PIRATES CELEBRATE 3000TH POST!

3,000th Post

Arrrgh…how did that happen? I cannot wrap my head around that 3000 number. To those of you who have been with us since somewhere near the beginning as well as everyone who has ever visited, thank you! Without your following and support, I would not have reached this milestone nor would I still be writing this blog.

Sparks/Meow (Talk) Like a Pirate Day

Our three boys, Cooper Murphy (Decrepit Hugo Scarr), Sawyer (Cap’n Joe Leadhead) and Raleigh (Armless Bart Bellamy) are here to celebrate this fun holiday and present our Spark. Cap’n Joe is much too young for grog, pillaging or digging for buried treasure; though, he certainly is an energetic litter box excavator. I think we’ll consider him an apprentice pirate for this year.

Two tabby cats (one grey and one orange) and one orange tabby kitten dressed in pirate clothing.

I absolutely love this Spark from Disney. Reading is one of my favorite pastimes.

Sparks began as a blog hop, created by our friend, Annie (McGuffy’s Reader). Annie is taking a “break” from blogging, so there is no hop. Many of us still continue to post a Spark on Monday, as we believe in Annie’s vision: “I believe we are meant to be lights in this world. If we allow our light to shine, we can see where we are going. It is then that we can begin to truly see each other clearly. Together, we can light up the entire world!”

Comment-a-thon

In honor of Misty May and Angel Mau, Kitties Blue and I are having a comment-a-thon. I will donate $1 for every comment (one per person, please) made on their birthday post through midnight Thursday. One commenter, selected through Random.org, will have the opportunity to select the pet shelter, rescue or charity to receive the donation. So please feel free to invite all your friends to join the party and comment.

The Adventures of Periwinkle & Stinky

This fun-loving, tabby duo will return tomorrow with the next installment in their adventure series. It is Periwinkle’s week to plan and post their adventure, so look for them at Friends Furever tomorrow. I know both Periwinkle and Stinky will be looking forward to seeing all of you.

TOTALLY TERRIFIC TORTIE

Sunday Selfies: Week #422

Totally terrific Tortie: portrait of a tortie cat with green eyes in a back and red frame

This is what happens when I sit on Mom’s lap and prevent her from doing anything. I get talked into taking a selfie. I’m normally not so great of a photographer, but I believe I did a pretty good job today. I cut the tip of my ear off, but I don’t think it distracts from my appearance. And Mom said that I am totally terrific.

As Mom did not make a puzzle for you yesterday, I convinced her to make one today. I hope you enjoy completing it.

Comment-a-thon

Yesterday in celebration of Misty May and Angel Mau’s 18th birthdays, Mom announced we are having a comment-a-thon. Anyone commenting on yesterday’s post (The link is at the bottom of this page.) before midnight Thursday will get one entry in a random drawing to receive the opportunity to select their favorite pet rescue, shelter or charity to receive a donation. Mom has pledged $1 per comment. As I write this, we are at $25. Please help us at least double that.

Hopping Time

It’s now the time when you get to share your selfie with me, the other Kitties Blue and all your friends. Though, I am not a fan of taking selfies; I am a fan of viewing them. If you cannot join us today, add your selfie to the hop anytime before Thursday midnight. And if you ever have any trouble linking up, just let my mom know, and she’ll hook you up.

Thanks so much for participating in our hop, following and supporting us and being our friends.

Purrs & paw-pats, Astrid (with kisses for my hubby Sampy)

18TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION & COMMENT-A-THON

Caturday Birthday Art

Today Misty May and Angel Mau celebrate their 18th birthday. My wish for today would be that Mau was still with us to celebrate. He was a wonderful cat with a warm and generous heart. I think about and miss him everyday.

birthday celebration comment-a-thon with kitten and adult photos of two tuxie cats

Their birthday card includes two of the very earliest photos taken shortly after we adopted Misty may and Mau in November of 2004. As youngsters they were bonded but grew apart as years passed. Mauricio was the nurturer, but he lavished his attention on others of the Kitties Blue and not his sister.

