NATIONAL TABBY CAT DAY SUNDAY SELFIES

Sunday Selfies: Week #454

A couple commenters yesterday mentioned that they were looking forward to today’s surprise. There really wasn’t going to be a surprise, other than the fact that one of us Kitties Blue had already snapped a selfie.

Portent of grey tabby cat sleeping

And that kitty was me, Sawyer. As Audrey got away with posting a snoozy selfie last Sunday, I decided I could do the same this week. I think I look cute awake or asleep.

Surprise!

Actually, we do have a surprise. Unfortunately, it is not a good one. Somehow Raleigh got out of the catio. When Mom and Dad called him for dinner last night, he didn’t come. Mom checked the upstairs catio and didn’t find him. They thought he must be inside on the second floor. A very short time later, Mom looked out the kitchen window and saw him under the catio. Of course, trying to get him to come to her or Dad was futile, and he finally disappeared with barely 30 minutes of daylight left.

Raleigh is a good-for-nothing bum, and he continually takes his collar off. As he hates being touched, it is often days before Mom or Dad can get it back on him. So he was and still is out somewhere without it.

Mom and Dad have set up our trap under the catio with both stinky goodness and tuna in it. Dad checked it at 10 p.m., but it still sat empty. Mom plans to check it every hour through the night. And she will start searching the neighborhood in the morning. Rain is in the weather forecast, which isn’t good, but might just tempt him to come home.

He’s also been posted as lost on PawBoost, our neighborhood forum and Facebook, and Mom has reported him missing to the microchip company.

To be honest, Mom does not expect to see him again. He may like getting three square meals a day as well as treats and free-feeding kibble, but he doesn’t like Mom or Dad or any other people for that matter. Don’t get me wrong, she wants him to come home or be found, but she is trying to be realistic.

After going through this with me, she doesn’t need any advice or suggestions on how to find him or get him home. But she and Dad ask you to please keep the little stinker in your prayers. She and Dad obviously do not want anything bad to happen to him.

National Tabby Cat Day

Cooper Murphy, Audrey and I are looking forward to being spoiled rotten today. Of course, that happens everyday. If Raleigh comes home, he’ll get the same treatment. What self-respecting tabby goes missing the day before our special day? Sheesh! Anyhoo, we wish all our tabby friends a treat- and fun-filled day, including lots of cuddles and play time.

Hopping Time

Now that I have shared my adorable, snoozing selfie with you and filled you in on most of our news (Kizmet also escaped on Caturday, but as she wears her tracking collar, she was easily found and brought back in the house.), it’s time for you to snap your selfie and join our little hop. You know your friends will be looking for you, and you don’t want to let them down.

After that, you can enjoy a nice Easy Sunday and Tabby Cat Day.

Thanks for joining us today and being our friends.

Purrs and paw-pats, Sawyer (with whisker kisses to Noelle)

UPDATE: The little turkey returned home at 3:30 a.m. Mom heard some cat scratching franticly at the cat door. It was Raleigh on the outside. She and Dad had left the door to the catio open in case Raleigh came home. He went straight to the food bowl! Guess he gets to celebrate National Tabby Cat Day after all.

Thanks for your prayers!

TWO CATS CATURDAY ART

Caturday Art

I have two versions of today’s art to share with you. I had a third, but I started having difficulty with my photo editing app.

The subjects of today’s art are Audrey and Kizmet. Kizmet had been bathing Audrey and stopped. Audrey was trying to get her to begin again. As you can see, Kizmet is wearing a “don’t bother me kid” expression.

Framed art of a tabby cat on its back with a paw on a grey cat's chest. The art is in grey and browns with a chiseled effect.

The above was created using the Painnt app. The effect is Chiseling with Original coloring. The frame is a bit overwhelming but the colors went so well with the photo, I just had to use it. It is from favpng.

The same photo of the tabby cat with paw on grey cat's chest but with different colors, entitled, Pyrenees Pines, and framed with an acid green border to match the greens in the art.

This is the Pyrenees Pines effect from Painnt. And the frame is again from favpng.

I only created a puzzle from the Pyrenees Pines option due to all the white space around the Chiseling photo.

If you have a favorite, let Audrey, Kismet and me know in the comments.

Sunday Selfies Reminder

I know none of you need a reminder that tomorrow is selfie day, but someone new just might pop in today and know nothing about our little hop. Amazingly, I already have a host for tomorrow’s hop.  And they have already snapped their selfie.

Both of those things are rare occurrences. I could spill the beans and let you know who it is, but then you might not come to see us tomorrow. So, my lips are sealed. Kitties Blue and I will be waiting right here for you to check in.

Thanks for coming by. Have a great Caturday!

CAT TREE COMPETITION!

Feline Friday

Raleigh is shocked and disgruntled to find Cooper Murphy is already ensconced in the cat tree.

