THE ADVENTURES OF PERIWINKLE & STINKY: PART CCLXVI

Periwinkle’s Arrival & a Plan

Stinky is always anxious to see Periwinkle and is pacing next to the teleportation tunnel when she arrives with the usual whoosh. Stinky catches her in his paws, and they spend several minutes whisker kissing and paw hugging.

“Wow, Stinky, your house looks so festive and ready for Christmas. I thought we might be able to help your mom do some decorating like we did for my mom last week. It looks, however, as if your mom is almost finished.”

“I had thought that would be fun, but then decided we should go to our cottage and decorate it for the holidays.” When Periwinkle hears that she begins bouncing from back paw to back paw and clapping her front paws together.

“Stinky, that is a wonderful idea, but do we have decorations?” asks Periwinkle.

“We do. Mom helped me order some things, and they were delivered to the cottage,” Stinky replies.

“Well then, let’s get a move on,” says Periwinkle, as she grabs Stinky’s paw and leads him back into their tunnel.

When they arrive at the cottage, Periwnkle and Stinky decide to start decorating in the living room. Before they can begin, they need to open all the boxes to see what they have and decide which rooms they want to put things in. Periwinkle cannot believe how many decorations they have from which to select, including hats and bows for themselves.

Two cartoon tabby cats, Periwinkle and Stinky, are dressed fancy hats and bows ifor Christmas.

“Stinky, you look adorable in that Christmas tree hat!” Stinky blushes, thinking he looks totally silly, but in the spirit of the holidays, he decides to wear it. He reciprocates by telling Periwinkle that she looks lovely and festive. Periwinkle giggles.

Decorating Their Cottage

The tabbies begin by putting up the tree. While Periwinkle decorates the tree and puts out some holiday pillows, Stinky hangs a wreath, garland and their stockings. Periwinkle adds a candle to the table. When finished, Periwinkle and Stinky stand back to check out the room. Pleased with the results, they give each other a big hug.

Periwinkle suggests they do the dining room next. They divide up the chores the same as they did in the living room, as Periwinkle knows Stinky enjoys every opportunity he gets to climb. She figures he can’t hurt himself too badly if he falls!

Periwinkle asks Stinky, “Are we going to invite our brofurs and sisfurs for a holiday dinner as we did for Thanksgiving?”

Stinky replies, “It’s an awful lot of work, but if you want to do it, we can. It would be on Christmas Eve. If you decide we should do it, give me at least a week’s notice.”

“Okay, I can do that,” Periwinkle responds. “I think it would be nice if they could see our decorations.”

After sitting and resting for several minutes to admire their work, Periwinkle suggests they move on to the kitchen. While they are working Stinky makes them some hot cocoa, which they enjoy once they have finished with the decor.

“Stinky, I think this is my favorite tree. I like that it is a bit rustic. And the snowman figurines are adorable.”

When they finish their cocoa, the tabbies move on to the bedroom. Before they get started, Periwinkle takes her hat off telling Stinky that it is too hot and too heavy. Stinky is totally happy to remove his as well.

Finished

With the decorating completed, Periwinkle and Stinky return to the kitchen for two more cups of cocoa. They take those to the living room where they sprawl on the couches to relax before the fire.

Periwinkle tells Stinky, “You did a great job selecting all these decorations. With so many to select from, we can do the rooms differently every Christmas.” Stinky tells Periwinkle he thinks that’s a great idea.

Soon it is time for the tabbies to return home. As Periwinkle decides to teleport directly back to her house, they spend time whisker kissing, paw hugging and congratulating each other on what a good job they have done decorating. Then Periwinkle enters the teleportation tunnel and with a wave, blown kiss and whoosh she is gone. Once the tunnel has stopped vibrating, Stinky enters and with a whoosh, he too is on his way home.

THE ADVENTURES OF PERIWINKLE & STINKY: PART CCLXIV

Thanksgiving Celebration

Stinky is, as usual, looking forward to Periwinkle’s arrival. He has asked her to meet him at their cottage and bring her fursibs, Reesie and Noelle with her. With Thanksgiving being just two days away, he thought hosting a Thanksgiving feast for both his and Periwinkle’s fursibs would be fun. He’s spent the last couple of days decorating shopping for and preparing all the noms.

Stinky is waiting by the teleportation tunnel when he hears the familiar whoosh and Periwinkle, Noelle and Reesie come tumbling out of the tunnel one after the other. While Reesie and Noelle spend a few minutes straightening their furs, Periwinkle and Stinky share some whisker kisses and paw hugs.

Periwinkle asks, “Stinky, why are we at our cottage and why did you ask me to bring Reesie and Noelle with me?”

Stinky replies, “We are here to celebrate Thanksgiving. All my fursibs should be arriving shortly. They have to break down into small groups to come. Our tunnel is not large enough to hold eight cats all at the same time.”

“Stinky, what a great idea to have everyone here for Thanksgiving. Now, I see why we have such a huge dining room! Is there anything you need me to do before the others arrive?”

Foodables

“Yes, you can come with me to the kitchen to check that all the noms are ready,” Stinky tells Periwinkle.

When she enters the kitchen, Periwinkle is astounded by all the food Stinky has ready. “Did you do this all yourself?” Periwinkle asks.

“I would like to say yes, but my mom helped me some.” Stinky continues, “Periwinkle do you think our brofurs and sisfurs will be disappointed we are having ham and not turkey? Since we help the turkeys with disguises every year, I didn’t think it would be right to serve one for dinner.”

“Oh, Stinky, I think you are right, and I am certain everyone will enjoy the ham.”

As Periwinkle and Stinky are leaving the kitchen to return to the dining room, they hear a lot of commotion coming from the living room. When they enter the room, they find the last of Stinky’s fursibs tumbling from the teleportation tunnel. Once all the cats have settled down, Stinky invites them to the dining room.

After everyone has taken a seat, Stinky suggests that before the food is served, each cat should tell something for which they are thankful.

