Groundhog Day
Stinky is pacing and worrying, as he usually does when waiting for Periwinkle. He is always fearful that she will not enjoy their adventure.
Once again he has asked her to bring her heavy coat and boots. With about five inches of snow on the ground and another outside adventure planned, Stinky wants to make certain his girl friend does not get cold or worse yet get frost bite.
As Stinky continues to worry, Periwinkle comes tumbling out of the teleportation tunnel with the familiar whoosh. She’s already dressed in her coat and boots and tells Stinky it started getting cold during the trip.
After the usual hugging, snuggling and whispering, Periwinkle asks, “ What’s on the agenda for today, Stinky? I am guessing it is going to be another cold one.”
“Yes, but we won’t be traveling, just going outside in the yard. Stinky tells Periwinkle, ”As it is the 135th Groundhog Day, I thought about traveling to Gobbler’s Knob in Pennsylvania to meet Punxsutawney Phil and watch him check for his shadow. But then I realized we have our own groundhogs right here in our yard. So I sent a note to Wasena Wally, and he agreed to come out of his burrow and look for his shadow.”
Giggling, Periwinkle says, “Oh, Stinky, that groundhog has the silliest name.”
Stinky takes Periwinkle’s paw and explains, as they head outside, that Wally got his name due to his living in Stinky’s yard, which is on Wasena Avenue and in the Wasena neighborhood.
Periwinkle asks Stinky if he knows where to find Wally. He sheepishly tells her, “No!” So they begin searching the yard.
Where’s Wally?
They begin in the backyard but don’t find Wally under the Camellia bush. Stinky didn’t expect him to be there. That’s where the chipmunks have their burrows. Periwinkle notices something pretty in the yard and asks Stinky about it.
“That’s one of my mom’s glass flowers that she made. There is another one over near Mau’s grave, and she has given bunches of them away,” Stinky tells her.
The next stop is near one of the yard’s birdbaths.
“He doesn’t seem to be here either, Stinky! Where should we look next?”
“Let’s check the front yard.”
“Not here, Periwinkle. Guess we can move on to the side yard.”
“I recognize this. It’s Mau’s bench,” says Periwinkle. She sees a tear slide down Stinky’s face and wipes it away.
Stinky sniffles, thanks Periwinkle and tells her how much all of his family miss Mau. Periwinkle gives him a giant paw hug.
Periwinkle Spots Wally
As they continue to move around the yard, they are not having much luck finding Wally, when suddenly Periwinkle sees just the top of his head peeking out from the ground. She grabs Stinky’s paw and points, squealing, “There he is!”
The tabbies call out to Wally, “Hi Wally, do you see your shadow? Are we going to have six more weeks of winter?”
“Hi Stinky and Periwinkle…no shadow here,” says, Wally. “I’m going back to my burrow.”
“Periwinkle, do you know what that means? We are going to have an early spring! Yippee. Maybe we won’t have to have too many more cold adventures.”
“That would be great, Stinky. Speaking of cold, I am really ready to head back inside and warm up,” Periwinkle tells Stinky.
“Good idea, Periwinkle. Let’s go.” Stinky takes Periwinkle’s paw and leads her back into the house. There they find that Stinky’s mom has set out a snack for them. After enjoying some Temptations and Fancy Feast, the tabbies curl up for a short nap. Holding paws, they quickly nod off.
When they wake up, Stinky and Periwinkle spend some time playing with Stinky’s new sisfur, Kizmet.
Finally it is time for Periwinkle to head back home. The tabbies say their good-byes and share lots of whisker kisses. They wave to each other as Periwinkle enters her tunnel. In an instant she is gone, and Stinky begins dreaming about next Tuesday when he will see his girl friend again.
