THE ADVENTURES OF PERIWINKLE & STINKY PART VII

Preparing for Thanksgiving

Stinky had moved the teleportation tunnel to the destination of Periwinkle’s and his next adventure and waited next to it. Of course, he was fidgeting with excitement and anticipation when she came whooshing out. Breathless, she threw her paws around Stinky’s neck and gave him a big squeeze.

Looking around, Periwinkle asked, “Where are we? This isn’t your house.”

Stinky replied, “We are at the locale of today’s adventure,” and he pointed at a sign above their heads.

Periwinkle read it aloud, “Cat Scout Mau’s Bake Shop.”

“I thought all the yummy smells would give it away,” said Stinky.

Periwinkle started bouncing up and down and said, “Oh, goody, we are going to spend the day eating delicious things.”

“Well, not quite,” replied Stinky. Seeing the pout on Periwinkle’s face he quickly continued, “Scout Mau is going to teach us to make pies for our humans for Thanksgiving.”

“Do we at least get samples?” asked Periwinkle.

“Of course,” replied Stinky, as he led her inside.

“Hi kids,” Mau said, as Periwinkle and Stinky entered the Bake Shop. “I’ve made you some bacon tarts so you will have plenty of energy for today’s activities. When you have finished those, make sure to wash your paws really well, and we will get started.”

As Periwinkle and Stinky ate their tarts, Mau explained, “We are going to be baking pecan and pumpkin pies today, and I will share the recipes.

Mau gave the youngsters time to eat their tarts while he gathered all the supplies for their pies.

When Periwinkle and Stinky were finished eating and their paws were clean, Mau gave them each a chef’s hat.

Mau assigned pumpkin pies to Periwinkle and pecan to Stinky, but the two asked if they could work together on both. They were so cute, Mau readily said, “Yes!”

Here is the pumpkin pie recipe Mau gave them.

Pumpkin Pie from Mau’s Great Grandmother

Piecrust: Mau’s mom uses the Pillsbury refrigerated piecrusts as she stinks at making a good flakey one, so that is what Periwinkle and Stinky will be using.

Filling:

1 15 oz. can of pumpkin
1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. pumpkin pie spice
3 slightly beaten eggs
1 cup canned evaporated milk

Combine pumpkin, sugar, salt and spices. Add eggs and milk. Pour into unbaked pie shell and bake at 425 degrees for 40 to 45 minutes until knife inserted in center comes out clean.

Serve with unsweetened whipped cream. (Not the canned stuff.)

In the midst of mixing up the pumpkin pie filling, Periwinkle started giggling, as she noticed Stinky had managed to get pumpkin on his face. She offered to lick it off for him, and he readily agreed. “Hmmm, that sure is yummy,” said Periwinkle.

After getting the pumpkin pies in the oven, Stinky and Periwinkle couldn’t resist watching them for several minutes before starting on the pecan pies.

“Wow, Periwinkle, these sure smell pumpkinlicious, don’t you think?” “Oh, yes,” replied Periwinkle.

“Stinky are you and Periwinkle ready to start on the pecan pies?” asked Mau.

They replied in unison, “You bet!”

Southern Pecan Pie

Again, Mau gave the tabbies a premade Pillsbury refrigerated crust.

Filling:

3 thoroughly beaten eggs
2/3 cup sugar
Dash salt
1 cup dark corn syrup
1/3 cup melted butter
1 cup (or more) pecan halves (Mau always adds lots more, as he likes the pecans to be throughout the pie, not just on top.)

Pour filling into unbaked pie shell and bake at 350 degrees for 50 minutes or until knife inserted in the center comes out clean.

Once the pecan pie was in the oven, Mau asked Stinky to clean up the kitchen so he could give Periwinkle a tour of the Bake Shop. This, however, was a ruse on Mau’s part. Instead he took Periwinkle to another part of the bake shop where he had an already baked cake waiting. He asked her if she would like to help decorate it for Stinky’s Gotcha Day, which was yesterday.

“Of course,” Periwinkle replied, and Mau gave her the supplies she would need.

When the pies were out of the oven and cooling, Periwinkle presented Stinky with his cake. He was totally surprised and gave Periwinkle a big hug and thanked both her and Mau for such a thoughtful gesture.

The three sat down and enjoyed cake and ice cream.

When they finished their celebration snack, the tabbies admired their pies.

Mau wrapped up the pies for Periwinkle to take home to her mom and fursibs. (Mau would make two more the following day for Stinky’s and his family.)

The tabbies thanked Mau for inviting them to the Bake Shop and teaching them how to make pies. They turned in their chef’s hats and headed toward the teleportation tunnel.

Stinky gave Periwinkle a big hug and several whisker kisses and said, “Thanks for sharing another adventure with me. I am so thankful to have you in my life. Please wish your family a happy Thanksgiving from me and my family.”

Periwinkle reciprocated with hugs and whisker kisses, and wished Stinky and his family a happy Thanksgiving.

The two youngsters held paws for a while longer, not wanting to say good-bye. Finally Periwinkle gave Stinky a wink and a wave, picked up her pies and entered the teleportation tunnel and was whisked away.

Stinky stood by the tunnel for several minutes wiping tears from his eyes. He was already missing Periwinkle and couldn’t wait for their next adventure.