Kitties Give Thanks

Lots of sighing, groaning and hissing can be heard from the other cats until Periwinkle speaks up, “Knock it off everybody. Stinky has gone all out to prepare a special Thanksgiving meal for all of us. The least we can do is each state something we are thankful for, and I will start. I am thankful that Stinky asked me to marry him. I wore my engagement collar today, which I love. Reesie, you are next.”

Reesie: “I am thankful my sisfur Noelle and I are becoming friends.”

Calista Jo: “I am thankful Mom didn’t make me wear that stupid sock collar today.”

Lisbeth: “I am thankful that Mom and Dad always let me lick any excess margarine off of their knives when they are finished using them.”

Sawyer: “Noelle and treats are the things for which I’m thankful.”

Kizmet: “I am thankful that all our mom’s friends like me and let me pester and crawl all over them.”

Audrey: “I am thankful that my dufus brofur Raleigh decided to come back in the house after spending 2 1/2 days wandering around our yard. I’m also thankful that I can get Kizmet to give me a bath whenever I want.”

Noelle: “I am thankful for Sawyer and for the best mom in the world; though, she won’t let me catch lizards and mail them to Sawyer.”

Cooper Murphy: “I am thankful I was rescued from a snowstorm almost eight years ago and have a great family.”

Raleigh: “I am really not thankful for much, but I guess I am thankful that the humans I live with let me come here today.”

Astrid: “I am thankful I always get a few morsels of whatever Mom and Dad are eating for dinner as long as it isn’t bad for me.”

Stinky: “I am thankful Periwinkle agreed to marry me, that we have this great cottage and that all of you could join us for Thanksgiving. Now let’s eat.”

Time to Eat

Stinky and Periwinkle hop down from their chairs and head to the kitchen for the noms. Once they have everything laid out on the dining room table, all conversations stop, as the kitties dig into the food. No one comes up for air until their plates are clean. A few cats, Audrey, Cooper Murphy and Astrid, ask for seconds. Once they have finished their second plate of food, Periwinkle and Stinky serve dessert.

Everyone gobbles up dessert, leaving nothing left for the following day. Stinky and Periwinkle send all the other felines to the living room while they clean up. When finished, they join their fursibs by the fireplace. Full tummies and warm furs send several into nap mode.

After the naps, it is time for everyone to head home. Stinky’s fursibs leave first, taking several trips to get them all home. Finally, Reesie and Noelle enter the tunnel and are gone in a whoosh.

As it is very late, Periwinkle and Stinky decide to stay overnight at the cottage and head to bed.

THE ADVENTURES OF PERIWINKLE & STINKY: PART CCLXII

World Animal Enrichment Day

Stinky is always nervous before Periwinkle arrives, as he worries she will think the adventure he’s planned is lame. He’s pacing in front of the teleportation tunnel when he hears the familiar whoosh and Periwinkle tumbles out into his waiting paws. After they share some whisker kisses and paw hugs, that expected question pops out: “Stinky, what have you planned for us today?”

Stinky hesitates and bounces from paw to paw. That makes Periwinkle scrunch up her face and stare at him. He finally says, “Today is World Animal Enrichment Day, so I thought we can share some ways to enrich a cat’s life and try some of those things ourselves.”

“That sounds like fun, Stinky. I had never heard of that day previously. Is it a new holiday?”

“Yes, fairly new and not just for cats. The first year it was celebrated was 2016. The holiday was established by UK-based Animal Behaviorist, Sarah-Jane White. It is always celebrated on November 12. On her web-site, RuffleSnuffle®, White says that she founded the day, ‘…to help raise awareness and encourage every owner and animal keeper to share their love and animal enrichment ideas for animals.’”

“Stinky, we are really lucky as we get to travel and have a new adventure every week. But what can pet parents do to enrich the lives of their pets?”

Cat-centric Stimulating Suggestions

Catio

“That’s a very good question, Periwinkle. In the case of Kitties Blue, we have our catio from where we can watch the birds and all types of other wildlife.”

“Stinky, I love your catio and wish I had one at my house,” replies Periwinkle.

Climbing & Scratching

“Cat parents also can supply places for their cats to scratch and climb, like cat trees and scratching posts.”

“We all know how much you enjoy climbing, Stinky. You are lucky, as you get lots of opportunities on many of our adventures…much to my dismay.”

Stinky blushes but doesn’t say anything.

Interactive Toys

“Providing interactive toys for one’s cats, can offer lots of stimulation and enrichment as well,” Stinky informs Periwinkle.

“Stinky, any toy can be interactive, if a cat’s human is on the other end as with wand toys or by throwing toys or balls for kitty to fetch.”

“That’s true, Periwinkle. My big brofur and now angel, Mau, loved to play fetch.”

Nip!

“Stinky, you know what else enriches our lives? Catnip! It can be fresh or dried or even added to toys. I remember when Astrid said we could share her nip. That was really generous of her.”

Treats & Treat Puzzles

“Periwinkle, we cannot forget my very favorite thing…TREATS! We have a few pudgy cats at our house, and they probably shouldn’t get too many treats, but I am not one of them. And treat puzzles can be very stimulating and challenging for any of us.”

“I recognize that treat puzzle,” exclaims Periwinkle. “Noelle sent it to Sawyer.”

“That’s the problem with having many fursibs. Everything has to be shared,” Stinky replies.

“Same at my house; though, there are just two of us,” says Periwinkle.

Strolling

Woman wearing purple with a grey cat in a purple stroller.“You know, Periwinkle, not all kitties are fortunate enough to have a catio, but getting outside can be very stimulating. Mom has a stroller and takes Kizmet out for walks. I know Sawyer and several others would freak out if she tried it with them. I do know some of Mom’s blogging friends also have strollers and some even have trained their cats to go outside with a harness and leash.”

Television

“Stinky, I just thought of something else that can be very stimulating, especially for felines who don’t have a catio or a way to go outside safely,” Periwinkle almost shouts.”Television! I know your sisfurs, Kizmet and Audrey, really enjoy watching sports on TV, but lots of programs exist just for cats, like the one Audrey and Kizmet are watching in this photo.

