Thoroughly Poetic Thursday

As we do each Thursday, we are joining Teddy and Angel Sammy’s Thoroughly Poetic Thursday. Mom Pam posted a really cool photo last week for inspiration. I had been looking forward to writing that poem, but that was not to be. I have written a poem to and for Lily Olivia.

One of a Kind

I don’t know how to say good-bye.
I thought you were invincible; though,
You used up many of your nine lives.
You ruled us all with an iron paw;
Never took “no” for an answer
And always got your way.
If not, you’d bark to signal your
Displeasure and sometimes raise a paw.
I always joked that you were bi-polar.
When I told people you were a calico
They immediately understood what I meant.
Today was unnaturally quiet in the house.
Can a home seem empty with eight cats?
I will miss waking up at night to find you
Sitting next to me and staring at me.
I will miss you yelling at us as you did
When you wanted breakfast and dinner.
I will miss watching you lounging and snoozing
On the porch settee on a warm afternoon.
But most of all I will miss your kisses!
When kitten Sawyer befriended you,
We suspect you were imparting your
Wisdom and secrets for controlling us.
Time will tell if he was a good listener.
But whatever he may have learned,
Neither Sawyer nor any other cat
Can or will replace you in our hearts.
Lily Olivia, you were one-of-a-kind.

Thankful Thursday

It is beyond difficult to be thankful today. Losing Lily Olivia is not a good start to the new year. I am, however, thankful to have had her in our lives for nearly nineteen years. And I am grateful to everyone who has left comments on our “Saying Good-bye” post as well as on the Cat Scouts and Crotchety Cougars websites and Tom’s Facebook page and sent e-mail messages and texts of condolences. Thank you. I will do my best to thank each of you personally during the next few weeks.

As a tribute to Lily Olivia, I am sharing a few photos from the afternoon of New Year’s Day. These are the last photos taken of her. I apologize for the quality. Lily was enjoying her last sunpuddle, and Sawyer was soaking in all those secrets she was sharing.

Janet, this poem is beautiful. What a heartfelt tribute to Lily-Olivia. She sounds like she and Delilah were a lot alike. Deli barks and yells at us too 🙂 I’m sorry for the pain and loss. Please know that we are thinking of and praying for you and Tom and family. Sending lots of love. Sampy sends all of his love to Astrid too, and a kiss for every snowflake that has fallen so far this year.

WOW. Just … WOW. That’s an incredible poem and tribute to Lily Olivia. The hardest part is the silence and emptiness we find at the times and places we’re used to seeing our Rainbow Bridge fur-baby. Each one is so full of personality – so unique – so beautiful. It’s not fair that we can’t have them for a lifetime. But it’s also true that we kind of do – our love for them and theirs for us – transforms us and stays with us forever. We’re better cat Moms … more loving … and in that way, their lives never truly end – even when the feeling of a hole in our lives is unbearable.

Oh what a lovely poem. It is really good that Sawyer absorbed all those impawtant lessons before Lily Olivia had to go on her last journey. She looks all soft and warm in her sunpuddle, and how nice that she made a furiend of the New Kid. Somewhere she is gently purring her thanks for the wonderful life she had with you. XOXOXOX

Another beautiful poem Janet. I agree with the other commenter who said you should put this poem in your sidebar. I heard about your loss yesterday and I’m still sad about it for you and your household. I can’t even imagine what it must be like for you. Lily Olivia will never be forgotten.

Glad you have the two new youngsters in your life to make your heart smile — even if it’s only a little bit. {{{{{big bear hugs}}}}}

What a lovely poem, and those photos of young Sawyer and Lily Olivia are too precious for words. Sending you thoughts & prayers of comfort and healing.

Pam and Teddy January 4, 2018 at 5:29 am

Our hearts are broken too that Lily Olivia has received her wings but what a mark she made on the Blue household in her long life…..each cat is so very unique – they have such distinct personalities and once we “get” that and “get” them, we realize the one thing they have in common is the ability to get into our hearts FOREVER. Lily Olivia is certainly permanently “there”. We know how hard it is adjusting to not having her there but it’s just so heart-warming seeing little Sawyer who obviously just KNEW the Queen of the household was about to say farewell…….and she has. We send you hugs and absolutely LOVE your poem – I hope you add this to your sidebar.

Love, Pam and Teddy too

Oh what lovely pictures, and fine words in deed, and worthy of one so brave and bold and so loving and alive. A home without a life, even just one of the many, is not whole for that life had space. I hopes that Sawyer will live up to lily Olivia’s teachings.

Interestingly, I just came from the Friends Furever blog, where I found out that this tree was a memorial for someone. And it – and your poem – both fit in perfectly. I can imagine how quiet your home must be. My human’s soul cat was a calico, like Lily Olivia, and they are very special cats to begin with, and exceptional beings to the humans they live with. My human thinks about her cat, Harlot, every day, even though she’s been gone for 16 years (longer now than she was was alive), and I know Lily Olivia will always have a special place in your heart.
