Thoroughly Poetic Thursday: P = Purr
I decided I wanted to write a Haiku for today’s poem. I didn’t have too much difficulty selecting a subject for this week’s prompt letter: P. To me, P = P-U-R-R, of course. I began to regret the Haiku decision after pondering for hours on how I could represent a cat’s purr in 17 words or less. But I was determined and so after more than 24 hours of fretting and tinkering, here are the 13 words I have selected to represent this most important aspect of all cats.
Your purrs sooth my soul,
Make me happy when I’m sad.
Comprehensive cure.
I would never presume to think that these words or an entire book of words could ever capture the essence of a purr. It is truly magical.
Two of the Kitties Blue are champions when it comes to purring. I wish I had audio to share here, but I do not. I will have to make it a priority to record these two rumblers. Can you guess who they are?
It’s the tortie girls, Calista Jo and Astrid. I don’t know if that is just a coincidence or if those thundering purrs come along with the tortitude.
I believe Astrid has the louder purr; though, she’s the smaller cat. Her favorite time to crank it up is when she’s in my lap doing her four-pawed kneading on my thighs. Ouch!
Calista Jo is my own purrsonal (MOL!) white-noise cat at bedtime. She throws herself against my back with her head near mine and dials up the volume. If she isn’t there at bedtime, I always call her name and tell her I need her to purr me to sleep.
Do you have a champion purr puss in your household? Does s/he have a purrticular time or place to purr you a lullaby? Is she a tortie? Inquiring cats want to know.
We are purrticipating in Sammy’s (onespoiledcat) Thoroughly Poetic Thursday. Please join us. You don’t have to be a purrfessional poet to take part.
Now that is a purrfect poem! My angel Rosie had the loudest purr of any kitty I’ve shared my life with yet. As for the kitties I have now, they all purr quite easily, but Thimble is by far the loudest. All you have to do is look at her to get her motor going, and then it’s all sorts of squeaky loudness, and sometimes involves drool. It pretty much makes my heart melt. Evan is my Calista Jo and purrs me to sleep. Happy purring!
I adore your haiku! I’ve found that torties have very special purrs too 🙂
Excellent poem! A cat’s purr is my favorite sound in the world. That is cute that Astrid make 4 wheel drive muffins on you, Spooky used to do that too, he is the only one of our cats that ever did.
PURR-fect poetry! Yes, somekitty has a very loud motor. And meow. *looks at Faraday*
your fur

Lovely haiku! Mom loves it when we purr by her head when she’s laying down.
I’m the loud purrer around here. The mom says if they hooked up cables to me, I could probably light up a whole city with my purring. 😉 ~Wally

Quite a few of us get the purrs going good here too!
Love your Haiku! My oldest kitty, Midge, sounds like an engine revving when her purrs get going. I’ve never heard anything like it! But I absolutely love it! 🙂
In our house, Buster is the purr-er. If he wants a scritch very badly, he’ll be purring as he comes near the humans. We’ve had Emma for a long time but only recently did we hear her soft purrs.
Emma and Buster
Athena’s purr to me is pure magic! She does purr quite loud I think, as many of you may have heard on her videos. She purrs a lot too and it’s just so soothing 🙂
Purrs xx
Athena and Marie
Of our 9 cats, Lucio probably has the loudest purr. He is the closest thing to having a John Deere tractor on one’s pillow. He is a long-haired tortie-tabby with white. And he does have catitude!
We only have one kitty, so Cody is our “Purr Champion” love how you captured the essence of the “purr!”
My tuxie TC is my champion purrer. She also sleeps against my back with her head against my shoulders so her purrs are massaging me!
My Tortie Angel Spicy was always a little purrer and Gin Gin and Munchie I can only feel their purrs not hear them.
Again we have the same “P” for our poems! Sam is a champion purr machine too but sadly he’s never been a “sleep with Mom and Dad” kind of guy – otherwise I would love to fall asleep to his magical purr. Thanks for being poetic with us today and every Thursday……and hugs to your purr-babies and the rest of the crew from me and my Sam boy!
Love, Pam
Binga is known for what my human calls her “extreme purrs.” I’m usually not very loud… unless I think I am getting treats or I’m in a hotel room! Then I am a purring machine!
We both purr lots and lots usually when we’re snuggled up on Mum’s lap.
Minko has quite a loud purr, and Pipo can be heard across the room if he sees pawppy and want a belly rub…he purrs in anticipation, MOL!
Purring is so soothing as you wrote:)