“Stinky, I just realized not all, but most of our suggestions would work for woofies as well,” exclaims Periwinkle.

Stinky praises Periwinkle for thinking about their doggy friends and then tells her, “According to Jones, enrichment helps us stay happy and healthy. It is especially helpful for animals in zoos, rescue centers and shelters. It makes them feel comfortable and less stressed and can help reduce their risks of health problems.”

“That means this would be a good day for people to visit shelters and play with the animals or donate some toys, treats or food. Periwinkle says.

THE ADVENTURES OF PERIWINKLE & STINKY: PART CCLX

Periwinkle Stinky Halloween: Two costumed cartoon tabby cats (a bat and a bee) on a Halloween Greeting card.

An Undisclosed Location

Stinky is waiting for Periwinkle for today’s adventure but not at his house. He sent her coordinates for the teleportation tunnel so she can meet him at the staging area for today’s adventure. He knows she is confused, as normally they would be returning to Walter and the black cats with their yearly delivery of supplies.

When Periwinkle arrives and looks around, she is completely confused. At first, she does not see Stinky but spies a huge helicopter with a pallet below it. As she walks closer, she sees the pallet is loaded with cat supplies, food, treats and litter. Standing speechless, she finally sees Stinky, who is coming toward her from behind all the boxes.

Stinky gives her a big hug and whisker kiss, and asks, “Well, what do you think?”

Supplies for Walter & the Black Cats

“I don’t know what to think. Are those the supplies for Walter and the black cats? And where the heck did you get a helicopter?” asks Periwinkle.

Stinky replies, “Yes, those are the supplies for Walter and the kitties. In the beginning, he had fewer cats and less need, and with the help of our Cat Scout brofurs, Raz and Mau, we were able to deliver in our red wagons. Eventually we had to get a truck and get my dad to help us deliver the supplies. But as Walter’s outreach program to save and give refuge to black cats has become more well known, the numbers of cats he cares for has really grown. Consequently, the number of supplies needed have continued to grow and grow. So, I had to pull in some favors to help us deliver this year.”

“Wow, Stinky, I never anticipated this would become such a huge project.”

“Neither did I, but I feel compelled to continue this service. I know Walter depends on us.”

“It looks as if you have everything loaded, so are we ready to head to Walter’s?”

On the Way to Walter’s

“Yes, let’s get on board so we can take off.” Periwinkle and Stinky sprint to the helicopter where the co-pilot helps them onboard. Once they are settled into their seats with seat belts fastened, the pilot takes off. Though the copter is not as fast as the teleportation tunnel, they arrive quickly at Walter’s. They see the black cats streaming from the house when they hear the noise from the helicopter.

After they touchdown and Periwinkle and Stinky get down onto the ground, they are surrounded by all the cats, who are purring and meowing and bouncing from paw to paw as they gawk at all the supplies and helicopter. Walter works his way through the other cats and gathers up Periwinkle and Stinky in a huge embrace. “This is incredible. I cannot believe that you continue to help us every year with our growing needs. And your method of delivery this year is astounding. Do you think the pilot will let us come on board and check out the copter?” asks Walter.

“You can count on it, Walter. The helicopter isn’t just here to deliver your supplies, but it is also here to deliver you and all the kitties to a special Halloween Party I have planned just for you,” says Stinky.

When Periwinkle hears this, she squeals and claps her paws together. She grabs Stinky and gives him a huge whisker kiss. “Stinky, this is so cool. Are we going to have the party on board the helicopter?”

Heading to the Halloween Party

Stinky tells her, “no” and that their destination is a surprise. Just then, the pilot and co-pilot let Stinky and Periwinkle know it is time to get onboard. They gather up Walter and all his charges and help them get into the helicopter and get buckled into their seats before they do the same for themselves.

The pilot takes off. There is a cacophony of excited chatter, meowing and purring among all the kitties.

After a short trip, the pilot begins to set down the copter in a large open field. When Periwinkle looks out the window, she is surprised to see their cottage and yard just a short distance away. “Stinky, are we having the party at our cottage?”

“We are. It seemed like the purrfect place to me.”

Stinky and Periwinkle help all the cats out of the helicopter and lead them to their backyard, which Stinky has decorated.

Party Time

Periwinkle starts bouncing from back paw to back paw and clapping her front paws together. “Stinky, this looks incredible. Maybe we need to get you a job as a party planner.”

Stinky blushes and giggles.

Game Time

Stinky tells all the cats that he has planned a couple of traditional Halloween games for them to play: Bobbing for Apples and Pin the Tale on the Mousie.

Periwinkle Stinky Halloween: Black cartoon cats bobbing for apples.Periwinkle Stinky Halloween: Black cats playing pin the tail on the mousie.

The cats are not certain what the bobbing for apples is all about, and some even end up in the tub of water. Periwinkle has her doubts about the mousie game and asks Stinky, “Where did you purchase that game? The mice look the same as the cats. It is just plain weird.” Stinky tells her it was some sort of games-for-cats on-line store. Periwinkle blows a huge raspberry and tells him not to shop there in the future.

Once the black cats finish playing their games, Periwinkle and Stinky help dry off those who ended up falling into the water barrel.

Trick-or-Treating

When everyone is dry, Stinky asks the kitties to gather in front of the cottage. He gives each a plastic pumpkin container.

Stinky leads the kitties through the neighborhood where they collect lots of treats from Stinky and Periwinkle’s neighbors. When they get back to the cottage, everyone is complaining about sore paws. Periwinkle leads them to the living room to relax before their trip home.

When they enter the living room, they find someone has left a huge cake on the table. Stinky knows everyone is full from eating candy, but they all agree they must have a piece, as it is one of Cooper Murphy’s special cakes. After cake and a short nap, Stinky and Periwinkle gather everyone together and lead them back to the helicopter.

