GIVING THANKS 2015

We wanted to tell you about the things for which we and our humans are giving thanks today.

We asked Mom first. This was here reply.

  • Marrying Dad 42 years ago.
  • Us and the kitties that came before.
  • All her friends, especially those she’s made blogging.

Dad was next to give us his list of thanks.

  • A loving wife and eight loving kitties.
  • A comfortable life.
  • The opportunity to serve others.

Then it was our turn.

  • Mau is thankful for Allie and Cat Scouts. Lisbeth is thankful for Charles. Astrid is thankful for Sampy.
  • Chris as she always brings us treats and nip and bonito flakes.
  • A home with a mom and dad who cater to all our needs and love us unconditionally.

Thanks giving with nip

This is Lily Olivia, Lisbeth and Astrid enjoying the latest catnip bounty from Chris. If you look closely, you’ll see it in their furs. Lily snorphled so much nip that she slept the remainder of the day!

As we give thanks for these things and so many others, we pray that all those kitties awaiting homes will soon be enjoying warmth, comfort and love in a forever home.

Sending you all our best wishes for a happy and blessed Thanksgiving.

STARK RAVING CAT CHRISTMAS GIVEAWAY

Nippy Goodness Can Be Yours!

Today we got to sample a holiday product from the new company, Stark Raving Cat. We received their Santa’s Rocking Stocking Catnip Joints. Mom teased us for a while before she opened the brown paper bag packaging. We could smell the nip right through the package. As you can see in one of Lisbeth’s photos, she was not to happy with mom for making her wait. (Raspberry!)

Stark Raving Cat Christmas

stark raving cat stockingThis limited edition stocking is designed for hanging on the Christmas tree or mantle. A red-and-white pair of catnip joints (topped with tiny Santa hats) peeks out from a traditional red stocking. From the ribbon on the front hangs a silver-tone cat-and-mouse charm. It’s perfect to add to your cat’s collar, a key chain or a necklace to wear it as a pendant.

It is evident from our photos that we liked this product. The nip is so potent it permeated the stocking and it’s hang tag. Mauricio wouldn’t let go of these items or stop licking the tag. Lily Olivia liked the easy-to-hold joints the best. We think this would be a great gift for all nip-loving kitties. Stark Raving Cat’s Santa’s Rocking Stocking Catnip Joints also would be a great present if you are participating in the Santa Kitty Toy Hop or Secret Paws.

Stark Raving Cat Maneki NekoStark Raving Cat has a huge variety of unique products, including one our mom is putting on her Christmas Wish List: Maneki Neko earrings and kitty collar with a Maneki Neko bell. She collects these lucky cats so cannot resist this product. We are wondering which of us will get the new collar.

CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATORS CALLED

A few days ago we received a package of goodies we’d won from Phoebe, Mom Ellen and the crew at 15AndMeowing. Mom opened it and checked out all the contents. Then she put everything back into the package and said we could have the items as soon as she could set up for some photos. All we can say now is, “What was she thinking?”

The following morning when the humans came downstairs to fix our breakfast they discovered this:

The Crime Scene

Scene of the Crime

Crime Scene

Criminal or Opportunist?

crime scene

The Real Perpetrators

That’s right! The flat Cat Scouts visiting us left their paw prints all over the crime scene. This gang of hooligans’ leader is none other than the one looking sideways in the right back. That’s Einstein The Mastermind from Tomcat Commentary by Tim. The other members of the gang include his brother Timmy (back left), Ali from Musings of a Senior Kitty (in front of Timmy) and Einstein’s main squeeze, Shoko from The Canadian Cats.

It’s totally our mom’s fault that this happened. Einstein does have a taste for the nip and is known to have a problem with impulse control. We say our Mom set him up by leaving that open package on the kitchen counter so that the aroma of nip could waft throughout the house.

As the perpetrators of the crime are all visitors to our house, they will not be reprimanded nor receive any punishment. That will be at the discretion of their humans when they return to their respective homes.