Though Misty May has been deaf for a few years and suffers from thyroid disease, she just keeps going like that Energizer bunny. She prefers to spend her days on the front porch and her nights on my pillow. She occasionally decides to spend an afternoon on one of our neighbor’s porches but is always home in plenty of time for meals.

I recently learned that male cats have shorter lifespans (up to two to three years less) than female cats, so that may be the reason Misty May is still with us and Mau isn’t. He received his angel wings on July 17, 2020.

Party Time

Cooper Murphy created an exceptionally cute cake. And we have some raspberry and nip-garnished, pink champagne to accompany it. Please help yourselves.

Comment-a-thon

In honor of Misty May and Angel Mau, Kitties Blue and I are having a comment-a-thon. I will donate $1 for every comment (one per person, please) made on this post through midnight Thursday. One commenter, selected through Random.org, will have the opportunity to select the pet rescue or charity to receive the donation. So please feel free to invite all your friends to join the party and comment.

Sunday Selfies Reminder

It is time again for selfies. And miracle of miracles, I know who your host will be. And she’s already snapped her photo. But that’s as much of a hint as you’ll get. You will need to join us again tomorrow to find out which of the girls it is.

Thanks for joining us for today’s celebration. Have a purrfect day.

KITTENS DISCOVER THE CATIO & FILL-INS

Feline/Friendship Friday

The kittens have discovered the cat door and the catio! I am happy Audrey and Raleigh will have time to enjoy the catio with their big brothers and sisters before the cold weather sets in.

Look at the size of those paws. Substantial, wouldn’t you agree? Cooper Murphy may have competition from Raleigh for big cat of the house status in a couple of years.

Raleigh is participating in the Feline Friday and Friendship Friday blog hops at Comedy Plus and Create With Joy respectively.

Friendly Fill-Ins

I am so lucky that once again Sawyer, with some additional help from Calista Jo, stepped up to assist with fill-ins. As usual, we all used teal italics for our fill-ins.

1. Unexpected news is often sad.
2. Calista Jo: Sometimes I hiss and growl at the other cats to amuse myself.
3. I enjoy sharing about Kitties Blue, which is the reason that I write The Cat on My Head.
4. Sawyer: Being able to stop my seizures before they happen would be my superpower of choice.

Sawyer, Calista Jo and I are joining the Friendly Fill-ins blog hop hosted by Ellen (15 And Meowing) and Lorianne (Four-Legged- Furballs). To do the same, check out either of their blogs on Thursday for the sentences to be filled in. You can join the hop by clicking on their badge.

We’ll be back tomorrow to celebrate Misty May and Angel Mau’s 18th birthdays and share some Caturday Art. We’ll also be having a comment-a-thon and giving one of our commenters, through a random drawing, the opportunity to receive a donation for their favorite pet charity or rescue. So please join us and invite all your friends to do the same.

CRAZY ADVENTUROUS CATS

Thoroughly Poetic Thursday

I truly had fun with this week’s inspiration photo provided by Teddy and Angel Sammy from Two Spoiled Cats. The photo now includes all nine of the Kitties Blue, and I wrote a fantastical poem to accompany it.

I am not certain that even a cat could land on its feet if it fell from such an extreme height.

Crazy, adventurous cats: Black and White Photo of steel works having lunch on a girder way above the city with nine cats on their laps.

L – R: Cooper Murphy, Lisbeth, Kizmet, Misty May, Astrid, Audrey, Raleigh, Sawyer & Calista Jo

Nine Crazy Adventurous Cats

When the steelworkers heard it was take your cat to work day
All but two agreed that participating would be okay.
But the two only dissented as neither had a cat—
One was allergic, the other had a pet rat.
They decided to have the visit on their lunch break
To distract the felines by some cheese and steak.
Kitties were hoisted to the beam one by one
Until each was seated with their human.
We won’t pretend no fur was shed
Or that their sharp claws they did not embed
Into the skin of their humans and each other!
None of the tough men, however, did it bother.
They enjoyed introducing their feline friends
And telling tales of there playful weekends.
But after lunch it was time for the kitties to go.
They were lowered to the sidewalk ever so slow
Where they waited until quitting time in their baskets
To return home for cuddles and kitty treat biscuits!