Day’s End

Before boarding each cat gives Periwinkle and then Sawyer a paw hug. Sawyer counts noses as they board to make certain no one gets left behind.

As the helicopter takes off, all the kitties wave good-bye from the windows.

Periwinkle and Stinky walk back to the cottage paw-in-paw. When they get there, they realize they are totally exhausted and do not have the energy to clean-up. They each call their mom to tell her they are going to spend the night and clean up in the morning before returning home the next day.

They head to the bedroom and crawl under the covers.

THE ADVENTURES OF PERIWINKLE & STINKY: PART CCLVIII

Stinky is anxious for Periwinkle’s arrival, and is waiting by the teleportation tunnel when he hears the familiar whoosh from the tunnel. He catches Periwinkle as she comes tumbling out into his waiting paws. After some giggling, paw hugging and whisker kissing, Stinky leads Periwinkle into the kitchen.

Stinky has supplies laid out on the island and hands Periwinkle her apron and chef’s hat. As she is putting the items on, she asks Stinky about their plan for the day.

“Well, tomorrow in National Feral Cat Day, so we are going to tell our readers about that.

Something for Stinky’s Mom

Before we do that, however, I thought we could do something nice for my mom,” Stinky tells Periwinkle.

“That’s a great idea. How is she feeling?”

“Well, better than she was. She was crying a lot and spouting HBO words a couple days ago, but she’s mostly stopped that now. I think she’s in a lot of pain. And she hasn’t gotten much sleep.”

“That doesn’t sound like much fun. I did bring her some flowers to cheer her up.”

“Periwinkle, those are adorable. She’ll love them!”

“What are we baking for Mom Janet?”

Stinky tells Periwinkle they are going to try their paws at making lemon bars, as that is one of his mom’s favorite desserts. He tells her that Cooper has agreed to help, but only if they need it.

The tabbies get busy creating their lemon bars and do their best not to infuse them with too much fur. When the bars are finished and in the oven, Stinky tells Periwinkle that they can do their PSA about National Feral Cat Day.

National Feral Cat Day

feral cat day badge

“Stinky, what can you tell me about National Feral Cat Day?” asks Periwinkle.

Stinky tells Periwinkle that National Feral Cat Day was established by Alley Cat Allies in 2001. At the time, municipalities and humane societies confined and euthanized 70 percent of all cats brought to their facilities as well as virtually 100 percent of community cats.

According to The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, of the cats entering shelters today, approximately 37 percent are adopted and 41 percent are euthanized. That’s a significant improvement. Less than 5 percent of cats who enter as strays are returned to their owners.

The creation of National Feral Cat Day in 2001 was meant as a call to action to raise awareness about feral cats (aka community or stray cats), promote Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR), and prompt those compassionate individuals in the U.S. who care about cats and kittens to promote change on their behalf.

Each year on October 16, cat advocates, animal groups, veterinarians and shelters are encouraged to host activities or events to help all felines.

In the past 23 years, thousands of activities and events have been held to protect and improve the lives of millions of community cats. Some past activities have included spay-a-thons, TNR initiatives, vaccination clinics, educational outreach programs, building outdoor cat shelters, passing local TNR ordinances and handing out community cat information.

Formerly Feral Kitties Blue

“Stinky, I know that your alter ego, Sawyer, was a feral cat as were Audrey and Raleigh. Did your mom and dad adopt any other feral cats?” asks Periwinkle.

Periwinkle Stinky feral cats: Three feral cats in a collage.

“Many of the Kitties Blue were stray or community cats that just showed up at our house. The three of us were truly feral cats, however. Audrey has socialized very well. Raleigh and I are still working at it. As you know, Raleigh, doesn’t trust Mom at all.”

“Stinky, do you have some additional information we can share with our readers?“

“You bet, Periwinkle. Here are two terrific web-sites where our readers can find more information: Alley Cat Allies  and National Today.

Treat Time

“Stinky, my nose tells me that our lemon bars are just about baked. Let’s go check the kitchen timer,” suggests Periwinkle.

When the tabbies arrive back in the kitchen, the oven timer is blaring, and the aroma is one of lemony goodness. Stinky gets the bars out of the oven and sets the pan on the counter to cool. While that happens, Periwinkle takes the opportunity to visit with Stinky’s fursibs. When the lemon bars are cooled and sliced, Stinky calls Periwinkle in from the catio.

Periwinkle Stinky feral cats: Two cartoon tabby cats in chef's outfits with a plate of lemon bars and a bouquet of pink and purple flowers and white flowers shaped like a cat.

Periwinkle picks up the bouquet and Stinky the lemon bars to take to his mom. Mom Janet is totally surprised by the flowers and lemon bars. She gives the tabbies huge hugs and thanks them numerous times.

After spending time with Stinky’s mom, Periwinkle and Stinky return to the kitchen for their own snack. Finally, it is time for Periwinkle to head home. The tabbies head to the teleportation tunnel where they spend several minutes whisker kissing and paw hugging. Periwinkle enters the tunnel and with a blown kiss and whoosh, she is gone.

THE ADVENTURES OF PERIWINKLE & STINKY: PART CCLVI

Waiting for Periwinkle & Her Arrival

After being cooped up in the house for days and days due to the constant rain, Stinky is anxious to start on his adventure with Periwinkle. He paces next to the teleportation tunnel until he sees it begin to vibrate. He quickly runs to the opening just in time to catch Periwinkle as she comes tumbling out with the familiar whoosh. Once she regains her balance, the two tabbies spend several minutes paw hugging and whisker kissing.

Before Periwinkle can speak, Stinky ushers her back into the tunnel for a very quick trip across the state to Virginia Beach.

Neptune Festival – Virginia Beach, VA

When they exit the tunnel, Periwinkle is surprised to see the ocean and wonders if they have traveled back to Florida. Before she can ask, Stinky explains that they are at the Neptune Festival for its 50th anniversary celebration. He tells Periwinkle a bit about the festival before leading her to a building. “The festival is meant to promote family, community and togetherness; create a positive economic impact for Virginia Beach and showcase the city.