This case is now closed. And Kitties Blue thank our visitors for liberating our prezzies.

p.s. Mom is praying that flat Mauricio is on his best behavior while visiting his friends. He’s not all that well-behaved at home so she’s worried about what he might get up to when away. She’s hoping that his recent appointment as Chief of Security at Cat Scout University will convince him that he needs to set a good example for all Scouts.

NIPHEADS ANONYMOUS

We are nipheads, and we can’t deny it.

Don’t criticize us if you’ve never tried it.

It’s good to roll in and sweet to eat.

Nip is by far our favorite treat.

If we are being completely honest,

Maybe we should join Nipheads Anonymous.

No, on second thought, definitely not.

Give us nip and make it a lot.

We are nipheads and darn proud of it!

 nipheads

Whenever Chris comes to the house, whether to clean or look after us when the humans go away, she brings us goodies. It may be treats, catnip, bonito flakes or any combination of the three. Today we got fresh and ground nip and treats. Jackpot!

This is what we did in the morning. Astrid demonstrates what we did during the afternoon. Mom says she was really out of it. She was sleeping on a big pile of toys and let Chris vacuum and clean all around her. She didn’t even blink. Astrid only changed positions after Mom started taking photos. But she never woke up. Good nip!

We love nip, and we love Chris. We wish she would come everyday.

KITTY QUALITY CONTROL INSPECTORS

Catnip Toy Manufacturing

This is a companion post to “Nip Heads” published on August 17.

Friday was catnip-toy-manufacturing day at the House of Blue Cats. Barn Cat Buddies had an adoption event Saturday and needed toys to sell.

I had hoped to keep all the felines outside for the day, so I could work uninterrupted. But the weather wasn’t so great with rain early and then clouds for the remainder of the day.

Inspector #7 – Lisbeth

Lisbeth crashed among the catnip toys.

So, I had four inspectors on duty: Numbers 4 (Giulietta), 5 (Fiona), 6 (Astrid) and 7 (Lisbeth) for most of the day. Fortunately they used the tag-team method to inspect with no more than two on the job at a time. Lisbeth, did the Lion’s Share of the work until she passed out atop a pile of toys after over-indulging.

Mauricio, Inspector #2, showed up late in the day in time to scarf up the dregs of the catnip. After finishing it, he immediately threw up. SOP for Mauricio.

Round Two

Expecting to finish my project Friday evening, I retrieved my supplies after the kitties had eaten their dinner. My work, however, was cut short when Inspector #1, Lily Olivia, discovered my project. When I wouldn’t let her carry off the toys, she got belligerent and started hissing and growling.

Giulietta eyes the ribbons I had cut to secure the plastic bags.

I had to finish up the morning of the event with the help of Giulietta. Though she enjoyed the catnip part of the project, she ultimately was more interested in the ribbons I used to tie around each plastic bag containing a toy.

All toys earned a top rating for quality as evidenced by the cat saliva on the toys and bags as well as some teeth and claw holes in the bags. No toy received less than a four paws up!

Meeting a Dilute Tortie Cat

When I delivered the toys to the adoption event, I met so many beautiful kitties I would have loved to adopt. One in particular, Josette, a dilute tortoiseshell, was giving me the “please-adopt-me look.” I didn’t bring her home but neither did anyone else; though, another lady spent about an hour snuggling with her. I have shared some photos with Tom. He’s in Canada but returns home tomorrow. She may throw off our feng shui, but I am hoping he will let us adopt her. Watch future posts to see what happens.

UPDATE: As you know, that beautiful, dilute tortie joined the household and became Calista Josette (aka Calista Jo or C.J.).

p.s. Sorry for the poor quality of the photos.

FEEDING TIME AT THE BLUE ZOO

Feeding Kitties Blue

I previously mentioned our morning and evening feedings of stinky goodness and why it is served in the post, “Angels, Lisbeth and Astrid, Turn One.”