Friendly Fill-Ins

Time again to let you know a bit more about Kitties Blue and myself by completing the weekly fill-ins. Ellen (15 And Meowing) and Lorianne (Four-Legged Furballs) host the Friendly Fill-Ins blog hop. On Thursday they each select two sentences to be filled in by hop participants. You can find those on both blogs. Enter the hop by clicking on the graphic.

Whenever I am having trouble completing the fill-ins, I can always rely on Sawyer to help me. That’s exactly what happened again this week. He let me do the first three fill-ins, and he completed number four. Thanks, pal!

We both used teal italics for our fill-ins. Any explanatory information is in parenthesis.

1. I wish my town (city) had a cat cafe.

2. So far, this year has been speeding by too quickly.

3. Air travel is a little too scary and expensive now for my liking.

4. Sawyer: Even if I don’t like my meds, I really appreciate that my mom and dad take such good care of me. (I am now getting stinky goodness kitten food and am eating better. Talk about a lucky cat!)

That’s it for today. Sorry we didn’t post yesterday. I am trying to gather together the posts I want to enter in this year’s CWA (Cat Writers’ Association) Contest, and it is a daunting task. Thankfully, I only have two more months of posts to go through.

We will be back tomorrow with some Caturday Art.

THE ADVENTURES OF PERIWINKLE & STINKY: PART CLXXXIV

Disclaimer: This post is not sponsored by any brand, manufacturer
or supplier. It is meant for informational purposes only. Neither Stinky, Periwinkle, Kitties Blue nor The Cat on My Head personally endorse
or recommend any products mentioned here.

Periwinkle’s Arrival

Stinky is fairly certain that even though today’s adventure is going to be very helpful for pet owners, it may not be that much fun for Periwinkle and him. Nonetheless, they will get to spend the day together, which is always enjoyable. As Stinky waits for Periwinkle, he is thinking about all the supplies they will need for today. He is caught off guard when the teleportation begins to shake, but he’s ready when Periwinkle comes whooshing out.

The two tabbies spend several minutes paw hugging and whisker kissing before Periwinkle asks the inevitable question: “So what’s on the agenda today, Stinky?”

National Pet First Aid Awareness Month

“Something that may not be much fun, but I think important to share with our readers,” Stinky replies. Periwinkle gives him a quizzical look before he can explain. Stinky quickly continues, “April is National Pet First Aid Awareness Month. It’s the American Red Cross’s way of drawing attention to the need for pet owners to know specialized pet first aid.”

“Okay, so what is the plan with regard to pet first aid?” asks Periwinkle.

“Well I thought we could let our friends’ humans know what to put in their cat-specific first aid kit.“

“Stinky, you are right, that doesn’t sound like much fun, but it is important. And, even though, our fursibs and most of our friends are inside cats, it doesn’t mean they’ll never get hurt or sick.”

“Very true, Periwinkle. You know my big brother, Angel Mau, was bitten by a neighbor cat in 2017. He was an inside/outside cat, but it is still possible to get bitten or scratched by one of your fursibs. Here’s a couple of photos to show how serious injuries like this can be.

Black cat with bites on back.

Tuxedo Cat with white bandage around torso.

“My mom and dad cleaned him up really well and put antiseptic on the wound before bandaging it up.”

Pre-Made First Aid Kits

“Lots of retailers like Chewy, Amazon, Walmart and even Etsy have first aid kits for pets, but I think we should let our readers know what kind of things to include if they want to make one for their cat,” Stinky tells Periwinkle.

“That’s a good idea, Stinky, but, most importantly, we need to remind pet parents that a first aid kit is for just that…first aid. Humans always need to take their pet to the vet if they are sick or injured. And that may mean the emergency vet if it is after hours or on a weekend.”

“That’s right, Periwinkle. Though my mom and dad gave first aid to Mau, they took him to the vet the first thing the following morning.”

Cat First Aid Guides

“Most kits will include a first aid guide, but if not or if pet parents want to create their own kit, I found some guides at Amazon,” Stinky tells Periwinkle.

Here are three:

😺 The Cat First Aid book by the American Red Cross, includes the symptoms and care for more than 60 feline health conditions.
It also includes instructions for putting together a pet first aid kit as well as how to administer medications and recognize what constitutes an emergency.

😺 First Aid for Cats: An Owner’s Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet by Stefanie Schwartz, DVM

😺 The First-Aid Companion for Dogs & Cats by Amy Shojai. (My mom knows her. She is the founder of the Cat Writers’ Association and an award winning author who has written 35-plus pet care books.)

Assembling Your Own First Aid Kit

“Stinky, what should our humans include in their cat first aid kit?”

“Here’s a list of suggestions for a cat first aid kit, Periwinkle. These are based on what I found included in some pre-made kits as well as the Red Cross site and the Pet Poison Helpline.