“The first Neptune Festival in 1974 attracted about 50,000 visitors. Today, the festival consists of 40 events. It has become one of the Country’s Top 100 Festivals as well as Top 10 on the East Coast.

“The signature Boardwalk Weekend draws more than 400,000 visitors, some even coming from other countries. The festival, which spans 33 blocks, includes free concerts, a parade, wine tastings, athletic events, including an 8K run, and the premier event, the International Sand Sculpting Championship.”

International Sand Sculpting Championship

“We are here to try our paw at sculpting sand. It is all we have time to do in one day, and what I think will be the most fun.”

“Ooh, look at all the sand. It’s making me feel like I need to pee,” exclaims Periwinkle.

Stinky giggles but advises Periwinkle against tinkling in the sand. She tells him she was just joking and asks about their plan. Stinky explains that his mom helped him decide on a theme for their sculpture and draw up some plans, which he shows Periwinkle.

Stinky’s Plan

When Periwinkle sees the design, she is skeptical. “Did you and your mom actually draw this? We cannot possibly create anything that looks this complicated or good.”

Stinky begins to pout. “I have to admit, Mom and I had some help from A.I. creating this. It turned out great, don’t you think? I realize, however, that without hands our creation might not look exactly like this.”

“Well, I have been known to make some pretty fancy art work in the litter box with just my paws and claws, and I bet you have too,” Periwinkle tells Stinky.

“That’s true, but if our sculpture doesn’t turn out purrfectly, it’s okay. We are here to have fun. I don’t expect to win a prize.”

“There are prizes? You didn’t tell me that. What can we win?” asks Periwinkle.

“For starters, we are not official participants. There are 32 of those from 15 different countries. To be selected to compete, one must have competed and placed in well-known and respected International competitions,” Stinky informs Periwinkle. “The total amount of prize money is $58,000. That’s the largest in the country. Prizes are broken down into categories. They include Neptune’s Choice, Sculptors’ Choice, People’s Choice, and overall winners. Are you going to help me sculpt, even if we can’t win a prize?”

“Of course, I am going to help; though, I am pretty sure I can’t match that drawing,” says Periwinkle.

Time to Sculpt

Stinky gives Periwinkle an hug and reminds her they are doing this for the fun of it. Periwinkle takes a few minutes to pull herself together, and the two head to their pile of sand. Before they can even start working, Periwinkle sees that Stinky has climbed up the sand pile. Knowing he probably cannot hurt himself too badly, Periwinkle doesn’t say anything. She just gets to work with the hope he’ll climb down and join her.

When Stinky realizes Periwinkle is not going to chastise him, he climbs down and begins the laborious task of moving the sand around to where they will need it. The tabbies sculpt for hours without a break. Finally, Periwinkle sits back and asks Stinky if they can take some time off for a snack and maybe even a quick nap. Stinky agrees that is a very good idea, and the two head outside to find some food. With 225 food vendors, the options are endless.

Once Periwinkle and Stinky decide what they want and get their food, they find a place to sit and eat. When they have finished their meal, they take a quick 15 minute cat nap, then head back inside to finish their sculpture.

Back to Work

“This sand is getting really heavy, Stinky,” Periwinkle complains.

“Well, we have 28,125 pounds of sand to work with. Normally, 900,000 pounds of sand will be used by the 32 contestants. The organizers added an additional portion for us,” Stinky informs Periwinkle.

“Yikes, no wonder by back hurts and my paws are raw,” Periwinkle responds.

“But we are almost finished. I know we can do this, Periwinkle.

“Okay, let me see that sketch one last time. We definitely didn’t follow it exactly, but you know this actually doesn’t look too bad. But I really am ready to fall over.”

Stinky gives Periwinkle a back rub and massages her paws, as she leans against him. Periwinkle takes several deep breaths and then the two get back to work. Before too much longer, they decide they are finished and step back to admire their creation.

Momma Cat and Her Kittens

“Wow, Stinky, I cannot believe we did this,” exclaims Periwinkle.

“It is pretty terrific. I hope visitors to the festival enjoy seeing it. We could probably win a prize if we could have qualified as contestants.”

Periwinkle gives Stinky a huge hug. “I think so too! I’m proud of us for sticking with it. But I really am exhausted.”

“Me too. Guess we should head back to my house,” Stinky replies. The tabbies head toward the teleportation tunnel, enter and set the coordinates for Stinky’s house.

Back Home

When Periwinkle and Stinky arrive at his house, they share a photo of their sculpture with his mom, dad and fursibs. Everyone is amazed at what they accomplished and congratulate them on their achievement. Then they all gather in the kitchen for a snack before it’s time for Periwinkle to go back home. She and Stinky head to the teleportation tunnel paw-in-paw. After several minutes of whisker kissing and paw hugging, Periwinkle enters the tunnel. With a wave, blown kiss and whoosh, she is gone.

Stinky heads to his parent’s bedroom where he falls asleep and dreams of Periwinkle.

THE ADVENTURES OF PERIWINKLE & STINKY: PART CCLIV

Periwinkle’s Arrival

Stinky is anxious for Periwinkle’s arrival, as he has planned what he thinks will be a super fun day. Trying to make up for not taking her anywhere for the past two adventures, he wants to make certain she has a good time. He paces by the teleportation tunnel until he sees it vibrate. He quickly runs to the exit as Periwinkle comes tumbling out into his waiting paws. They spend their usual few minutes whisker kissing and paw hugging.

Finally Periwinkle asks the inevitable question, “What do you have planned for today? Have you done more renovations on our cottage?”

Stinky replies, “I don’t have anything to show you at the cottage, and I believe I have planned a super fun adventure, but we need to make a quick local stop before we leave for it.”

Periwinkle gives him a quizzical look as he takes her paw and leads her back into the tunnel. Moments later they arrive at their first destination.

Wasena Park

“Stinky, I recognize where we are. What are we going to do at the park?”