Five cats eating from white bowls: one white, one tuxie, two greys and one ginger tabby.

A typical feeding time scene. Lily Olivia and Misty May were on the countertops on either side of this group.

Morning feeding time normally occurs prior to 8:30 a.m. This morning, however, I didn’t serve the first meal of the day until after 9 a.m. Breakfast being served late usually causes an uproar as well as me being pushed and prodded to get out of bed and to my duties. Not so today. Misty May remained above my head on the pillow. Lily Olivia and Mauricio were curled up on either side of me.

Giulietta and Fiona rarely sleep on the bed but will pester me in the mornings to get up. They were no where in sight. Neither were Astrid or Lisbeth. When I went to bed, the former was asleep in a kitty bed in the sewing room. The latter was on a folding table in the laundry room.

Lily allowed the well-behaved Madison to share her counter space.

Lack of Urgency

When I made it to the kitchen, Lily Olivia took up her place on the counter next to the food bowls. She sat quietly at attention while I dished up her meal. Normally she has her head in the can, and I cannot get her food in a bowl without getting it on her head or the counter. Almost always, Lisbeth jumps up on the counter while Lily is waiting. Lily usually ignores her, as she did this a.m. Her sheer lack of urgency, however, was totally out of character.

Whenever we are away and a PlayTime Pet Sitting caregiver comes to feed, we always get notes about Lily Olivia. She’s the first one to arrive when it is time to eat. Her penchant for “helping out” while food is dished up is noted each day.

Opening any kind of can has always brought the kitties running, even before we began serving stinky goodness. In times past, when we ate tuna from a can instead of a pouch, kitties appeared out of nowhere when they heard the electric can opener. Sometimes they only found soup or veggies at the end of their quest. It was always better, however, to check out what was in the can than to miss out on a meaty treat. With tuna I would drain the water into small bowls for whichever of Kitties Blue showed up.

Can Opener on the Porch

When our first cat, Skooter, was young and would not respond to our pleadings to come into the house, we plugged in the electric can opener on the front porch where we ran it “sans can” to lure him. He would come, but unless we were really fast at grabbing him, he would sprint off again when his nose didn’t detect the aroma of any savory substance.

We still have an electric can opener but rarely find a use for it. Most cans, including cat food, now come with a pull-tab. I doubt that Astrid and Lisbeth have ever heard the can opener. I believe I may have to experiment with them and see if responding to its sound has now become instinctual in kitties.

Catnip Hangover

I suspect the reason for this morning’s scenario was due to hangovers from the catnip ingested last night by all but Misty May (who had already gone to bed). I had to bribe a few of them to come in off the back deck last night so I could go to bed. Bribery has always consisted of Pounce or some other brand of cat treats, but with all the catnip Chris has been bringing the kids, I have been using some when trying to prompt them to do my bidding.

White cat eating from bowl with grey kitten pushing her face into bowl.

Madison, always the gentleman, allowed a baby Giulietta to share his food. Giulietta now gets nosed out of her bowl by either Astrid or Lisbeth.

Lily Olivia returned to her pushy, insinuating self at dinnertime. Order restored at the zoo! And I made everyone stay in the house after they ate; though, I had to listen to Astrid bellyaching and watch her shred another newspaper. So…no treats or catnip for the troops tonight. I expect an early wake-up call tomorrow morning.

NIP HEADS

Catnip Gift

Yesterday, Chris, our house cleaner, local catnip pusher and Kitties Blue caregiver brought the kitties a large zip-loc bag of dried catnip. She also brought six fresh cut stems each about three feet tall with lots of seeds for me to plant in my garden.

Tom immediately put the bag away. We learned our lesson years ago with regard to leaving catnip unattended. A friend had given the kitties a small bag of dried catnip for Christmas. On the afternoon of Christmas Day we went to a movie.

