore at this point, I continue to try to clean up the site. Our Remembering Friends section, which had been on the sidebar, now has it’s own page as does the Universal Bill of Rights for All Cats (a must read if you missed it) from our recent post of the same name. I will be moving other items from the sidebar to individual pages as well. All of these can be accessed from the menu at the top of each page.

Wishing you all a

Happy Easter and Spring Holiday!

LIMERICKS ON ST. PATRICK’S DAY

Last year for St. Patrick’s Day, Mauricio wrote a limerick that we shared on the blog. If you missed Mau Goes Moo, you can read it here. Mom was going to use it again, but we wanted to collaborate and write a couple of new limericks. We’ve also made collages to wish you all a Happy St. Patrick’s Day and accompany our limericks.

Kitties Blue collaborate to make collages and write limericks.

We’re eight Kitties Blue who like to play
And love to eat treats everyday
But if they’re not turkey,
Or maybe beef jerky,
We’ll turn our heads and run away.

Kitties Blue collaborate to make collages and write limericks.

We’re waiting for a leprechaun
To leave some gold upon our lawn.
You may think that’s funny,
But we need the money.
Our humans we don’t want to pawn.

VALENTINE’S DAY SUNDAY SELFIES

Sunday Selfies: Week 79

When Mom asked us to take some selfies for today’s hop, she failed to tell us to look our best. Until she made this collage, we had no idea that our selfies were going to be turned into a Valentine card for Allie, Charles and Sampy.

Valentine's Day Card

Cat4-001Just look at these photos. Pffft! None of us look our best. Selfies or not, we could have done better than this. Unfortunately it’s too late now to do anything about it. We certainly are happy that each of us sent our significant others something better by snail mail. Humans are totally unreliable. “I certainly don’t want Allie to think I am yelling at her,” says Mau.

This is our Sunday Selfies Blog Hop. If you’d like to join us, the link is below, and the code is below that will allow you to have the hop on your blog. Please display our badge and or link back to The Cat on My Head if you decide to do this.

Calista Jo received a very beautiful Valentine’s Day card via e-mail today. She asked if we would share it with you. It is from the handsome Zorro from The Swiss Cats.