“Today is not only a special day, but also a special week. I wanted to be able to recognize both of those, and so I got a special permit from the city to put up two billboards in the park.”

“Now, I am really curious. Are you going to show them to me?”

“Of course, but first close your eyes. I will lead you to both,” advises Stinky.

A Birthday Surprise

“Okay, you can open your eyes,” Stinky tells Periwinkle.

“Oh my, Stinky, that is amazing. No wonder you didn’t have time to work at the cottage. Do you think Mau and Misty May can see that at the Rainbow Bridge?”

“Definitely. I think they can see everything that happens with their families.”

“That is so cool. I did get a message from my sisfur, Angel Allie, that she has planned a huge party for Mau and Misty May at the Rainbow Bridge. You know, so many of their fursibs, friends and Mau and Allie’s fellow Cat Scouts are there, I bet it will be a big bash.”

“I am certain you’re right, Periwinkle. Now, close you eyes again, and I will lead you to the second billboard.”

Adopt a Less Adoptable Pet Week

“My goodness, Stinky, this is wonderful. I sure hope lots and lots of people see this, and go to a shelter and adopt a new friend. Since you are a special needs cat, it is great that you are promoting this.”

“Since this is next to one of the most traveled areas of the Roanoke Greenway, I think it will get lots of views. And, I included cats and dogs on my billboard, as those are the main pets living with our readers. But the type of pet is not limited to felines and canines. It could be a horse or a ferret, pig, fish, rabbit or bird or any pet that needs special care and attention. And, here’s a couple of websites our readers might want to check out.”

“Stinky, you are a very thoughtful cat, and I am so proud of you, especially as you did not climb to the top of either billboard.” Stinky blushes and doesn’t reply, but he does give Periwinkle’s paw a squeeze.

“So, Periwinkle, are you ready for today’s adventure,” asks Stinky.

“Of course, are you going to tell me what it is?”

“Nope…just come with me.” Stinky takes Periwinkle’s paw and once again leads her into the teleportation tunnel. Several minutes later they arrive at their destination.

Klagenfurt am Wörthersee, Austria

When they leave the teleportation tunnel, both tabbies look around and try to get their bearings. Periwinkle asks Stinky where they are. He replies, “We are at the 27th edition of the World Bodypainting Festival in Austria. It is the locale for the World Championships for bodypainting and makeup artists. They also will spotlight photography and videography. The main theme for the event is The Power of Symbols.”

“Wow, I didn’t even know such a thing existed,” Periwinkle responds.

Stinky explains that a variety of opportunities exist for visitors to learn about bodypainting, make-up and special effects. At the conclusion of the festival an awards ceremony is held to celebrate the new world champions!

“Unfortunately, we are only here for the day, so we won’t be able to attend the awards ceremony,” Stinky explains. He continues, “There is so much to this event that I could never tell our readers everything about it. I suggest they check out the info sheets on the World Bodypainting Festival website.

“So what are we going to be doing while we are here?” asks Periwinkle.

“Being well-known and popular tabby cats, as you and I are, I was able to ask for a special favor from the organizers. They have set up a room just for us where we can explore bodypainting all on our own.”

Periwinkle gives Stinky a quizzical look and asks, “What exactly does that mean.”

“Follow me, and I will show you,” Stinky says, as he takes Periwinkle’s paw.

Tabby Cat Bodypainting

Moments later, Periwinkle and Stinky enter an all-white room.

“Okay, Stinky, now what? I sure hope we are not going to paint this room! No…wait, I know. We are going to get some supermodels to paint,” exclaims Periwinkle.

“Well, not quite,” replies Stinky.

“Okay, what are we going to do?”

Stinky replies softly, “We are going to paint each other.”

“You are kidding, right? Are we going to shave our furs off?” asks Periwinkle.

Stinky giggles. “No, of course not. We will use water soluble paints, so we can easily wash our furs. Unlike real cats, we don’t mind getting wet.”

“I’m not sure about this, but we are here so let’s do it,” Periwinkle replies.

Stinky gets the paints and the tabbies begin painting each other, giggling most of the time. They only get a little in their eyes and on the floor and walls.

“Periwinkle, you look really cute. I think we did pretty well with the theme, ‘The Power of Symbols.'”

“We sure made a mess, though. Do you think we’ll get in trouble?” asks Periwinkle.

“No, the person who set this up for us will wash down the room.”

Just then Periwinkle notices what Stinky has painted on the wall. Stinky, you are so sweet and such a romantic. Wait, did you misspell my name and have to add that first i after you finished?”

“Well…maybe. I had paint in my eyes when I did it.”

Periwinkle giggles and gives Stinky a huge hug smearing their paints all together. After turning their furs into a muddy conglomeration of paint, the two head to a designated washing-off point and get cleaned up before heading home. Finally clean and dry, the tabbies head to the teleportation tunnel.

Home Again

When the tabbies arrive at Stinky’s house, the other Kitties Blue are waiting for them, so they can all celebrate Mau and Misty May’s birthday. Cooper Murphy has baked a cake and there is lemonade.

Everyone digs in, especially Periwinkle and Stinky. After such a long day, they are super hungry. As they eat, they tell the others about their adventure.

Unfortunately, the time comes for Periwinkle to head home. She and Stinky share whisker kisses and paw hugs as they pick pieces of dried paint out of each other’s furs. Then with a wave, blown kiss and whoosh from the tunnel, Periwinkle is gone. Stinky heads to the catio for a nice long nap and dreams of Periwinkle.

THE ADVENTURES OF PERIWINKLE & STINKY: PART CCLII

Periwinkle’s Arrival

Stinky is waiting impatiently for Periwinkle’s arrival. Sunday was her and her alter-ego, Noelle’s, birthday, and he missed acknowledging it due to his mom’s poor memory. He’s thankful the adventure he’s planned for today is purrfect for celebrating.

When the teleportation tunnel begins to vibrate, Stinky sprints to the opening and is ready to catch Periwinkle when she comes tumbling out. The two begin giggling, then paw hugging and whisker kissing.

