Stinky is more excied than usual for Periwinkle’s arrival, as they are going to spend the entire day outside. Stinky’s dad gave him a great suggestion for an adventure, and he is hoping Periwinkle will enjoy it. While Stinky paces and worries, he hears the familiar whoosh of the teleportation tunnel. Periwinkle comes tumbling out, and Stinky grabs her in a huge paw hug. While still hugging, Periwinkle gives Stinky a big whisker kiss and asks, “What’s the plan for today, handsome?”
Leaf Peeping
Stinky outlines the adventure for Periwinkle.
Stinky, “Don’t you think that leaf peeping is the funniest term? I wonder who came up with it?” Periwinkle asks.
“I was curious about that too, so I checked Google,” Stinky tells Periwinkle. “It seems to be a term unique to America and Canada. The phrase appears to have evolved from “leaf-peeker,” originating in Vermont around the 1900s.”
“I always think it’s nice when we learn something on our adventures. Thanks, Stinky.”
Stinky takes Periwinkle’s paw and tells her, “Let’s get going. We’re burning daylight.” They jump into the teleportation tunnel and are off…first stop Jennings Creek in Arcadia, VA.
“Wow, Stinky, this is beautiful. It would be a great place for a picnic in the spring.”
“That’s a great idea, Periwinkle. Maybe we can invite Tyebe and Cooper Murphy to join us again. I think they had fun the last time we adventured together.”
“Oh, Stinky, look at the sun coming through the trees. It’s so beautiful. I feel like Allie and Mau, Giulietta and all our fursibs we didn’t know are looking down and watching over us!”
“I bet you’re right, Periwinkle. Makes me feel really loved and protected.”
“Me too,” says, Periwinkle and gives Stinky a big paw hug.
“My dad told me of a spot where there are some really pretty trees. Want to go see?”
Oh, yes please, lead the way,” says Periwinkle.
“Oh, my gosh, Stinky, these are really gorgeous. I don’t see anything like this at home.”
Stinky asks Periwinkle if she’d liked to climb up one of the trees so they can see more at one time, and she agrees.
“Stinky, I don’t think you should climb so high. If you have a seizure and fall out of that tree, I would never forgive myself. And your mom and dad would probably never allow us to have another adventure.”
Stinky climbs down to where Periwinkle is sitting and apologizes. They both climb down to the ground, and Stinky apologizes again and thanks Periwinkle for looking out for him. He knows he tends to be impulsive and how much trouble that got him into during the summer.
A Fun Discovery
The tabbies pop back into the teleportation tunnel to travel to the next locale Stinky wants to share. On the way, Stinky notices something interesting, so he takes Periwinkle’s paw and they pop from the tunnel to check it out.
“Stinky this is so cool. It’s definitely been here a very long time. I wonder who abandoned it and why?”
“Maybe we can figure it out if we inspect the old truck.”
The tabbies look around and then climb up on the truck, but as a result they only succeed in getting rust on their paws. They find no clues to who left the truck to decay, so decide to jump back into their tunnel.
“Wow, Stinky, where are we now?” asks Periwinkle.
“This is the Maury River in Goshen, Virginia, and that is the Swinging Bridge.”
“Are we going to walk on it, Stinky?”
“You bet, let’s go!”
“Stinky, this is fun, but please don’t swing the bridge. I don’t want to fall off.” Stinky walks more easily toward Periwinkle. They stay on the bridge for a while enjoying all the beautiful color surrounding them.
Finally it’s time for the tabbies to head back to Stinky’s house. Paw-in-paw they enter the teleportation tunnel for the quick trip.
With all the fresh air and tree climbing the tabbies are starving when they arrive at Stinky’s. His mom fixes them a huge lunch, which they share with Stinky’s fursibs. As the weather is so nice, all the kitties go to the catio for a visit.
Finally it is time for Periwinkle to return home. After lots of paw hugs and whisker kisses with Stinky, she enters the teleportation tunnel and is gone with a whoosh. Stinky returns to the catio and curls up for a long nap and dreams of Periwinkle.