∗ alcohol wipes/prep pads
∗ antiseptic wipes, lotion or spray
∗ latex-free, disposable gloves
∗ sterile saline
∗ cotton balls or swabs
∗ styptic powder or pencil
∗ iodine prep pads
∗ sting relief pads
∗ adhesive tape
∗ sterile, non-stick gauze pads in multiple sizes and gauze rolls
∗ 5 x 9 inch sterile trauma pad
∗ two-inch elastic bandage
∗ instant cold packs
∗ thermal foil emergency blanket
∗ blunt-tip scissors
∗ tweezers
∗ tongue depressor
∗ bottle opener
∗ flexible rectal thermometer with petroleum jelly or other pet-safe lubricant
∗ eyewash
∗ ear-cleaning solution

Additional Important Information

I addition, if purchasing a first aid kit that is not cat specific, items may be included that should not be used for cats, such as hydrogen peroxide.

It is also a good idea to have the phone numbers of your veterinarian, the local 24-hour emergency vet and the ASPCA Poison Control  Center inside the kit.

“Wow, Stinky, you really did your research. I hope our readers will save this post so they can make their own Cat First Aid Kit if they don’t already have one.”

“Thanks, Periwinkle. Maybe, if our readers have any other items they think should be in the kit, they can let us know in the comments.”

“That’s a great idea.”

Visiting Mau & Allie’s Garden

“Stinky, what would you think about going outside in the fresh air and enjoying a snack?” asks Periwinkle.

“That also is a great idea. Since Mau was a part of our post, let’s visit him,” Stinky suggests.

First Aid: Cat Three purple tulips and a garden stone with the words: Mauricio and Allie's Garden Forever Loved & In Our Hearts.

“I always love visiting this beautiful place, Stinky. It’s so peaceful!”

“I agree, Periwinkle. Let’s have our picnic here.”

Cat First Aid: Cartoon tabbies sitting on a bench with a pineapple motif along with jars of treats and with a red plaid picnic blanket on the ground.

“Stinky, this is a wonderful end to our day. I know the information we provided our readers today was super important, but relaxing with you outside in the sunshine is my definition of a purrfect day.”

“I totally agree, Periwinkle!”

After their snack and a little nap, Stinky and Periwinkle spend time whisker kissing and paw hugging. Then it’s time for Periwinkle to return home, and Stinky accompanies her the the teleportation tunnel. With final waves and blown kisses, Periwinkle enters the tunnel and is gone in a whoosh. Stinky heads to the catio to spend time with his fursibs.

The End

Periwinkle and Stinky will be joining the Happy Tuesday blog hop at Comedy Plus. You can do the same by clicking the badge below.

COMPETITION FOR #1 NAPPER

Sunday Selfies: Week #453

Tabby kitten, Audrey, is in the #1 napper competition inn organza ribbon. a circular photo framed with white lace , lavender and yellow flowers

As I suspected, most of the Kitties Blue spent yesterday in the bedroom napping, which made it easy to get a selfie for today. Audrey is competing with Calista Jo to be the #1 napper among the Kitties Blue. She can nap all day and sleep all night! I’ll keep you posted as to which feline eventually wins the battle of the snooze!

Whether you’re awake or asleep in your selfie, we really want to see it. And Kitties Blue and I know all your other friends want to as well. If you are too busy or sleepy to join us today, the hop remains open through Thursday, but then you already know that.

If you are here to join the hop or merely here to check out your friends, thank you so much for joining us. Enjoy an easy Sunday as well.

EARTH DAY 2023 WITH KITTIES BLUE

Earth Day Caturday Art

Earth Day graphic with a globe, tree and banner, which reads, "Earth Day," & the nine Kitties Blue.

World Earth Day is a global awareness celebrated every year on April 22. The reason to participate in this event is to enhance the public’s awareness of our earth and environment. Though, celebrated only one day each year; every day should be considered Earth Day. All citizens should take measures to protect our planet.

The first Earth Day (1970) sparked the passage in the U.S. of the Clean Air, Clean Water and Endangered Species Acts as well as the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency.

EARTHDAY.ORG’s theme for Earth Day 2023 is Invest in our Planet™. This is a continuation of the 2022 theme. The theme is focused on involving governments, institutions, businesses and Earth’s more than one billion citizens who participate in Earth Day annually, to focus on natural processes, emerging green technologies and innovative thinking that can restore the world’s ecosystems.

Climate change is real, and it is time to take immediate action if we are to avoid mass extinction of species, catastrophic pollution of the world’s oceans, destruction of communities and displacement of millions of individuals.

Please commit to helping with this cause by reducing your carbon footprint, embracing alternative forms of energy and recycling, reusing and repurposing. Kitties Blue mom and dad have 40-plus solar panels on the roof of their home and always recycle. Also, Dad Tom bikes everywhere when the weather permits.