I hope you had a laugh while reading this. It is a terribly far-fetched idea!

As you can see, poetry is lots of fun to write. I really think you should give it a try if you haven’t already.

Check out Two Spoiled Cats for next week’s inspiration photo by clicking on the poetry badge. When you visit, please take time to read Angel Sammy’s poem. He transmits it to Teddy from the Bridge, and he is a masterful wordsmith!

Thankful Thursday

Kitties Blue and I have a very long list of thankfuls this week and will be joining the Thankful Thursday blog hop over at Brian’s Home.

Firstly, I am particularly thankful that after the host for The Cat on My Head broke our site, we were only down 20 hours and our site has been restored. Maintenance and an update of our host’s servers were scheduled for Wednesday afternoon. Unfortunately, during that process, our site started throwing out “critical error” messages, and neither I or any of you were able to access it. If you missed reading “The Adventures of Periwinkle & Stinky” yesterday, your two favorite cartoon tabbies hope you’ll click the link to that post at the bottom of this one.

Sawyer has two terrific thankfuls this week. He’s been seizure-free for 22 days, which is fantastic. But his second thankful is an even bigger accomplishment. His “story” has been accepted for publication in an upcoming anthology, Purrserverance, being compiled and edited by author and fellow blogger, Sierra Koester, from Fur Everywhere. He tells about his ordeal with regard to his seizures as well as his unauthorized walkabout.

I am thankful that my injured knee is finally improving after a cortisone injection. I’ve been able to slowly begin riding Peloton again and get around with my cane instead of my walker. I also have an appointment next month to get a second opinion on getting a knee replacement—something my current orthopedist is reluctant to do.

The Kitties Blue and I are always thankful for your support, following and friendship.

THE ADVENTURES OF PERIWINKLE & STINKY: PART CLII

What Should We Do Today?

Stinky is more than a little worried about his rather sketchy plans for today’s adventure. He’s really hoping Periwinkle won’t be disappointed. As he paces back and forth in front of the tunnel, Stinky has to continually chase Audrey and Raleigh away as they think the tunnel is a fun place to play. Though, they are pains in his tush; he doesn’t want them whooshing off to parts unknown.

Finally, Periwinkle arrives, and the whoosh from the tunnel scares the kittens away. She and Stinky share many paw hugs and whisker kisses. Then comes the moment Stinky has been dreading when Periwinkle asks, “What fun thing are we doing today, Stinky?”

“Periwinkle, after more than 150 adventures, sometimes it is really difficult to come up with a unique and exciting adventure, especially as I have a big imagination but a very tiny budget. I thought we could do something for Meow Like a Pirate Day, but that is still six days from now.”

“I understand, I often have the same problem coming up with cool ideas,” replies Periwinkle.

“Then I thought we could celebrate my mom’s stepmother Terry’s birthday, but she passed away like nine years ago. She would have been 98 today, and as much as I enjoy a good party, I never did get to meet her.”

Pet Birth Defect Awareness Day

“My next idea was that we could have a PSA about Pet Birth Defect Awareness Day, but that could be a bit of a downer.”

“I don’t know Stinky. That sounds pretty important. Your mom and dad have no idea what causes your seizures, but since they started when you were just a kitten, it could be because of a birth defect. Don’t you think pet parents should know about those things?” asks Periwinkle.

“That’s true. So how about we give our readers the link to a website where they can find more information?”

“I can get behind that.”

“Okay, here it is: Pet Birth Defect Awareness Day,”replies Stinky.

All About Chocolate

Periwinkle & Stinky Cover of the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl.“Finally I settled on a combination of Roald Dahl Day, Milton S. Hershey’s birthday and International Chocolate Day. They are all related, as Hershey is a huge manufacturer of chocolate and Dahl wrote the children’s book, Charlie in the Chocolate Factory.”

