THE ADVENTURES OF PERIWINKLE & STINKY: PART L

Another Virtual Adventure

Stinky pulls the teleportation tunnel close to the radiator. It is the first day of autumn and much colder in Virginia than in Florida. He does not want Periwinkle to get a chill when she arrives.

He gets the tunnel positioned just in time for Periwinkle to come tumbling out with that familiar whoosh. Stinky throws his arms around her and gives Periwinkle a gigantic hug. Periwinkle nuzzles his neck and gives him whisker kisses before asking what their plans are for the day.

Stinky responds, “I was searching the internet to see if I could find any special events being celebrated today in addition to it being the first day of fall.”

“Did you find anything fun?” asks Periwinkle.

“I did, but when I told my mom what I wanted to do, she said we would have to take another virtual trip.”

Periwinkle looks disappointed but tells Stinky that anything is okay with her as long as they are together. Stinky agrees and sets out the plan for Periwinkle. As soon as he finishes, they clasp paws, close their eyes, meld their minds and are off on their next adventure.

When the tabbies reopen their eyes, they gasp in unison, and Periwinkle exclaims, “Wow, that guy is almost as huge as that dinosaur we rode in our last virtual adventure. She asks, “Is that why your mom wanted us to pretend again today?”

“Yes, when I told her it is National Elephant Appreciation Day today and asked if we could visit one, she immediately shook her head, no, especially after I told her what I wanted to do.”

Periwinkle gives Stinky a quizzical look as she waits for him to explain.

“Today is National Ice Cream Cone Day as well. As you and I already visited Pop’s for banana splits in a previous adventure, I wanted to figure out a different way to celebrate both ice cream cones and elephants.”

Periwinkle narrows her eyes and gives Stinky another “look” and awaits further explanation.

Do Elephants Eat Ice Cream Cones?

Stinky continues, “I was wondering if elephants eat ice cream cones, so I went back to the internet. And I discovered they do.”

Looking at Stinky as if maybe he has gone off the rails, Periwinkle asks, “So you want to feed this elephant ice cream cones?”

“Yep,” Stinky says enthusiastically, as his eyes light up in anticipation.

“Well, I can see why your mom was hesitant about this adventure. If this was a real elephant, he could squish us when we try to get close enough to give him the ice cream, especially if he’s an elephant who doesn’t have access to the internet or know he likes ice cream.”

Stinky giggles at Periwinkle’s reasoning.

Realizing this is a virtual adventure, and they can do whatever they want, Periwinkle says, “Well, let’s close our eyes and imagine some ice cream cones.”

After a few moments, the tabbies open their eyes and find ice cream cones in their paws. Stinky takes a lick and discovers he can’t taste anything. He realizes he forgot to imagine a flavor. He asks Periwinkle what her ice cream tastes like. She replies, “Tuna, catnip and Temptations.” Periwinkle shrugs and says, “I couldn’t decide what I wanted,” and she offers Stinky a lick.

The tuna ice cream is so yummy, as are the other flavors, and the tabbies finish all the ice cream before realizing what they have done. Embarrassed, they giggle, and Periwinkle asks Stinky what flavors of ice cream they should imagine.

Stinky tells Periwinkle that elephants eat mostly grasses, shrubs and tree bark, but they also like vegetables and fruits, especially apples and bananas. They agree that Stinky will imagine a cone with apple-flavored ice cream and Periwinkle banana.

When they open their eyes after a few seconds, they taste the cones in their paws. They agree the flavors are just right.

“Let’s see if the elephant likes these,” suggests Periwinkle.

The tabbies offer up their cones, and their new friend quickly grabs one after the other with his trunk. He doesn’t lick the ice cream but puts the cone and all into his mouth.

Periwinkle whispers to Stinky, “I think he does like ice cream; he’s smiling!”

Stinky agrees and suggests they imagine some additional ice cream cones for themselves. They agree to get different flavors and share. Stinky imagines a cone with salmon-flavored ice cream, and Periwinkle imagines chicken.

As the tabbies lick their ice cream, their new friend offers them a ride on his trunk. This being an adventure in their imaginations, Periwinkle and Stinky think that sounds like a dandy idea. The elephant lowers his trunk and they both jump on.

After a nice long ride, the elephant sets Periwinkle and Stinky carefully on the ground. They thank him for the ride, and he thanks them for the ice cream cones. The tabbies join paws and imagine themselves back at Stinky’s house, and their adventure ends as magically as it began.

Periwinkle takes some time to say, “hi,” to all of Stinky’s fursibs as well as his Mom and Dad. Then Mom Janet prepares a snack for the tabbies. After that and a short nap, it is time for Periwinkle to leave for home. She and Stinky spend several minutes saying their good-byes. After a long hug and several whisker kisses, Periwinkle enters the tunnel. With a wave of her paw, she is gone.

Stinky heads to the catio where he can nap and dream of Periwinkle, wishing next Tuesday comes quickly.
