Thoroughly Poetic Thursday
As we do each Thursday, we are joining Teddy and Angel Sammy’s Thoroughly Poetic Thursday. Mom Pam posted a really cool photo last week for inspiration. I had been looking forward to writing that poem, but that was not to be. I have written a poem to and for Lily Olivia.
One of a Kind
I don’t know how to say good-bye.
I thought you were invincible; though,
You used up many of your nine lives.
You ruled us all with an iron paw;
Never took “no” for an answer
And always got your way.
If not, you’d bark to signal your
Displeasure and sometimes raise a paw.
I always joked that you were bi-polar.
When I told people you were a calico
They immediately understood what I meant.
Today was unnaturally quiet in the house.
Can a home seem empty with eight cats?
I will miss waking up at night to find you
Sitting next to me and staring at me.
I will miss you yelling at us as you did
When you wanted breakfast and dinner.
I will miss watching you lounging and snoozing
On the porch settee on a warm afternoon.
But most of all I will miss your kisses!
When kitten Sawyer befriended you,
We suspect you were imparting your
Wisdom and secrets for controlling us.
Time will tell if he was a good listener.
But whatever he may have learned,
Neither Sawyer nor any other cat
Can or will replace you in our hearts.
Lily Olivia, you were one-of-a-kind.

Thankful Thursday
It is beyond difficult to be thankful today. Losing Lily Olivia is not a good start to the new year. I am, however, thankful to have had her in our lives for nearly nineteen years. And I am grateful to everyone who has left comments on our “Saying Good-bye” post as well as on the Cat Scouts and Crotchety Cougars websites and Tom’s Facebook page and sent e-mail messages and texts of condolences. Thank you. I will do my best to thank each of you personally during the next few weeks.
As a tribute to Lily Olivia, I am sharing a few photos from the afternoon of New Year’s Day. These are the last photos taken of her. I apologize for the quality. Lily was enjoying her last sunpuddle, and Sawyer was soaking in all those secrets she was sharing.
Thankful Thursday is a blog hop hosted by our friend, Brian. To share your “thankfuls,” click on his badge.

Janet, this poem is beautiful. What a heartfelt tribute to Lily-Olivia. She sounds like she and Delilah were a lot alike. Deli barks and yells at us too 🙂 I’m sorry for the pain and loss. Please know that we are thinking of and praying for you and Tom and family. Sending lots of love. Sampy sends all of his love to Astrid too, and a kiss for every snowflake that has fallen so far this year.
Followed you on WordPress. I promise no hissing or spitting can’t promise the same about scratching. LOL, MOL
WOW. Just … WOW. That’s an incredible poem and tribute to Lily Olivia. The hardest part is the silence and emptiness we find at the times and places we’re used to seeing our Rainbow Bridge fur-baby. Each one is so full of personality – so unique – so beautiful. It’s not fair that we can’t have them for a lifetime. But it’s also true that we kind of do – our love for them and theirs for us – transforms us and stays with us forever. We’re better cat Moms … more loving … and in that way, their lives never truly end – even when the feeling of a hole in our lives is unbearable.
That is a beautiful poem, and the photos of Lily Olivia enjoying those sunpuddles and imparting her wisdom to Sawyer are wonderful. Hugs to you.
Those are lovely shots of Lilly Olivia and Sawyer. It is so poignant.
What a lovely poem, I have wet eyes.
I send you love and strength.
Love Barb
Oh what a lovely poem. It is really good that Sawyer absorbed all those impawtant lessons before Lily Olivia had to go on her last journey. She looks all soft and warm in her sunpuddle, and how nice that she made a furiend of the New Kid. Somewhere she is gently purring her thanks for the wonderful life she had with you. XOXOXOX
That is a beautiful tribute poem to your Lily Olivia. It’s sweet that you have photos of her and Sawyer together during her last days. I’m sure she was imparting some of her kitty wisdom to him
That was a beautiful poem for a beautiful girl. I love these photos too, Sawyer is a special boy. XO
Oh, Janet, how my heart aches for you and Tom. Words cannot express. Sawyer looks so sweet with Lily Olivia. It’s like he knew and wanted to be with her as she crossed. Prayers and hugs.