Sunday Selfies Reminder

It’s that time again tomorrow. Time for you to snap a selfie and share it with us and all your friends. As usual, I’ll be trying to coerce one of the Kitties Blue into participating. As today is supposed to be mostly rainy, I suppose they’ll all be hanging out in the bedroom. That should make it easy to find either a willing or unwilling host. Whichever of the gang ends up here tomorrow, I can guarantee you’ll be greeted with open paws.

Thanks for joining us today, enjoy your Caturday and do something good for the Earth.

FOUR’S A CROWD!

Feline Friday

Dad Tom and I rarely have enough room for the two of us in our king-sized bed once several of the Kitties Blue pile on! The four pictured below were not the only ones with us on that particular night. Calista Jo and Kizmet were also present!

Four of the Kitties Blue, a grey, Manx tabby, light ginger tabby, torbie and a tuxedo cat take over humans' bed and try to crowd them out.

Sawyer, Audrey, Raleigh and Misty May will be participating in the Feline Friday blog hop at messymimi’s meanderings. To do the same, click on the Feline Friday badge.

Whenever I am having trouble completing the fill-ins, I can always rely on Sawyer to step up. That’s exactly what happened this week. He completed numbers 1 through 3, and Stinky helped him out by completing number 4. Thanks boys!

They both used teal italics for their fill-ins. Any explanatory information is in parenthesis.

1. I was pleased to hear that Audrey and Raleigh are the last kitties our humans plan to adopt. (As you can see from the photo above, they are always invading my space.)

2. There should be a Manx Cat Appreciation Day. (Maybe I can get my mom to start one.)

3. I have a lot of confidence in my ability to get treats.

4. Planning fun adventures for Periwinkle and me is easier said than done.

Contest

Kitties Blue are having a little contest. One Wednesday, I posted a photo of six cats napping in the bedroom. The first person to identify the three cats missing from the photo on the post, “Six Bums on a Breezy Day,” will win a surprise prize. You have until tomorrow at noon EDT to leave your guess on that post. Good Luck!

Thanks for joining us today. We will return tomorrow with some special Earth Day Caturday Art.

A MAGICAL PLACE POEM & THANKFULS

Throughly Poetic Thursday

Time again to join our friends Teddy and Angel Sammy from Two Spoiled Cats for a bit of poetry. They provided us with an amazing inspiration photo this week. In fact, I would love to visit this gorgeous place. Based on our poem, it appears as if all nine Kitties Blue agree. This beautiful locale, however, is in New Zealand, so neither the Kitties Blue nor I will be able to check it out firsthand. But, all nine actually made it into the photo this week.

Nine cats at a sunken garden in New Zealand with grassy trails and floral plantings.

A Magical Place

What a magical place we have recently found.
It’s a wondrous and exciting cat playground.
The tranquility and beauty are mesmerizing.
About it we are unable to stop rhapsodizing.
The little, grassy trails are fun to explore.
What feline could ask for anything more?
Sawyer says the nommy treats are missing.
We told him no negativity or hissing.
Stinky wants to adventure here with Periwinkle.
We think that would make her eyes absolutely twinkle!
We want to stay here now and forever,
Breathing in the exotic aromas and fresh air,
But mom says then it would lose its appeal
And no longer be such a big deal.
But we all must disagree with her.
It makes us purr and will always hold its allure.

 © Janet Buickerood Blue – 04/19/2023

If you’d like to try writing some poetry, check out Two Spoiled Cats (by clicking on the poetry badge) for next week’s inspiration photo. Please read Angel Sammy’s poem when you visit. He sends it to Teddy each week from the Rainbow Bridge, and his poems are always excellent.

Thankful Thursday

On Thursday, we also like to share our thankfuls with you and join Brian’s blog hop.

😺 Last Friday Dad Tom and I went to Charlottesville and met up with one of our nephews from California and his eldest daughter. She will be attending the University of Virginia as a Freshman in the fall and was touring the campus. We are thankful and excited that she will only be two hours from us, giving us the opportunity to see her with some regularity.

😺 I am thankful I was able to scrub our porch furniture, the porch railings and window sills and some of the floor yesterday. While I did that Dad Tom pressure washed our brick walk. With the new chair and settee cushions and pillows I bought, our porch is going to look great this summer.

😺 I am thankful that a bunny was visiting in our side yard yesterday. We also saw two in the alley when we returned home Friday night. I have also been seeing the chipmunks regularly. Being able to observe these little critters makes me very happy. I am just waiting for the hummingbirds to reappear!

😺 Finally, Kitties Blue and I are thankful to everyone who joined our Sunday Selfies blog hop as well as everybody who follows, reads and comments on our posts. But, most of all, we are thankful for your friendship.

If you’d like to join the hop, click on Brian’s badge.