“But Stinky, chocolate is poisonous to cats,” says Periwinkle.

Stinky giggles and replies, “That’s where it comes in handy to be cartoon cats. After all, if we were real cats, we wouldn’t have been able to have most of our adventures.”

“I guess that’s true, but I think we should share the website for the Pet Poison Hot Line. And now, what is your actual plan for today?” asks Periwinkle.

“Along with the holidays I already mentioned, it’s also National Kids Take Over the Kitchen Day, so I thought we could do just that and share some yummy recipes made with chocolate.”

“Well I do enjoy a good snack,” replies Periwinkle. I think chocolate covered Temptations would be tasty, and I know by brofur, Raz, would like that.

Fudge

Periwinkle & Stinky: Cartoon tabby cats in aprons and chef hats at counter with bowl, spoons, chocolate chips and recipe book.

“I think we can do a bit better than that. My dad is a big fan of fudge, so I thought we’d share the easy fudge recipe my mom uses.”

Ghirardelli Dark Chocolate Fudge

Dark chocolate, walnut fudge squares.

2 1/4 to 3 cups Ghirardelli semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 1/2 tsp vanilla
14 oz condensed milk, sweetened
1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)

“My mom melts her chocolate chips in the microwave, taking them out frequently to stir, so they don’t dry out or burn. When  melted she stirs in the other ingredients (except nuts). When it is all mixed, she adds the nuts and pours it into a square dish treated with cooking spray. (Butter, margarine or Crisco can be used to prepare dish.) Then it goes in the fridge for a couple hours to set so it can be cut in squares (approximately five dozen pieces) and stored in an airtight container.”

“That does sound yummy, Stinky,” Periwinkle says as she licks her lips. I just hope Mr. Hershey’s fans won’t be upset we didn’t use his chocolate in our recipe.”

“Periwinkle, his chocolate chips do work just as well.”

Agustus Gloop Fudge

“As we are celebrating Roald Dahl’s birthday, I also want to share a second fudge recipe. It is from his book, Charlie in the Chocolate Factory. It is a bit more complicated, and as it requires the stove, all our kitty friends should ask for help from one of their humans when making it.”

chocolate fudge squares with white topping

4 ½ cups sugar
1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk
½ cup butter
2 12-oz packages chocolate chips
7 oz marshmallow creme
4 1.5 oz Hershey bars

Boil sugar, milk, and butter for 10 minutes, stirring constantly. In a separate bowl, mix together chocolate chips, marshmallow creme and chocolate bars. Pour milk mixture over chocolate mixture and stir until melted and combined. Pour into 9×13 pan. Store in fridge once cooled.

“So, what’s next, Stinky?”

“Well, Periwinkle, you know our friend Teddy loves bacon, and there are lots of good bacon and chocolate recipes. Let’s invite him over to share one.“

“Excellent idea, Stinky!”

Teddy Joins Periwinkle & Stinky

“Hi, Periwinkle & Stinky. Thanks for inviting me to join you. I’ve got a great recipe I shared on by blog (Two Spoiled Cats) on June 5, 2021. It’s another sweet treat.”

Bacon-Pecan Chocolate Truffles

Bacon-Pecan Chocolate Truffles

INGREDIENTS:
1 package (12 ounces) dark chocolate chips
6 tablespoons butter, cubed
1/3 cup heavy whipping cream
8 bacon strips, cooked and finely chopped
COATING:
1 cup white baking chips
1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
1/2 teaspoon maple flavoring
1-3/4 cups chopped pecans, toasted
DIRECTIONS:

Place dark chocolate chips in a small bowl. In a small saucepan, heat butter and cream just to simmering. Pour over chocolate; stir until smooth. Stir in bacon. Cool to room temperature, stirring occasionally. Refrigerate, covered, 1-1/2 hours or until firm enough to shape.