The nip was on a small end table in the living room when we left. When we returned, what was left of it was scattered all over the cats and living room rug. Daphne was in a stupor atop a new Cat Claws scratching pad. The effects eventually wore off as did those demonstrated by Skooter and Steamer.

Sharing the Nip

Not wanting to spread the seeds from the nip Chris brought throughout the house, we left the branches on the front porch. Mauricio and Misty May, with noses twitching, quickly zeroed in on the prize. By the time they finished, most of the seeds were on the porch and the kids were ready for naps.

That evening before dinner, Dad Tom and I were sitting on the front porch when Lily Olivia came home. She quickly discovered the seeds and started rolling and snorting. She soon mellowed out (not a small feat for our bi-polar calico) and came to sit with me on the dual rocker.

As we were enjoying some time together, the neighbor’s marmalade, mackerel tabby snuck onto the porch. Sparky spends quite a bit of time here. He often appears when he hears the call for breakfast or dinner. He knows that if one of our bunch refuses a meal, he sometimes scores the rejected food.

To my surprise Lily didn’t budge from my side or even hiss. She watched contently as he too rolled in the seeds. Catnip can elicit drunk and disorderly conduct, but, to my relief, none was displayed by either cat. When Sparky had enough he meandered home. When he stood up I noticed the puddles of drool he left behind.

Who is the Biggest Nip Head?

Madison was our biggest Nip Head. I make small catnip pillows for Barn Cat Buddies to sell in order to raise money for their organization. Whenever I work on the project, I am fighting off cats the entire time. Madison would pester me unceasingly. He would dance around my feet, jump into my lap and put his paws on the sewing machine. I could only keep him at bay by continually sprinkling catnip on the floor until I finally would have to give him one of the newly-sewn toys.

Lily is the current catnip frenzy champion. Unbeknownst to me, she was in the house the last time I began this project. When I sew these little pillows closed, I don’t cut the thread between the toys but let them accumulate in a long string until I am finished sewing. When Lily discovered me at the sewing machine, I already had a fairly long string of completed pillows.

She was on the sewing table batting these around before I could respond to her presence. She tangled up the threads and persisted in trying to pull toys off. No matter what I tried, I could not get rid of her. She finally was able to bite through the threads and take off with a pillow in her mouth and several trailing behind. When I caught up to her, I was able to cut one of the toys loose so she could have it. She batted it around once or twice, lost interest and left. Of course, she did. She loves catnip, but she loves making me crazy even more.

Christmas Catnip

This wasn’t the first time Chris brought catnip to the hoard. She also gave them a welcome gift of freshly-cut catnip at Christmas. You can see their response in the photos.

nip heads catnip gifts: Tuxedo cat and kitten standing at kitchen sink, eating fresh catnip.

Mauricio (Me) and Lisbeth (Mini-Me) inspect the Christmas catnip.

Not too long ago, I read that kittens usually are not attracted to catnip. I guess Lisbeth and Astrid, only four-months old at that time, hadn’t had the opportunity to read that article.

nip heads catnip gifts: Calico cat standing on hind legs to reach catnip hanging overhead.

Lily Olivia isn’t going to let a long reach keep her from the Christmas catnip.

If I had remembered one of dad Tom’s and my DOs from 1993, I would have anticipated the interest and behavior of Kitties Blue. DO buy every cat “how to” book on the market and read them from cover to cover so that you can precisely predict how your cat won’t act in any given situation. (And, by the way, these selections are located in the fiction section.)

P. S. Fiona, who has just been on the deck obviously rolling around in some seeds, is now sprawled on the kitchen rug acting wonky and chewing on her toes!

P.P.S. I just found out that Mauricio Lima, Brazilian indoor volleyball player and our Mauricio’s namesake, is being inducted into the Volleyball Hall of Fame. Our Mauricio will have to clean up his act if he ever expects to be inducted into the Feline Hall of Fame!
