Thoroughly Poetic Thursday
Today is the day Angel Sammy and Teddy (Two Spoiled Cats) challenge those who wish to participate to write a poem. They provide an inspiration photo to give us a starting place.
Here’s this week’s photo.
This photo brought back memories of my days in college, and I ended up writing about that. My poem is more a narrative than a poem and definitely not my best work. However, you will learn a bit more about me.
A Dangerous Idea
Hitchhiking is a dangerous mode of transportation—
A lesson I learned first hand in college.
I stuck out my thumb very late almost every night.
I was mugged, almost sexually assaulted—twice
And shot at on campus—by the National Guard.
But I had no choice—buses didn’t run at night,
And I had a job that never ended before 11 or 12.
$1.35 per hour was barely enough to cover rent,
A car was not in my future; Uber did not exist.
But still, hitchhiking was safer 50 years ago.
This girl with all her possessions is a target
For every pervert and nutcase on the road.
If picked up, she could be robbed, raped or killed.
But maybe she carries pepper spray or a gun.
If naive, with no plans to protect herself,
She may get a ride but never reach her destination.

Thankful Thursday
We seem to have the same thankfuls each week, but just to be thankful about anything is a blessing.
Though our little guy, Sawyer, had a seizure on Saturday, it subsided without the need for intervention, and even better, his last one was 20 days previous. That is the longest time between seizures in at least five months. That is a thankful with a capital “T.”
Though it is not a huge deal, I am thankful again this week for being one of two first commenters on the Two Spoiled Cats’ Tuesday Teaser and getting the badge at the left. In the scheme of things, for me it really is a pretty big deal. It means I actually remembered what day of the week it was when I woke up. As the kitties’ dad says, “When you’re retired, everyday is the weekend.”
Finally, Kitties Blue, their Dad and I, but especially Mau and Sawyer, are thankful that the Friends Furever (Allie, Noelle, Raz and Mom Sharon) were spared the brunt of Hurricane Dorian.
Thankful Thursday is a blog hop hosted by everybody’s pal, Brian. To join in the hop, post for what you are thankful on your blog, and then click on the badge below to go to his and add the link to your post.
When Ma was a wee lass LOTS of peeps hitchhiked ~ wasn’t a good idea back then eithers!
Anyhu, I am so sorry you had another seizure Sawyer ~ butts glad it wasn’t a bad one and you recovered quickly. {{{hugs}}}
Kisses,
Ruby ♥
I am sorry Sawyer had a seizure, but glad it wasn’t a bad one. You are a brave woman to have hitchhiked. I am glad you survived. Congrats on being a first commenter. XO
Oh wow…that poem says a lot! We’re sorry to hear Sawyer had another seizure but grateful that it wasn’t so severe. Purrs that there are no more….
I am glad Sawyer went so much longer between seizures, and that it wasn’t a big one.
I only hitchhiked once with my friend. We were both 12 years old and it was a big adventure for us. Looking back, we were lucky that no harm came to us.
Oh wow, I’ve never hitchhiked before myself, but that sounds terrifying!
And I’m glad Sawyer is doing okay. It’s good to be thankful. It can be so easy to get caught up in all the bad things that we lose sight of the little miracles that happen in our lives each and every day.
Yay! Good news about Sawyer, I’m sorry he had another seizure, but it looks like they are getting a little better – we’ll take all the good news we can get for Sawyer. Purrs and prayers and POTP for Sawyer.
The Hubby tells me all kinds of hitchhiking stories, from back in the day. I never tried, although sometimes I see a person walking next to the road, and I wonder if I should offer to give them a ride. Guess if I’m going to do that, I should have pepper spray, etc. on hand!
Love your poem as always.
I’m so sorry Sawyer had a seizure, but I’m happy it went away without assistance.
Have a fabulous Thankful Thursday. Special lovies to Sawyer and a big hug to Mom Janet. ♥
Holy CARP! That is something we never knew about you for sure!
As always, we purr and pray for Sawyer to be free from seizures. We love him so much.
We are super Thankful that Dorian spared us.
The Florida Furkids with smoochies and love to Mau from Allie and paw pats and headbonks to Sawyer from Noelle
We’re thankful about Sawyer too! That narrative is very good and we know we’ll never hitchhike ever!
Oh my, that was some poem. The Dad used to hitchhike back in the day too, he sure wouldn’t now. We are sure glad Sawyer is doing better between seizures and that the last one wasn’t overly bad. Thanks for joining the Thankful Thursday Blog Hop!
We thought this photo would be an interesting one for poetry and we were right! It’s a different world these days in MANY ways but hitching a ride certainly is one of them. Glad you made it through those years – I hitched but only with people I knew back in the day. Too scary for words now though. We are SOOOOOOO happy that it was 20 long days between seizures for Sawyer and it resolved relatively quickly. Let’s hope this trend continues or even improves! Where there is hope – there is possibility!
Love, Pam (and Teddy too)
Seizures are so awful and scary. We hope Sawyer continues to have fewer, further apart.
I hate being negative and seeing the worst in everything – unfortunately, most of life is as ugly as we expect.
Glad Sawyer’s seizure wasn’t a bad one.
My momma’s never hitchhiked, but she’s had creepy guys offer her rides when she was just walking! Some when she was walking her dog even. And she got multiple approaches about being in porn – uhhh, if she was going to do that, she’d make the money from it, MOL!
I have never hitchhiked, and I’m blessed that it’s never even remotely needed to be an option for me. The thought of it terrifies me, especially in today’s world. And I am so so so happy that Sawyer has only had one seizure in the past couple of weeks, and that it stopped on its own! We are purring and praying so hard that his seizures continue to become less and less frequent and less and less severe.
I’m glad Sawyer’s seizure was not a bad one, and it has been so long since the last one. I’m grateful too!