For coating, place baking chips in a small bowl. In a small saucepan, bring cream just to a boil. Pour over baking chips; stir with a whisk until smooth. Stir in maple flavoring. Cool completely, stirring occasionally, about 1-1/2 hours.
Shape dark chocolate mixture into 1-in. balls. Dip truffles in maple mixture; allow excess to drip off. Roll in pecans; place on a waxed paper-lined 15x10x1-in. baking pan. Refrigerate until set. Store between layers of waxed paper in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

“Wow, Teddy, that’s a real winner. Thank you,” say Periwinkle and Stinky in unison as they clap heir paws.

“You’re welcome. I always enjoy joining my friends in the kitchen.” The three tabbies hug each other and Teddy returns to the tunnel for his trip home.

Everything S’Mores

“I know Cooper Murphy shared some really nommy s’mores at Cat Scout’s recently. Let’s share that recipe too. I think everybody knows how to make s’mores, so we can just share a photo and list of ingredients,” Stinky tells Periwinkle.

S'mores with marshmallow, banana, strawberries, peanut butter, chocolate squares, graham crackers and chocolate chip cookies

3  toasted marshmallows
2 graham crackers
2 chocolate wafer cookies
1 sliced strawberry
creamy peanut butter
sliced bananas
2 chocolate chip cookies
2 dark chocolate squares (Ghiardelli or Hershey’s are best)

“Stinky, I am not certain I could get my mouth around one of those, but it sure does look scrumptious. All this has been a lot of work. I think we should take a break and have some kitty approved treats. What do you think?”

“I am definitely ready for that, Periwinkle. Let’s go to the front porch so we can have some alone time.”

Cartoon tabbies, Periwinkle and Stinky, on front porch with cat treats.

“Stinky, I love your front porch. It is so comfy. And I always enjoy our alone time.”

Stinky leans over and gives Periwinkle a whisker kiss. “That’s my favorite time of all, Periwinkle.”

“Do you think our friends will enjoy today’s adventure?” Periwinkle asks Stinky.

“If they like chocolate and decide to make one or more of these treats for themselves and their families, I think they will,” Stinky tells her.

The two tabbies spend the remainder of the afternoon talking, laughing and holding paws until it is time for Periwinkle to head home. After saying her good-byes to all Stinky’s fursibs and his parents, Periwinkle enters the teleportation tunnel. She and Stinky blow each other a final kiss, and she is gone in a whoosh.

The End

A RELUCTANT SELFIE PARTICIPANT

Sunday Selfies: Week #421

One would think with nine Kitties Blue it would be no trouble getting one of them to take a selfie. After all, if they took turns, each would only need to take a selfie five or six times each year. Of course, reasoning with even one cat is impossible. All this preamble is to say that none of the gang came running when it was selfie-taking time.

I was able to get a half-awake Sawyer to finally snap a selfie to share with you.

reluctant selfie participant is a grey tabby cat in an elaborate silver filagree frame.

Sawyer did convince me to jazz up his selfie with a fancy frame for his sweet girlfriend Noelle. He sends her love and kisses.

Hopping Time

Though Sawyer was reluctant to take and share his selfie, he invites all of you to join him on our blog hop. It’s for all anipals regardless of species. And you can join anytime through Thursday. This really is a fun place to show off just how adorable you are and to make some new friends.

All of us here at The Cat on My Head appreciate your support and friendship. This community is so full of love and caring individuals, and we are blessed to be members.

Remembering

Before we close today, I am sending all my prayers to those who were in any way effected by the tragedy of 9/11. I remember that day as if it was yesterday; though, it has now been 21 years since that very sad event when so many lives were lost and families shattered. May this never occur again.

GINGER KITTEN TURNS PURPLE

Caturday Art

Kizmet and the kittens have all decided that my walker is a fun place to play. Raleigh kindly posed for a photo while relaxing on the seat.

Art rendering of a ginger kitten sitting on a human's walker turned purple for art in a purple frame.

I used the Kaleido160 effect from Painnt, the Spiral Light filter from piZap at about 50 percent and a frame from the favpng app to create Raleigh’s art.

Raleigh will be popping over to Athena Cat Goddess Wise Kitty’s blog for her Caturday Art hop. If you’d like to join him there and/or find links to the art of your fellow bloggers, click on Athena’s badge.

