SUMMER IN THE CITY WITH KITTIES BLUE

Tuesday Doozy of a Snoozy: Summer Version

During these long, hot days of summer, we often cannot find anything better to do than snooze. We still love our Space Station and play with it everyday (see tomorrow’s Wordless Wednesday post for more on this). Other than that, running, jumping and playing do not interest us.

Since we haven’t shared a Tuesday Doozy of a Snoozy with you in a while, we decided to reveal some preferred summer napping spots and positions. As cats, however, we do tend to change our minds often with regard to what those favorites are. As our tagline says, “Cats are predictably unpredictable.” And that’s just how we like it.

Lily Olivia - summer position.

Misty May - summer

Astrid - summer

Cooper Murphy - summer

Calista Jo

Mau and C.M. - summer

Most of us don’t appear to have expired like Lily Olivia in photo #1 or be in a coma like Cooper Murphy in photo #3, nor are we all even snoozing. But, you all know, when those camera-clicking crazies come around, it’s not always easy to ignore them. You may also notice that Lisbeth and Giulietta are missing. Giulietta pretty much refuses to come out of her cat tree cubby unless it is breakfast, dinner or bed time. Lisbeth has been splitting her time between the catio and the very top platform of the dining room cat tree. Somehow she has been able to escape the paparazzi. MOUSES! We’d sure like to know her secret.

Anyhoo, we hope you enjoyed our summer snoozies. Do you have a favorite place to lounge and snooze on hot days in the summer or do you just plop down anywhere?

Since we snagged our post title from one of Mom’s favorite songs by the The Lovin’ Spoonful from the summer of 1966, we thought we’d share it with you. This version is from a live performance in 1986. (The video from YouTube is labeled incorrectly as Loving Spoonful.)

If we’re awake, we’ll see you all tomorrow for Wordless Wednesday.

SUMMER FUN FRIENDLY FILL-INS

Friendly Fill-Ins: Week #56

It is time again to let you know a little more about ourselves. Kitties Blue did not complete any of the fill-ins this week. The kitties did not find them to be feline friendly. As per usual, my completions are in teal italics.

1. A law I would like to see passed is the Pet and Women Safety Act, or PAWS Act (H.R. 909) and (S. 322) reintroduced in February 2017 by U.S. House of Representative Katherine Clark (D-MA) and U.S. Senators Dean Heller (R-NV) and Gary Peters (D-MI). This bipartisan legislation protects victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking and dating violence from emotional and psychological trauma caused by violence against their pets. (Click here, if you are in the United States, to submit the form to ask members of your local legislature to help protect domestic violence survivors and their pets.)

2. My favorite card game is canasta; though, I haven’t played since I left home to go to college. My grandparents taught me to play when I was still too young to hold the cards. My second would be cribbage, which I play with the kitties’ dad, Tom, usually when we are on vacation.

Summer fun with nip.

Mom can play cards. We prefer nippy games.

3. With Summer unofficially here, we will be doing more swimming and bike riding.

4. A favourite Summer memory is from when I was 16. I toured several countries in Europe and then attended classes at the American College in Paris as part of a program entitled, American Pre-College Program in Paris.

Friends, Ellen (15AndMeowing) and Annie (McGuffy’s Reader), are the hosts and authors of the Fill-Ins each week. This is a blog hop, which you can enter by clicking on the badge below, which will take you to Annie’s blog.

ODE TO SUMMERTIME BY KITTIES BLUE

The official start of summer is creeping up quickly. Actually, if the temperature is any reflection of the season, summer is already here. We are having super hot days with oodles of humidity and lots of rain. With that in mind, we thought it was time for a summertime poem. All of us kitties collaborated to come up with these rhymes. Did you know that usually you can tell when we kitties have written a poem? It rhymes. Mom’s poems rarely rhyme.

Anyhoo, to accompany our poem, we are sharing a photo of Misty May on the front porch. Our dear friend Spitty has asked us several times recently to feature her, and we really don’t want to cause him any undue stress. He gets enough trying to get his super busy mom’s attention. So Spitty, buddy, this is for you.

Misty May's photo accompanying "Ode to Summertime."

ODE TO SUMMERTIME

Oh Summertime, we dearly love you;
We will put no other season above you.
The weather is warm enough for catio time,
And birdie TV is absolutely sublime.
We love to loll upon our backs
And wait for Mom to deliver snacks.
Butterflies and bees can flit right by us,
As we’re too relaxed to make a fuss.
But summertime, please turn off the rain.
It has truly become the biggest pain.
And take away the thunder and lightening too,
As it makes us quite grumpy and blue.
We need the sun to appear each day
And bring us sunpuddles in which to play.
Otherwise we’ll nap all day beneath grey skies
To find we have frittered away our nine lives.
Oh summertime, we truly do adore you.
Now please be nice, we must implore you.
Bring us some sun and nice cool breezes,
As those things would surely please us.
Then summertime, we’ll dearly love you;
And promise to put no other season above you.

We also want to share mom’s poem, “Summer Cat,” from three years ago as she wrote it about Misty May, and many of you were not following us then.

SUMMER CAT

Here I lie on my back
four white paws waving in the air,
waiting for a cool breeze
to ruffle my belly fur…
the pavement, a warm hug
and place to scratch my back
until the heat overcomes me.
I seek shade among
the fluorescent orange daylilies
and purple morning glories.
I hide from
the piercing sun, humans,
Lily and Mauricio,
who will steal
my resting place,
should I be discovered.
All desirable sanctuaries
can be compromised
by another creature seeking
refuge from the unwavering
summer sun and its unremitting
baking heat. If one comes sniffing
around my secret garden, I
must hiss and snarl, expending
my limited energy,
until finally I hear the call
that my dinner awaits
and I am summoned
to re-enter my home
where pockets of darkness,
cool air, toys and treats prevail.