When they come up for air, Periwinkle asks the inevitable question. “What’s the plan for today, Stinky?”

“I have a bit of a surprise for you,” he says as he takes Periwinkle’s paw and leads her back into the tunnel.

Garden & Gazebo

When they arrive at their destination in a gorgeous garden with a gazebo, Periwinkle has no idea where they are. She comments and asks, “What a beautiful and tranquil place this is. Where are we?”

“We are in our very own backyard,” replies Stinky.

“Oh my cat, I had no idea this was behind our cottage,” Periwinkle exclaims.

“Well, it wasn’t quite this nice, and the gazebo wasn’t here when we celebrated our engagement two weeks ago. Cooper Murphy, our dad and I have been working almost around the clock to have this ready for today. The only time I really took off is when we visited the alligators last week and when I had my seizure,” explains Stinky.

Birthday Celebration

Periwinkle throws her paws around Stinky’s neck and gives him a huge kiss. “Stinky, our little cottage just gets better and better. I love it so much. Thank you. And we are celebrating my birthday too. I love that and you! And I love how you put periwinkles everywhere!”

Stinky blushes and tells Periwinkle, “Tomorrow is National Eat an Extra Dessert Day, which I thought we could celebrate a couple days early. Cooper Murphy made you a special birthday cake just right for four servings, two each.”

Black and white cake iced to look like a gift with purple and silver and black bow with a tag with a heart, which reads "Happy Birthday Periwinkle."

Periwinkle claps her paws in delight. “My cake is lovely, and we should be able to have two desserts everyday!”

Stinky nods his head in agreement, as he cuts them each a slice of cake. Periwinkle pours them each some iced tea, and they dig in. Both have been taught not to talk with their mouths full, so it becomes quiet while they eat, except for birdsong coming from the trees. After they finish their first pieces of cake, Periwinkle asks, “Have you done any additional work on the cottage?”

Stinky replies, “Yes, with the help of my mom. Would you like to see?”

“What do you think?” asks Periwinkle.

Stinky rolls his eyes, but Periwinkle doesn’t see. He takes her paw and leads her in to the cottage.

Cottage Dining Room

When they get inside, Stinky tells Periwinkle to close her eyes, and he leads her to the dining room. Periwinkle opens her eyes. She squeals when she sees the room but then looks confused. “Stinky, why do we have such a huge dining room with so many chairs?”

Two cartoon tabby cats in a rustic cottage dining room.

“Mom and I thought you and I would like to have gatherings to which we could invite all our fursibs. With 11 of them, it meant we had to go big.”

“Okay, that makes sense,” replies Periwinkle as she begins to check out the room. “And there are even more periwinkles.”

Stinky says, “I am sure you will want to add some personal touches to the room, and I hope you will.”

Periwinkle smiles and tells Stinky she is looking forward to doing some decorating once all the renovations are completed.

Wedding Plans?

With the tour of the dining room complete, the tabbies return to the gazebo for their second piece of cake. When they have finished eating, Periwinkle asks, “When do you think all the cottage renovations will be complete and we can move in?”

“I don’t really know about either,” Stinky tells her. “I am pretty certain our moms would prefer we wait until we are married to move in.”

“When are we going to do that?”

“I haven’t really thought that far ahead. I think we should ask our moms for their suggestions. You know they are going to want to do most of the planning just like they did when Mau and Allie got married.”

“That’s a good idea, Stinky. I’ll talk to my mom as soon as I get home.”

“Okay, I’ll do the same and talk to my mom. Is there anything else you would like to do while we are here?” asks Stinky.

“Can we explore the rest of the garden?” Periwinkle asks.

“Of course,” Stinky says as he takes her paw.

Garden Tour

Two cartoon tabby cats in a beautiful garden. One has climbed a large tree.

“Wow, Stinky, our garden is bigger than our entire cottage. It is so peaceful and gorgeous,” Periwinkle says and then realizes she is talking to herself. She looks around and assumes Stinky is hiding among the flowers until she hears a giggle from above her. She looks up and sees Stinky in the tree. “I should have known you would find someplace to climb. You probably bought this cottage just because of this tree. Please come down.”

Stinky climbs down from the tree and puts his arm around Periwinkle. Apologetically, he says “You know I am going to climb things. It’s in my blood. I will get a first aid kit for the cottage just in case I get any boo-boos. And I did not buy the cottage because of this tree. I bought it because it is a beautiful place where we can spend the rest of our lives together.”

After that confession, Periwinkle knows she cannot be mad at him. They stroll through the gardens a bit longer, return to the gazebo for some treats Stinky has stashed there. As the sun is beginning to set, the tabbies decide it is probably time to head home. Stinky promises Periwinkle he will take her on a real adventure in two weeks. She hugs him and says, “Everyday I am with you is an adventure, as I never know what trouble you might get into.”

Stinky decides it is better not to reply. He walks Periwinkle to the teleportation tunnel and tells her she can use it to get home to her house, as he has another stored in the cottage. Periwinkle thanks Stinky for the party, and they spend several minutes paw hugging and whisker kissing. With a final wave and blown kiss, Periwinkle enters the tunnel and is gone with a whoosh.

Stinky returns to the cottage, sets the coordinates on the spare tunnel and heads home.

THE ADVENTURES OF PERIWINKLE & STINKY: PART CCXLVI

An Iffy Plan

Stinky is the most anxious he has been for any adventure he’s ever planned. In fact, he’s not even certain this adventure is going to happen. Today, his brofur, Mau, and Periwinkle’s sisfur, Allie, will celebrate their eighth wedding anniversary, and he’s planned a party. There might be one little problem, however. He’s planned to have it at the Rainbow Bridge as both Mau and Allie have been angels for four years.