I did make a puzzle for all our jigsaw fans.

Sunday Selfies Reminder

Can you believe another week has slid right by us. I can’t, but it has, which means it is time for you to snap a selfie and then take your Sunday off to enjoy a well-deserved “easy” with your humans. And if you cannot join us tomorrow, it’s okay. Our hop remains open through Thursday.  But you know all the Kitties Blue will be looking for you tomorrow.

As usual, I have no idea which of the rascals will step forward to be your host. So, that’s another reason you need to stop by.

Thanks for checking out our art today.

ONE BOX + TWO KITTENS & FILL-INS

Feline/Friendship Friday

Boxes are always good for a fun time even when one is just a kitten.

Raleigh and Audrey will be participating in the Feline Friday (Comedy Plus) and Friendship Friday (Create With Joy) blog hops.

Friendly Fill-Ins

I am so lucky that once again both Sawyer and Stinky stepped up to assist with fill-ins. As usual, we all used teal italics for our fill-ins, and explanatory information is in parentheses.

1. A pleasant memory that I have from grade school is trick-or-treating all over the neighborhood after dark without having to have parental supervision or worrying about some bad person putting something harmful in our bag.
2. My plans this month include installing and learning how to use Google Analytics 4.
3. Sawyer: Please don’t ask me to choose between Noelle and treats.
4. Stinky: In two years, I see myself married to Periwinkle if she’ll have me. (I can be quite a pawful!)

Sawyer, Stinky and I are joining the Friendly Fill-ins blog hop hosted by Ellen (15 And Meowing) and Lorianne (Four-Legged- Furballs). To do the same, check out either of their blogs on Thursday for the sentences to be filled in. You can join the hop by clicking on their badge.

We’ll be back tomorrow with some Caturday Art.

LITTLE HOUSE IN THE WOODS BY PERIWINKLE & STINKY

Thoroughly Poetic Thursday

Thursday is one of my favorite days of the week, as writing poetry is what I enjoy most. And the inspiration photos provided by Angel Sammy and Teddy (Two Spoiled Cats) always provide a nice challenge. I have been trying to add one or more of the Kitties Blue to the photos recently, so my poems are in keeping with the theme of this blog.

This week our intrepid adventurers, Stinky and Periwinkle, have found themselves in the photo and have actually written the poem today in the form of a conversation. Their initials precede their individual parts of the conversation.

LITTLE HOUSE IN THE WOODS BY PERIWINKLE & STINKY: cartoon tabby cats standing next to a house in the shape of a shoe

The Little House in the Woods

S: Periwinkle, look at this cute little house.
It looks just big enough for a mouse.
P: Or maybe a place for you and me
To hide away among these trees.
We should peak in the windows and check
To see if it’s nice or a terrible wreck.
S: I’m not sure that’s a good plan.
It could be home to the bogeyman.
P: Don’t be silly, I’m sure it’s okay.
After all, have I ever lead you astray?
But, if you insist, we could ring the bell
And ask if they might be willing to sell
To two adorable tabby kitties,
Who would always keep it neat and pretty.
S: I guess that would be okay;
Though, I haven’t brought any money today.
P: Well, it seems as if there is no one here.
Do you think we could wait until they appear?
S: How about we come back another day,
And I will bring along some money to pay
In case we can convince the owner to sell
To tabby cats who want to live happy and well.

Thankful Thursday

Today is also when we share our thankfuls for the week. I am delighted to report that all the Kitties Blue are well. Sawyer has not had a seizure in 15 days, and Audrey and Raleigh are thriving. Misty May is holding her own and looking forward to her 18th birthday in ten days.

I am getting around a bit better, my pain level has dropped some, and I have an appointment with the P.A. in my orthopedist’s office tomorrow.

Finally, Dad Tom and I are thankful we have continued to avoid getting COVID. Being retired definitely has its advantages.

We’d like to thank Brian for hosting Thankful Thursday. It is a blog hop. You can participate by entering the URL from the badge below in your browser.
