Thoroughly Poetic Thursday

We were dreading having to write a poem this week, as the prompt letter is “Q.” We pooled our thoughts for a subject: Quacker Oats, quarks, quacks, quizzes, quinoa… But as you can see, our ideas were pretty lame. So we decided to let the petretary take this one. That way, if the poem is crummy, it’s all on her. Before she shows you her poem, we told her she needed to post a definition of her $10 “Q” word (which we’d never heard before).

Quintessential: definition—representing the most perfect or typical example of a quality or class; synonyms—typical, prototypical, stereotypical, archetypal, classic, model, standard, stock, representative, conventional; ideal, consummate, exemplary, definitive, best, ultimate.

The Quintessential Cat

Quintessential is a very strange word.
Some say cats are strange, but that’s absurd.
They, however, do have some unusual leanings,
Representing a variety of Quintessential’s meanings.
Lily Olivia is a conventional calico with lots of catitude.
Cooper Murphy’s the best at snorphelling his food.
Giulietta’s a classic beauty with her luxurious furs,
While tortie Astrid has the ultimate rumbling purr.
Mauricio is a consummate complainer for no reason,
And Misty May is a standard bully no matter the season.
Lisbeth is the model pod potato, sleeping all day.
C.J. is the ideal snuggler and can’t be coaxed away.
To make the Quintessential cat it took all eight Kitties Blue.
Nonetheless…all cats are cool and all cats rule!

The Quintessential Cat

Well, my harshest critics may be right. This is not my best submission in Angel Sammy and Teddy’s Thoroughly Poetic Thursday event. I could not come up with a good ending for this poem, and I finally just punted. Many years ago in a poetry seminar I attended at Redford University, the poet/professor leading the seminar told us that most poems are never really finished but rather abandoned. That’s what I feel I did with this one. So, let’s move on.
