THE ADVENTURES OF PERIWINKLE & STINKY: PART XLIV

Imagining

Stinky sits quietly, on orders from his mom, awaiting Periwinkle’s arrival. After morning zoomies the previous day, he had a pretty exhausting seizure. Stinky had to promise his parents another quiet adventure. Stinky is frankly getting pretty tired of the tameness of his and Periwinkle’s times together.

As he sits pouting, Periwinkle emerges with the usual whoosh from the tunnel. She takes one look at Stinky and knows he is not a happy camper. Putting her arms around him, Periwinkle gives Stinky a big hug and some whisker kisses and asks, “Hey, aren’t you happy to see me?”

Stinky hugs her back and whispers, “Yes, of course. I’m just mad at my mom.”

“We’re you naughty? Did you get in trouble?”

“No,” replies Stinky. He continues, “First off, I am angry as she furminated me and stole about half my fur yesterday while I was in a stupor after a seizure. Then she said we had to have another quiet adventure today.”

“Well, you look mighty handsome, so I don’t think you should fret about that fur theft,” Periwinkle tells him.

That makes Stinky smile and blush just a little.

Periwinkle adds, “And you know I don’t care what we do as long as we are together.”

“Well that’s good, as we are going to have to use our imaginations for today’s adventure. I think we have to use something called a mind meld. I heard about it on TV.”

“We don’t have to cut our heads open, do me?” Periwinkle asks with a shaky voice.

“Ewww, no, that would be gross. I think we just hold each other’s paws and look deeply into each other’s eyes and imagine what we want to do.”

“Well, that sounds pretty easy and definitely not strenuous. Do you know what you want to do, Stinky.”

“Yes, I think so. What about you?”

“Let me think about it for a few minutes,” replies Periwinkle as she scrunches up her eyes and forehead. Suddenly, she opens her eyes and shouts, “I have it, but can we really do anything we want, like travel back in time?”

“Yes, of course! We are using our imaginations, so we can do anything,” says Stinky.

“Well, you know how much I love lizards, so I want to go way, way back in time and meet a really huge reptile and ride one.”

“Yikes, that sounds a little scary. Do you mean a dinosaur? I know Cooper Murphy did that once. Mom even showed me a photo!”

“Can I see it?”

“I’ll ask Mom to get it.”

“That’s exactly what I want to do. What do you want to do, Stinky?”

Magic Carpet Ride

“Cooper Murphy told me about how his girlfriend, Tyebe, and her sis, Shoko, have a magic carpet. I want to ride on one of those.”

“That sounds like fun, Stinky. Let’s do that first. We can take the carpet to my adventure.”

“Okay, take my paws, Periwinkle, and then close your eyes tight. We both have to concentrate super hard so we can find ourselves on that carpet.”

Periwinkle does as Stinky asks and in the slow blink of a cat’s eye the two tabbies find themselves floating through the sky on their carpet.

“Oh Stinky, this is so beautiful. I love the feeling of floating. We imagined this purrfectly, don’t you think?”

“This is truly magical, Periwinkle. I hope we can imagine it again sometime. Shall we head off to your adventure using our carpet for transportation?”

“Yes, please,” replies Periwinkle.

The tabbies continue to imagine themselves flying through the air on their magic carpet. It is so enjoyable and fun, they take their time before resetting their imaginations for Periwinkle’s adventure.

Dinosaur Wrangling

Soon Periwinkle and Stinky find themselves atop a humongous dinosaur. Periwinkle opens her eyes and is surprised to see how high off the ground they are and says to Stinky, “I am happy we are imagining this. I think I would be frightened otherwise.”

“Me too, Periwinkle. Since you are the reptile expert, do you know what type of dinosaur this is?”

“No, I am going to imagine we have a dinosaur field guide. Hmm, this looks like a Centrosaurus apertus. The guide says it was a horned dinosaur that lived in what is now Alberta, Canada, 76 to 77 million years ago. Stinky this is super cool: It also says that Centrosaurus means pointed lizard. We’re riding on a lizard that is 18ft long and 6ft tall and weighs 6000 pounds. We better stay right where we are, so we don’t get squished! Lucky for us they are herbivores so we don’t have to worry about being eaten.”

“Since we are imagining our visit, I don’t think we have to worry about that, Periwinkle,” says Stinky.

“Oh, yeah. This seems so real, I forgot.”

“Periwinkle, I am starting to get hungry. Are you ready to head home?”

“Yes, I could use a snack myself. How do we get home?”

“Just open your eyes, Periwinkle.”

“Wow, we are on your catio, Stinky. That was so cool. We can go anywhere and do anything we want, just by using our imaginations.”

After snacks and a visit with Stinky’s parents and fursibs, the tabbies share whispers and whisker kisses. With the usual tears, Periwinkle and Stinky say, “good-bye,” and Periwinkle is gone in a whoosh.
