THE ADVENTURES OF PERIWINKLE & STINKY: PART XXV

I scheduled this post, but forgot to change the time to 12:01 a.m. Stinky is pretty ticked off at me.

Visiting North Carolina Waterfalls

Stinky was having trouble deciding what he and Periwinkle could do for their weekly adventure. Even though they didn’t need to practice social distancing, they did need to find someplace to visit that wasn’t locked down.

Asking his dad for advice, his dad suggested they visit some waterfalls he had visited on photo excursions. Manx cats are supposed to like water, but Stinky wasn’t too certain about the truth of that. And he was pretty sure that Periwinkle wouldn’t like to get wet. But with nothing else coming to mind, he decided they would do that. Stinky had his mom pack a picnic lunch while he waited by the teleportation tunnel for Periwinkle to arrive.

As soon as he heard that familiar whoosh, Stinky spread his arms to give Periwinkle a huge hug when she emerged.

As he wrapped his paws around her, Periwinkle reciprocated and gave him a whisker kiss on each cheek as well.

“So what are we doing today, Stinky,” Periwinkle asked.

“We are going to jump back in the tunnel, and I will set the coordinates for our destination,” Stinky replied.

Periwinkle wanted to know where they were going, but Stinky told her it was a surprise.

Within minutes they arrived near their first destination,  Stinky told Periwinkle to close her eyes before she left the tunnel. When she opened them again, she let out a huge gasp. When she calmed, Periwinkle exclaimed, “Oh Stinky, this is so gorgeous. Where are we?”

“This is Looking Glass Falls in the Pisgah National Forest in North Carolina,” replied Stinky.

“It looks just like real gold,” said, Periwinkle. She then asked, “Is it?”

“No, it is just the sunlight reflecting off the rocks.” said Srinky.

The tabbies then sat in silence for a longtime admiring the beauty before them. Then they hopped back into their tunnel and were gone in a flash. When they arrived at their next destination, Stinky made Periwinkle close her eyes again as he led her from the tunnel.

“We are now in the Nantahala National Forest, northwest of Highlands, North Carolina. And this is Bridal Veil Falls. It is 45-feet tall,” said Stinky. He continued, “The roadway where we are standing goes behind the falls. It is the only waterfall in the state  a person can drive a vehicle under.”

“Can we walk under the falls?” Periwinkle asked.

Taking her paw, Stinky said, “yes,” and led her beneath the falls. He gave her a whisker kiss while there.

Again they admired the falls for a while before heading back to their tunnel and taking off for their next destination. On arrival Stinky followed the same procedure of having Periwinkle close her eyes.

Periwinkle squealed when she saw where they were and grabbed Stinky’s paw. She could barely speak, but asked, “How far is it to the bottom?”

“Well, we are at the top of  Upper Whitewater Falls. It falls 411 feet to the lower falls. This is the highest waterfall east of the Rockies. We are a total of 811 feet from the bottom of the falls and still in the Nantahala National Forest,”
“Stinky, this is totally breathtaking, but I think I am getting a tad lightheaded. Can we sit down for a little while and just listen to the water falling and crashing?”
“Of course,” replied Stinky.
After about 30 minutes, Stinky told Periwinkle that it was time to return to their tunnel. She asked if they were heading back to his house, Stinky just shook his head no.

When they exited their tunnel again, Stinky told Periwinkle, “This is Skinny Dip Falls. The waterfall is in three levels and about 30 feet high. There’s a small swimming hole at the bottom. There also is a 0.9 mile trail, which is used for hiking, walking, nature trips and bird watching,” Stinky told Periwinkle. “This is our last stop. We will have our picnic here,” said Stinky.

After eating the tabbies had a short nap. When they awoke, Periwinkle asked, “So, are we going skinny dipping now?”

Stinky was so shocked by Periwinkle’s question that he was unable to respond.

When Periwinkle saw the surprised expression on Stinky’s face, she yelled, “April Fools!”

Stinky let out a big sigh of relief and reminded Periwinkle that April Fools Day isn’t until tomorrow. And Periwinkle reminded him that they would not be together tomorrow. Stinky couldn’t argue with her logic, and gave her a big smile and hug. Then he took her paw as they entered their tunnel for the trip back to his house.

After a brief visit with Stinky’s parents and fursibs, Periwinkle headed back to the tunnel for the trip home. She and Stinky shared a huge paw hug and many whisker kisses. Then with a whoosh and flash the beautiful young tabby was gone, and Stinky was left to miss her and wish that next week would hurry and arrive.
