THE ADVENTURES OF PERIWINKLE & STINKY PART XXXIII

A Day on the River

Stinky, as usual, was anxiously awaiting the arrival of Periwinkle. Tuesday is always his favorite day of the week. Not only would he have a great adventure, but he would be sharing it with his girlfriend. He’d be happy just to sit on the front porch, hold paws, eat Temptations and drink lemonade, but he had something thrilling planned for today.

Soon he heard the familiar whoosh, and Periwinkle came tumbling from the teleportation tunnel. Stinky gave her a big hug. Then he handed her a life vest. Periwinkle gave him a quizzical look. She knew Manx kitties were supposed to like water, but it definitely wasn’t one of her favorite things. As Stinky was helping her into her vest, he said,”Don’t worry, we are not getting into any water, but we are going to have an adventure on the water!”

Periwinkle was in no way reassured by his statement, but she trusted Stinky and gave him a wan smile and thumbs up sign.

[Disclaimer: Neither Stinky, Periwinkle nor their parents recommend you take an adventure like the one they will have today. It would be dangerous and fool-hardy. Remember, this is a virtual adventure and no animals were harmed or got wet.]

Stinky took Periwinkle’s paw, called for his dad and started walking down the street. As they walked he explained that his dad would be helping them with their adventure, but he didn’t tell Periwinkle where they were headed. Just two blocks later they arrived at their destination. Periwinkle could not believe her eyes. She’d never seen so much water that wasn’t in the ocean.

They had arrived at the flooded Roanoke River. Before Periwinkle knew it, she and Stinky were in a kayak tied to another kayak manned by Stinky’s dad. And they were off on their adventure.

“Stinky, this is sort of scary but really fun,” said Periwinkle, as they floated along. She continued, “And it is really nice of your dad to do all the paddling and tow us behind him.”

“Wow, Stinky, this bridge is really high,” said Periwinkle. “I cannot believe the water is right up to the bottom,” she added.

“Hey, Stinky, look, ducks!”exclaimed Periwinkle.”

“Yeah, Mom and Dad told me lots of ducks and geese hang out at the river. This is the first time I have ever seen them,” replied Stinky. He continued, “Periwinkle, Dad said he would tie our kayak to those trees up ahead if we’d like to climb one. What do you say?”

“Sure, as long as we don’t get wet,” said Periwinkle.

“If we are careful and don’t fall out of the tree, we should be okay,” Stinky told her.

After climbing down into the kayak, untying from the tree and giving Dad Tom the rope, Stinky told Periwinkle they would be ending their adventure now and heading back to his house right after they did one more thing.

“What is it?” asked Periwinkle. Stinky just shook his head and wouldn’t tell her, but took her paw and lead her to a grassy spot.

Periwinkle squealed when she saw the ducks, and they walked right up to her. When she turned around she saw Dad Tom walk up with Temptations in his hand. He asked, “Periwinkle would you like to feed the ducks? I have it on good authority that they like Temptations as much as you do.”

“Oh yes, please, Mr. Tom,” she replied.

After feeding the ducks, and themselves, the tabbies and Dad Tom walked back to Stinky’s house. After some lunch and a visit with Stinky’s mom and his fursibs, it was time for Periwinkle to head home.

As usual, Periwinkle and Stinky spent several minutes hugging, sharing whisker kisses and some giggles. Then Periwinkle entered her tunnel. With a tear in her eye, she gave Stinky a final wave and was gone.

The End