Sawyer tried getting day passes for Mau and Allie and all their friends, but he was told that many cats could not leave the Bridge together. So, he sent a purr-mail to the very first Kitties Blue, Skooter. Skooter helped bring him home when he took his walkabout, so Stinky was pretty certain he would help if he could. Stinky asked if Skooter could send coordinates for the RB, so he could load them into the teleportation tunnel’s GPS. Skooter wasn’t too certain about how to obtain those, but after asking several of the cats who had been at the Bridge for a very long time, he cobbled together some numbers he hoped would work and purr-mailed them to Stinky.

Periwinkle’s Arrival

Stinky had filled in Mom Sharon and Periwinkle about his plans in case something should go awry. He wanted Periwinkle to be able to opt out if Mom Sharon thought the trip would be too dangerous. But both she and Periwinkle decided the trip was worth a try. So, Stinky is waiting by the teleportation tunnel when, with a whoosh, Periwinkle comes tumbling out. They share some paw hugs and whisker kisses before either speaks. Finally, Periwinkle says, “I must admit, Stinky, I am a bit nervous about today’s adventure. We have never tried anything like this.”

Stinky admits that he’s also nervous, but he thinks they need to try to make the trip. He then shows Periwinkle the items they will be taking with them. She tells him everything looks purrfect before Stinky runs off to tell his mom and dad they are leaving.

Stinky returns and shoves their provisions into the teleportation tunnel, and he and Periwinkle enter paw-in-paw.  He sets the coordinates Skooter has sent.

At the Rainbow Bridge

Moments later, the tabbies are ejected from the tunnel with a loud whoosh. Both Periwinkle and Stinky have their eyes closed and are nervous about opening them. When they do, they are amazed and delighted to see they are among the clouds beneath a beautiful rainbow.

“Wow, Stinky, I think we did it,” exclaims Periwinkle.

Stinky looks around and sees two cats coming toward them. He is relieved to see Skooter and one of his angel sisfurs, Lily Olivia. The four share paw hugs and nose boops before anyone speaks. Finally, Skooter tells the tabbies how happy he is to see them. He and Lily show them a sign they have made, and the four get busy hanging it.

When they finish, Periwinkle claps her paws together and gushes, “Oh, this is purrfect. I can hardly wait for Allie and Mau to see it. And I am so excited to see and celebrate with them.”

Skooter tells Periwinkle and Stinky that with so many Cat Scouts at the Bridge, Mau and Allie have many friends, which made it impossible to invite them all. But he knows more than 20 of their angel friends will be joining the celebration. He also assures them that Allie and Mau have no clue about it.

Skooter and Lily Olivia go off to round up the guests. While they wait, Periwinkle and Stinky bounce around among the clouds, being careful not to fall through. Without wings, it’s a very long fall to Earth.

“Stinky, it is so beautiful here, don’t you think? I miss my friends and fursibs who are angels, but this looks like a pretty nice place to live.”

“I agree, but I am not ready to join them anytime soon. You and I have oodles more adventures in front of us,” replies Stinky.

“Oh, I wasn’t suggesting I am ready to be an angel, just that it makes me feel a bit better about all our family and friends waiting here.”

Party Time

Suddenly the tabbies hear a lot of commotion and meowing. When they look around they are surrounded by cats all clamoring to say, “hello.” They greet them all individually: Misty May, Nellie, Fiona and Giulietta, Ellie, NylaBlue, Tamir,  Raz, Cousin Trooper, Gracie, Bailey Boat Cat, Sammy K. and Sammy P., Phoebe, Charles, Cathy Keisha, Timmy Tomcat, Ernie, Loulou, Brian and Little Binky. Periwinkle & Stinky are delighted by the turn-out, especially as Allie’s Maid of Honor, Gracie, and Mau’s Best Man and Groomsman, Sammy K. and Charles, are there.

While Lily Olivia goes off to find Allie and Mau, all the others hide behind clouds until they arrive. As soon as they see the two celebrants, all the guests jump out and yell, “Surprise!”

Anniversary Rainbow Bridge: Clouds and a rainbow with two cartoon tabby cats, 25 real cats, a cake and bottle of champagne and two glasses.

“Oh, Mau, look at this, a party for our anniversary. I cannot believe it. Stinky and Periwinkle, did you plan this?” asks Allie.

Both of the tabbies blush and nod their heads.

“It is simply grand. We never got to celebrate enough anniversaries before being called to the Bridge,” exclaims Mau. “We have lots of parties here with our friends, but this is absolutely unexpected and incredible. Thank you so much.”

A Card from Home

“We have a card from Dad Tom, Mom Sharon, Mom Janet and all your fursibs at home,” Periwinkle tells Allie and Mau, as she hands it to them.

Anniversary Rainbow Bridge: Eighth anniversary card with a photo of two cats on their wedding day.

The card brings Allie to tears, and she and Mau swear to cherish it always.

Stinky tells everyone they have cake and champagne to enjoy while they visit, and Periwinkle begins passing it around. While they eat, the tabbies share news from home. Though the felines know what is happening with their own families, as they watch over them 24/7, they are interested in hearing what is happening with their friends. And they also want to hear about some of Periwinkle and Stinky’s recent adventures.

It is a joyous occasion that too soon comes to an end. With tears in their eyes, all the kitties spend lots of time paw hugging and saying their good-byes. All the angels tell Periwinkle and Stinky to be good cats and ask them to tell their families and friends how much they love and miss them.

Finally, it is time for Periwinkle and Stinky to head home. They share final paw hugs with Allie and Mau and then enter the teleportation tunnel paw-in-paw.

Back on Earth

In barely the blink of an eye, the tabbies are back at Stinky’s house where they tell Dad Tom, Mom Janet and all the Kitties Blue about the celebration. After a quick snack, it is time for Periwinkle to head home, so she can share with Mom Sharon, Reesie and Noelle all about Stinky’s and her day at the Rainbow Bridge. After several minutes of paw hugging and whisker kissing Periwinkle enters the teleportation tunnel and with a wave, blown kiss and a whoosh, she is gone.

Stinky heads to the bedroom for a nap and dreams about Periwinkle and their wonderful adventure.
