THE ADVENTURES OF PERIWINKLE & STINKY: PART XLII

Visiting Mau

As Stinky waits for Periwinkle to arrive, he worries she will be disappointed with their adventure. His mom isn’t letting them do anything strenuous because of the extreme heat and his recent seizures.

Hearing that familiar whosh, Stinky opens his arms and waits for Periwinkle to fly in for a big hug. She does, and they hug for a long time.

“We have a tame adventure today, Periwinkle. I sure hope I won’t let you down,” says Stinky.

“I am happy as long as we are together,” she replies.

Stinky takes Periwinkle’s paw and leads her to a bench in the garden.

“This is a beautiful place. Are we going to do something special here?” Periwinkle asks.

“We are going to sit quietly and think about my brofur, Mau, and enjoy the yard he loved so much. That little metal tuxie cat marks his grave.”

Periwinkle gathers Stinky into her arms for another big hug. “I know how much you all loved your brofur, as did my sisfur Allie, and my whole family,” says Periwinkle as she comforts Stinky.“This is a nice spot just to relax. It’s too bad you cannot come here whenever you want.”

“I know, but we can see everything through the window anytime.”

“All the Kitties Blue except Fiona and Lily Olivia are buried in our yard and two Doggies Blue as well,” Stinky tells Periwinkle.

“Did you know them all?” Periwinkle asks.

“No, just Mau and Lily Olivia. She was very old and went to the Bridge shortly after I came to live here, but she told me all about the other Kitties Blue. She knew all of them personally, except one, Twinkle.”

“That’s pretty cool, Stinky. How many have there been?”

“I am number 19,“ replies Stinky.

“Wow, that’s a lot of kitties. Do you know all their names?”

Stinky counts on his toe beans as he recites their names, “Skooter, Steamer, Daphne, Thelma, Louise, Chloe, Twinkle, Lily Olivia, Madison, MacKenzie and Fiona. They are all the angels along with Mau.”

Remembering Mau

“Do you think the whole gang was there to meet Mau at the Bridge?“ Periwinkle asks.

“I sure hope so! Do you want to visit all the other spots where my brofurs and sisfurs are buried?” Stinky asks.

Periwinkle declines and tells Stinky they can do that another time. She wants to stay where they are and memorize every sight and sound to tell Allie when she gets home.

While sitting quietly near Mau, Periwinkle hears a tinkling sound. She sees a blue bottle hanging from a dogwood tree and asks Stinky about it. Stinky tells her that it is a wind chime and was a gift from Teddy, Angel Sammy and Mom Pam in remembrance of Mauricio.

Periwinkle wipes tears from her eyes, takes Stinky’s paw again and replies, “Oh, what a beautiful and thoughtful gift. Every time you hear it, you will know that Mau is thinking of all of you. Do you know what is engraved on it?”

Stinky recites to her from memory, “’May you hear the patter of my paws through the sound of the wind.’”

“That is so special. My mom said there was a really nice memorial for Mau at Cat Scouts,” remarks Periwinkle.

“Yep, Cooper Murphy told me all about it,” says Stinky.

“Cat Scouts are so nice and helpful, and everyone loved Mau. Do you remember how he helped us deliver noms and treats on Halloweenie to the Black Kitties House and when he taught us how to bake pies for Thanksgiving at the Bake Shop?”

“Of course, I do. He definitely was an exemplary Scout and amazing big brofur. Cooper said he shared at Scouts some of the stories and songs Mau wrote. I have memorized a few. Would you like to hear one.”

“Oh yes,” replies Periwinkle.

“Most things he wrote are pretty long, so I will share one of the shorter poems,” says Stinky and starts to recite:

Kitten Season

When spring appears we give a cheer.
It is our favorite time of year.
As kitties, our thoughts turn to romance.
We’ll try to sneak out if given a chance.
That’s why it’s important to spay and neuter,
So we don’t end up with an ardent suitor,
Add more kittens that cannot find homes
And may be forced the neighborhood to roam.
Please, oh please, be a responsible pet parent
And don’t subject unwanted kittens to a death warrant.

“That is such a great poem, Stinky, with an important message. Your brofur was wise and talented.”

After sitting in silence for a long time and remembering Mau, Stinky invites Periwinkle to have a snack and nap on the catio.
When they finish, Stinky and Periwinkle walk paw-in-paw to the teleportation tunnel where they share lots of hugs and whisker kisses. With final whispers to each other, Periwinkle enters the tunnel for her trip home and with a whosh is gone. Stinky is already anticipating their next adventure.