That poem was so beautiful and so loving. You are so right though, having that sweetie for 19 years is really something to be thankful for, even though losing her hurts so much. Love and hugs from all of us and thanks for joining the Thankful Thursday Blog Hop, I know it was tough.
This is a lovely poem for Lily Olivia. The photos with Sawyer are so touching. He knew her time was coming and I am sure he wanted to share as much as possible while she was still there. Love and hugs to you.
Memories of Eric and Flynn.
What a beautiful poem in honor of your special girl. Once again, we are so sorry that she flew off to the bridge, but she will never be truly gone…she will always live on in your heart. Purrs……
I’m so sorry for your lost. Lily Olivia was one of a kind. Prayers of love for you all.
Lily Olivia had a huge presence for such a little girl.
If only love were enough to keep them with us…
xxoo
Leaky eyes. Your beautiful poem and photographs show a love that will always be shining. Just like the light in Lily Olivia’s eyes when she looked at you.
Sending hugs and purrs
Mom Janet we are all so very sad for you and we know how quiet it gets when a beloved joins the Rainbow Bridge. Our hearts are breaking and we will all miss that beautiful calico face of Miss Lily Olivia. Purring deeply for you all.
A beautiful poem for a beautiful ladycat. We love the photos of Sawyer and Lily Olivia. We KNOW she was telling him her secrets to ruling the house.
Love,
The Florida Furkids and Mom Sharon with special love and smoochies to Mau from Allie.
You write the most beautiful poetry for your angels, Janet. This one is no exception. What a wonderful tribute to your stunning and indeed one-of-a-kind Lily Olivia. She will be with you forever. All of our purrs, woofs, prayers, thoughts, and hugs to you.
Thank you mom and dad for everything; thank you mom for my poem
I love it and
I love you both too; and always will ~~~~~~ ♥♥♥♥♥ Lily Olivia
Another beautiful poem Janet. I agree with the other commenter who said you should put this poem in your sidebar. I heard about your loss yesterday and I’m still sad about it for you and your household. I can’t even imagine what it must be like for you. Lily Olivia will never be forgotten.
Glad you have the two new youngsters in your life to make your heart smile — even if it’s only a little bit. {{{{{big bear hugs}}}}}
What a lovely poem, and those photos of young Sawyer and Lily Olivia are too precious for words. Sending you thoughts & prayers of comfort and healing.
Our hearts are broken too that Lily Olivia has received her wings but what a mark she made on the Blue household in her long life…..each cat is so very unique – they have such distinct personalities and once we “get” that and “get” them, we realize the one thing they have in common is the ability to get into our hearts FOREVER. Lily Olivia is certainly permanently “there”. We know how hard it is adjusting to not having her there but it’s just so heart-warming seeing little Sawyer who obviously just KNEW the Queen of the household was about to say farewell…….and she has. We send you hugs and absolutely LOVE your poem – I hope you add this to your sidebar.
Love, Pam and Teddy too
Oh what lovely pictures, and fine words in deed, and worthy of one so brave and bold and so loving and alive. A home without a life, even just one of the many, is not whole for that life had space. I hopes that Sawyer will live up to lily Olivia’s teachings.
Purrs ERin
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. My prayers are with you. It is just heartbreaking to lose a furry family member. You have taken some beautiful pictures. Sending virtual hugs…
What a sweet and beautiful poem for Lily Olivia ! Purrs and hugs
Interestingly, I just came from the Friends Furever blog, where I found out that this tree was a memorial for someone. And it – and your poem – both fit in perfectly. I can imagine how quiet your home must be. My human’s soul cat was a calico, like Lily Olivia, and they are very special cats to begin with, and exceptional beings to the humans they live with. My human thinks about her cat, Harlot, every day, even though she’s been gone for 16 years (longer now than she was was alive), and I know Lily Olivia will always have a special place in your heart.
What a beautiful poem and sweet pics. She wuz a one of a kind kitty.
What a sweet poem and so eloquent!
Sending big hugs and lots of love and purrs.
