Sparks: Week #10
We had our first snow of the season on Saturday. The first snow is always magical and somehow cleansing. Watching it fall can be mesmerizing, calming and restorative. I don’t know that these cattle feel the same way, but they made a good background for today’s “Spark.” The photo of these longhorns was taken by Dad Tom on Saturday. He was on Route 11 in Virginia near Steele’s Tavern.
He’s photographed these bovines previously, and one starred as our Sunday Selfie guest host on post #111, “Inappropriate Tongue Use in Selfie.”
The author of today’s quote, Susan Orlean, is an American journalist and author. She has been a staff writer for The New Yorker since 1992. She also has contributed articles to many magazines, including Vogue, Rolling Stone, Esquire, and Outside. Orlean is best known as the author of the 1998 book The Orchid Thief. It was adapted into the film Adaptation (2002), starring Meryl Streep.
Sparks is a weekly blog hop established and hosted by Annie at McGuffy’s Reader. In establishing the hop, she wrote this, “I believe we are meant to be lights in this world. If we allow our light to shine, we can see where we are going. It is then that we can begin to truly see each other clearly. Together, we can light up the entire world!”

I completely agree with the fact that the first snow is always magical and somehow cleansing.
Falling snow is beautiful. I like seeing it wrapped in an afghan sitting on the sofa.
Those bovine(s) sure look desolate and cold, Brrr!
Petcretary likes watching snow falling too, the kind with big fluffy flakes…but hates to have to drive in it…like tonight. We are in the midst of a wintry mess:(
Another great picture by Dad Tom … and another great quote you found!
Great Quote and a beautiful picture have been combined into a beautiful Spark!
Thank You
Barb
This is beautiful. I love the image. I took some pictures of Longhorns in Texas, when I traveled with Bill. True quote, too. It is magical to watch the snow. Hugs.
Great addition to the spirit of things! Be well.
remind my husband of that when he is outside at 5:30 am cleaning off the car to go and substitute teach because I have my car in the garage and I don’t have to go anywhere. Yes, I AM awful hehehe
Lovely spark and photo today! Snow already? We’re not ready for winter but guess the sooner it comes, the sooner spring and open windows come too. It’s sunny but really, really cold here.
That is a great spark and beautiful photo. I love the first snow too, we got 6 inches this past weekend and everything looks beautiful and Christmassy. XO
Oh, I loved “The Orchid Thief” The film, “Adaptation”, was interesting, but of course it didn’t follow the book. But anything with Meryl Streep in it is aces with me!

I always look forward to your Sparks and the beautiful photographs that go with them. There really is something so beautifully magical about snow. Have a magnificent Monday!
The quote is very inspirational and instructional.
That is a terrific and timely Spark!
Wow, we didn’t know there were longhorns like that near where you live. We thought they were all in Texas! 😀 That’s a great quote….a nice way of looking at snow.
Love the Spark today…..I was thinking as our snow was falling that it’s one thing I have never in all my 70 years ever gotten tired of – watching snow fall. Somehow it still seems magical even though I “get” what it is….it’s just soft and covers even the ugliest of things with a coating of “fresh”…..it reminds me that every single day is a NEW START. Still, I’m glad every single day doesn’t need snow falling to make me feel that way!
Hugs, Pam
